Anyone ever ship a roof rack? I've found one but I cannot find a place that will ship and insure. Does the rack need to be wrapped? Costs?
Thanks in advance.

Mine, Brownchurch full length, was shipped UPS ground without any wrapping. Arrived in fine shape.

Shipped from Brownchurch or another supplier or did you buy it from someone used?

Jack,
Purchased it from RN, new, and had it shipped. UPS came and plopped it down on the front door.
Not sure if the timing matters or not; it was 5 years ago.

I used forward air to move a rack from CA to MD. We had to have a crate bilt for about $100. Forward Air can put you in touch with a crate maker.

I've seen many people say to use Greyhound but I've never heard of anyone who actually used them Anyone out there?

Yea I use greyhound to ship small things like running boards but not sure if they can do a rack.

You can wrap and tape all the edges with heavy card board and attach a packing slipp envelope. Plenty of carriers will ship it. expect to pay 100 to 150 normal ground rates...

Gray-Hound will do bumpers but the racks are too bulky all fright is loaded by hand.

I tried doing what Dee sugested with Forwardair.com but they would not insure it. In a container, the insurance was still too expensive. Pack it very well. A friend of mine in the shipping business once told me to look at a fork lift as a six thousand pound spear on wheels.

When I took possession of the D2 Adventure Rack, it was sent in a big cardboard box from LRNA via FedEx. Details on the airbill stated that shipping was right around US$100.

Considering that LRNA has a corporate discount, you should plan on spending at least twice that amount.

You can try:
AAA
Yellow Freight

Just about any carrier should transport it for you. I would wrap it or better yet see if you can find a pallet and band it to it. The larger carrier companies will probably charge around $100 but they transport heavy and bulky cargo. You won't have to take that chance with the smaller carriers transferring from truck to truck by hand not really caring.

Just my two cents.

FWIW shipping it will considerably less if shiped to a comercial address, also if you require UPS or Fedex to Pickup that will cost you. for large items drop off and choose ground 5 day schedule. Stay away from places like MailBoxes ect there working on a 50 to 75 % markup

Neil is correct none will insure if not in a fully sealed and padded container. If you wrap realy tight and double all the edges it will survive
