ok I think it's only fair that if I post on the POR board then I better ask over here also.

simple - 5" of lift running stock drive shafts -

yes I know the most obvious answers, I'm just looking to see if anyone has actually put any miles on before they switched.

There now I feel much better that I've asked a (somewhat) serious question.

The front is hosed I am fairly certain. The rear will live though I think if you get the pinion angle setup right...

ya know the front doesn't look as bad as the rear but this may be an illusion. I'm going to try and get a dink (digital angleometer) and get a fairly accurate measurement.

then I'll go get some cardon(ed) shafts. LOL

>5" of lift running stock drive shafts

if the shafts live let us know how

hate to see one or both give up the fight at speed....

I am going to leave em on for awhile just to see how they do.

I don't think my litte 3.9 is going to over power the UJ's and that's the only way I know of causing a catastrophic failure.

I suppose that if I totally ignored the intensive driveline shakes when the UJ's were falling apart that eventually one might fall off. That would be interesting. LOL

who was it (with a DII I think) that blew a U on the front dshaft at speed and knocked a hole clean through the tcase or trans? Was it Han or Brian over on EE? That was fuckin ugly....

Ron A
Posted on Friday, June 14, 2002 - 07:46 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

I can't imagine it was Han...

Now if it was Brian then I can tell you exactly what the problem was (haa haa).

Brian still owes me a bunch of beer for using my last AAAplus tow. He broke real good.

Blue, actually I have seen drivelines drop but I've never seen one go that didn't give lots of tell-tale signs that it needed a little attention.

The only ones I've seen that went ka-boom were in cars that were trying to do wheel stands.

I've done 4.5" of lift before the vibes started. Only did about 10 miles that way and took the spacers off.

3" or more wont last long without drastic
changes to everything else that moves!
Do your homework!
then ask a relevant Q!

Or pull the pin & GO!

If it breaks, it was bad to start with!

Rover & broke.

Well heres the kind of intelligent answer I was waiting for. An anonymous poster that has solved all the drivetrain problems in one fell swoop.

First of all 3 of suspension lift with stock driveline is acceptable. I drove nearly 40K miles with this configuration before I developed a vibration in the driveline. As it turned out the u-joints were fine but the driveline was bent after taking a hard hit on a rock.

>or pull the pin & GO!

What the hell does that mean?

As soon as you actually buy a Rover and start using it, then maybe you can come back with some intelligent input.

In the mean time quit guessing.

Damn Ron , I am proud , spoken like a true smart ass.... :) I have also driven around 50-60K with atleast 3" and everything stock (Including the shocks) aside from the front Drive shaft (Double cardan) ........

Apparently Ive been reading to many of your posts I should probably get in the lotus position and reread some of Hos old post to calm myself uuhhmmmmmmmmm

Data point:
3 lift 40K+
5 lift <300

started to get a rattle on deceleration last night. Off come the shafts.

3" rovertyme springs made my shocks top out
if I lifted up on the bumber by hand.
hit a bump & its bang bang, shocks trying to be
torn apart by the dropping axle.
instant front shaft vibe showed up too!
my alignment man said the caster was way out of whack & when turned the wheels may want to keep turning instead of returning to center
( he was right on the $)
my options were to spend more $,
or go for less suspension lift,

F & R links, shocks, & new shaft didnt fit the budget,
so 2" springs, 32" tires & stock stuff
have worked quite well for 10k mi.
I did my homework & it didnt work out
as I had planned (bummer for me)
Yes Ron I do own a 89 RR!
Does the A stand for ASS?

"pull the pin"
is a racing term for
'run it as hard as ya can'
it used to be associated with
race teams using 'qualifying engines'
( see grenade )
to hopefully get a pole position.

how about, drive it like ya stole it?

broke & still got rover!

Still way ahead of you there brokenrover

If you go back and look at my original post youll see the question (of sorts) was specific about a stock driveline with 5 of lift. Of course it was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek jab at Kyle because of his early posts and I know a lot of people dont know his mechanical qualifications.

If you read further youll see I said, yes I know the most obvious answers. This was an attempt to keep people like you from responding with some lame answer that wasnt relative. Apparently it didnt work.

Normally I wouldnt have responded to a post such as yours but considering that you choose to hide behind a handle and not a real name and the tone you set in your post was somewhat less than positive it was obvious a return post was in order. Of course what I was really thinking was fuck you but didnt think that was appropriate at the time. (is now a good time?)

