MY WIFE AND I JUST TRADED OUR 2000 DISCO 2 FOR A NEW LAND CRUISER. WHY U ASK, LET ME TELL U, DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVED THE DISCO WHEN IT WORKED AND WOULD BUY ONE AGAIN IF THE QUALITY CAME UP 100% AND LRNA GOT THERE HEAD OUT OF THERE ASS AND BECAME CUSTOMER FRIENDLY. ANYWAYS OUR DISCO HAD BEEN IN THE SHOP OF A TOTAL OF 88 DAYS SINCE WE BOUGHT NEW, THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS THAT THE DRIVE SHAFT FELL OFF WHILE MY WIFE WAS DOING 60MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND ALMOST FLIPPED IT OVER, IT DAMAGED THE TRANNY SO BAD THEY HAD TO REPLACE IT. FOR ALMOST KILLING MY WIFE LRNA GAVE US A 12,000 MILE EXTENETD WARRANTY, WHOOO HOOO. WE HAD EVERY THING FROM THE COILS GOING BAD TO THE SECOND TRANNY NEEDING TO REPLACED. THE LAST STRAW WAS WE HAD A MAJOR FAILURE IN THE TRACTION CONTROL, LAND ROVER TOLD IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO GET THE PARTS AND RECOMMENDED NO TO DRIVE IT IN THE MEAN TIME. WE ASKED FOR A LOANER TO GET HOME AND THEY SAID THEY DIDNT HAVE ONE. LOL. I DROVE IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND TRADED IT IN, ME BEING HONEST TOLD TOYOTA ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH IT AND GAVE THEM THE SERVICE RECORDS. THEY GAVE ME 15,000 DOLLARS FOR A 2000 DISCO WITH ACE AND WINTER PACKAGE WITH 20,000 MILES ON IT. LOL I WASNT HAPPY LOOSING THAT MUCH ON THE DISCO BUT WAS TOTALY RELEAVED TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE A DEPENDABLE V8 SUV. LAND ROVER WILL BE OUT OF BUSSINESS QUICK IF THIS CONTIUES. I MUST NOT BE ALONE BECAUSE THERE IS AN ATTORNEY IN NJ WHO CONTACTED ME WHO DOES NOTHING BUT SUE LRNA BECAUSE OF THESE PROBLEMS. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW HE GOT MY NUMBER AND ADDY BUT HIS ENTIRE LIVING IS MADE FROM LRNA SCREW UPS AND HE IS DOING PRETTY WELL. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DISCO'S. JIM

sorry to hear the bad luck jim. i have a 94 and have had ZERO problems, maybe its just my luck or that its had everything that could go wrong already fixed. i must say that the lack of support is bad on the part of LRNA, but that could be an isolated event and may only apply to that area. i am in the med west and what i have seen of the local dealer has been very good. i have never actually used their shop services but i know some who have and they reported nothing bad. anyways good luck with the toyota.

There is an attourney in the PRoNJ (People's Republic of New Jersey)???? Really? You're kidding, right??
And I thought they only sued doctors.

Seriously, in my life I have spent about 15 years in NJ (where sue is a verb not a proper noun) and truly bleive it is as fine a state as any.
I can vouch for LRNA. I know of cases where they have given customers new vehicles for their lemons. It isn't clear from your message... did you file a claim with LRNA cust service?... it's actually quite easy, they can go much further than the dealer and are very friendly.

wow, now i feel silly for bitching about all of the trim problems i have had since i bought the 2002 disco in november.

- door handle falling off
- brake pedal problems galore
- vent levers broke
- power window quit working
- misaligned door (water and wind coming in, can't be fixed supposedly)
- misaligned glove box - wouldn't latch
- more rattles and sqeaks than you can shake a stick at, front to back

you've had REAL problems.

My dealer experiences have been poor as well. Two weeks without the vehicle at the worst point for a sunroof jam - but nothing compared to your problems. I only hope Nasser can fix Land Rover. D-Oh! I mean, I hope Mr. Ford can fix Land Rover. Oh, wait... that might not work either.

