I am just looking for a little assistance. I am looking at LandRovers and I am wondering what to get. I have up to 40k to spend and am wondering if a new disco is the way to go or should I get a used one or even a new Freelander. I am just looking for the best deal. It's primary used will be back and forth to work. I still would like to do some lite to moderate trails. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

IF i were you, i'd get a used 99 disco. they should go for about 20K or so. then with the rest of the money, you slowly build it up.
and if you build it up wisely you will end up with a real road friendly offroader.

OR, you can also consider a 98 range rover HSE 4.6 for less than 40K. and there you dont' have to do much. that thing kicks ass as is even with low profile tires.

as you can see, used car prices are real low.
go to http://www.kbb.com check the used car pricing.

Ho, a 99 DSI or DSII?
I say DSII, and then follow above instructions. Very capable vehicle and very confortable to travel in. Best of both worlds if you ask me. You may not think you'll off-road much, but once you see where they will go stock, you start thinking "Hmmm. If it went there stock, just think of where I could go if I added (insert aftermarket part here)." It is TRULY an addictive hobby, but one you will enjoy imensely.

greg, disco2 is also a great vehicle.

well, i am not so sure about that statement. lately i've seen enough breakage of "modified" trucks that i wouldn't dare make such statement. :)

Anon,

I guess it all depends on how you want to spend your money. Helpful thought, eh? Really though, are you concerned about fuel economy? How far is your commute? Is the issue up-front cost or operating costs? Do you do your own maintenance or pay someone else to do it? When you say, "I am just looking for the best deal", that's a statement wide open to interpretation. I think in order to get more germane advice you'd have to hone down your needs/wants/desires a bit more and ask again. Good luck, Rovers are the most fun!

Karen :)

Since I have a DII now........

If I had 40k to blow, I would buy a D90.

D90

id go with ho on the range rover thing.. everybody kills on the current gen range rovers, but they are becoming relativly affordable, and they can do ALOT!! I drive boths discos and rangies every day as i work for LR, but i also own both a 4.0 SE and a disco. the disco gets dirty and scratched and the 4.0 stays nice, but just think, that 4.0 can do more than the disco with less mods, and it is easily one of the most comfortable highway cruisers out there. its only a matter of time before a set of 255/85 find there way under my 4.0 SE and the Disco moves on to a new owner... the range is just a better vehcile.. period. oh..and 40k for a 98 hse?? YIKES!! in my corner of the world you can get a low mile 98 hse for sub $34k... commence flaming

and gil, you joking about the 255/85 under the rangie... right? :) then you be breaking shit just the same. LOL

Thanks for the info, you have just made it even harder for me now :), You just added a whole new avenue for me to go down. I never checked into a RR. I travel about 40 mile RT for work, what does the RR get for mileage. But thanks again for the help

damn Ho.. i got a black on black 2000 HSE with 30k on the clock for $39,900!! i guess i should raise my prices to california levels.. unfortunatly its no joke.. as soon as i find a new home for the impeccably maintained 97 5-speed Disco (anyone?).. its onto project 96 4.0 se. we are still trying to figure out the logistics of rebuilding the suspension using currently available coils. ill let u know how it works out..:)

gil, the beauty about the HSE is the whole enchilada the way it is.
dont' change a thing. just keep as is. that's the way you piss off more people on the trail. :)

I have found a 2000 HSE for 33k, it has 25k miles so would this be a good deal?

ahhh... the art of the good deal.. well in theory that is a good deal. alas, if it is a "buyback"..its no longer a good deal.. if it is a flood car, its no longer a good deal.. if its been hit and rebuilt..you guessed it.. no longer a good deal. it all depends, and you need to know what to look for. agreed Ho.. a bone stock HSE runnin trails on low-profile 18s would piss off alot of people, but for a second just imagine a rangie running around 5" taller than "standard ride height" wearing nato steels and 32" MTs.. and then imagine what that beast would be capable of..

I agree with Ho. I wheeled with a guy a BB's OTR Moab last year who was running a bone stock 4.6 HSE. He did Gold Bar Rim and Lower Hidalgo in Moab along with some other gnarly trails. He has some great driving skills, but you shoulda seen this rig. It looks like it has never seen dirt.

Ho...again...what did you do? :)