As for doing my homework, well this is my 5th suspension modification to this truck. As an engineer Im very familiar with doing homework on structural/mechanical setups. 3 lift, been there done that long ago. I will give you credit for going back to a milder setup than a 3. I call the 3 a tweener because you end up on the cusp of doing more mods to keep everything working properly and it starts getting expensive with little added effect. (hey hasnt someone on this board been preaching that naw)

Side note: the setup I like is a 2 spring and 2 body w/ 32-32.5 tires, damn could I have saved a lot of money.

But alas Im not smart enough to take my own advice so I decided to go bigger. Heres the current configuration of my 90 RR:

5 suspension lift (3 bearmachs, 2 J-BS risers)
2 body lift
ABR front, Detroit rear w/ 4.75 GBR gears
24 spline HD GBR axels rear, stock RR 10 spline front (still trying to decide between GBR or a 44)
35 GY MT/R on Allied 32 bolt bead locks hey /mp I put the bead locks on last night
Rockware shock mounts rear w/ 14.75 travel Pro Crap er I mean Comp shocks, modified OME shocks on front
And an assortment of armour and goodies from EE and Rovertym (radius, trailing arms, steering shit, etc.)
Oh and about 350 lbs of protective armour I made myself

Anyway that gives you an idea of what Ive tried. If Ive learned anything its that you never have a good answer until youve tried it and fixed it and tried and fixed it a few times. A lot of this equipment is fairly new so the jurys still out on how well it works (although I can tell you its pretty amazing).

As for your racing metaphor, well since my rover tops out at 58 MPH I guess it doesnt really apply does it. (rhetorical, dont answer)

Good luck and hopefully the next time you can add something to the conversation.

from the look before you leap dept.

moments after I posted that I was getting a rattle on deceleration I crawled under the rover to check the driveline. Its perrrrffecccttt.

Turns out that 2 lug nuts on the left rear had not been secured properly (better tighten em next time) and they were causing a little slap on the housing.

So remove data point B stock driveshafts live on

haaa haaa, by perfect I guess I really mean that I'm suprised they haven't broken and poked me in the ass like Blue mentioned.

I hope to get it down to the driveline shop and do some measuring before dusy.

I should be carefull because I've been broke, broken and my RR gives ugly a bad name.

But one thing I won't do is hide behind a handle.

Well good morning broken (or not?) rover. One thing you do is give me a good chuckle every when morning I take a peek at d-web.

Im certainly not the internet police but since you seem to want to continue this here goes:

First of all you really need to read the post and understand it before you reply. Your reply indicates that you are probably young and immature and seldom actually listen before you speak. Your post was almost unintelligible and didnt have any fact basis to add to the thread.

In other word instead of it being bullshit coming from your mouth it was just bullshit you typed.

(shall we review)

>3" or more wont last long without drastic
>changes to everything else that moves!
>Do your homework!
>then ask a relevant Q!

>Or pull the pin & GO!

>If it breaks, it was bad to start with!

>Rover & broke.

Secondly, if youre new to a BB you probably should take some time to look around and get a feel for whos posting and the general feeling for how the threads run. For someone to post anon and make a derogatory statement in their post your going to get the respect your deserve (hell I actually think were being nice to ya).

If for some reason you really feel like you need to be respected on this BB then start by trying to earn it. Add something positive to a post and use a name instead of a handle er I mean pussie. And if you get flamed, for whatever reason, dont start whining about it because it only points out that the flamer was correct.

Lastly, you should really consider where it is youre at. Youre on an internet forum that is available to every monkey that has the capability of making a keystroke. A large portion of the information contained within is just plain bullshit. Hell often times it placed there just for the laughs and to watch all the morons jump on it like it came from the good book.

So broken rover, stay and enjoy this forum for what it is. There isnt one person on this forum that has all the answers but there certainly is some good information that has come across these pages and there will continue to be with our without you.

So stay tuned broke, broken or not rover and youll see what a bunch of nice guys/gals reside on here.

Hell I didnt even get to make any redneck comments to yaal

Good luck,

Ron A

May your rover leak forever
your gears to grind & find
do your thing to your rig
I'll do the same with mine

rovers are'nt like people
they dont have blood or Ego's
personality they do have
unlike some posters la Disgo

enjoy your car, polish your typing
get a life & just stop sniping

or grow up & be civil

ya dont wanna see the next verse.