Jim,

What a bummer to hear all this, but I'm glad your wife survived her harrowing experience. Did you ever pursue the lemon laws in your state? I know all 50 states have them, and each state has a page devoted to the wording in the LR Owner's manual. Enjoy your LC.

Jim, I'm glad to hear your wife survived that awful experience. I had the exact opposite experience between Toyota and Land Rover. I used to own a Land Cruiser and hated bringing it in for service. They treated me very poorly, and the quality of people they hire is ridiculous! I did like my Land Cruiser but I LOVE my Disco. Upon my first visit to Land Rover I was very pleasantly greeted, asked if I would like complimentary coffee or donuts, and generally treated with much respect. At the time, I was dressed like a total bum and didn't expect to be treated so kindly. I inquired about a trailer hitch cover and the guy just pulled one out from behind the counter and gave it to me. I felt like I was in one of those hidden camera shows! I had gotten sooo used to being treated like shit by toyota. I had tried going to different toyota dealerships when I had the Land Cruiser and each one was worse then the last!

Any vehicle you buy could be a lemon, and I think you definately got a lemon with your Disco. However, I would rather spend a month in a maximum security prison than to go to another toyota dealership service center. If it's any consellation, Land Cruisers have a better repair record than Land Rovers. Good Luck with your Cruiser...

You should have posted it for sale here.

I would have given you more than 15k!

Sounds like the people who REALLY screwed you were the toyota people.

If its got warantee it can get fixed. And if you are in warantee they are pretty much REQUIRED to give you a loaner.

I would also like to add that I find it almost impossible that the front DS would fly off WITHOUT warning first.

Just because the light comes on does not make it a "major" traction control problem.

Good luck with your toy. I am sure you will be happy with it.

Ron

PS how many times did they replace your rad :)

$15K, that's absurd. Either you really wanted to get rid of that disco, or wanted to give away money.

Hey the grass is not always green on the other side. Try to get an honest poll from the Jeep crowd. My 2 were the bigest POS made

In fact as with all my cars the LR have been the least hassel. But that thing about the drive shaft falling off, I would have returned it then and there...

Good luck with your L Cruiser

I FEEL BAD FOR THIS GUY, HONESTLY I DO, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE HE LET HIMSELF BE TIED TO A BARREL AND THEN LET LROVER HAVE AT HIM A FEW TIMES AND THEN LET TOYOTA REALLY HAVE AT HIM.

WONDER WHO HIS JERK-OFF DEALER IS?

WONDER IF HE'LL GO TO A CADDY ESCALADE AFTER THE TOYOTA FAILS TO PLEASE.....

I'm sorry your experience sucked. As for dealers, manufacturers, and lemons.

I could tell you about the 1995 Dodge Dakota I bought new in 1996 that went through 4 cracked heads in 3.5 years/80k miles or the 1999 Nissan Frontier I bought in March of 2000 that Nissan just settled an arbitration with me over last week after 4 drive shaft carrier bearings failed in 18k miles.

The secretary of the law firm that just handled my Nissan case just had her 2000 Toyota Camry returned as a lemon and the girl at my auto insurance place has a law suit against Ford for her Mustang.

Lemons come in all shapes and sizes.

Good luck regardless.

Jim,

Can you email your attorney information to me? I do not have a problem, however I do know of someone who is in need of this service.

BTW....pray you never have to deal with Toyota on that level.

I have 2000 DII with 22000 miles and have enjoyed it very much. It seems to me that a dynamic component failure at freeway speed would have triggered a "liability" warning for LRNA and a severe Vibration alarm in my ass! This incident could have been a great Bargaining tool for lots of free crap from the Dealer.

Thinking aloud,

Paul

I have a 96, series one Disco 5 Speed. This is my, I think 13th LR. The urly Rangies had oil leaks etc.
The 1990 Tdi Disco I had was great, took a huge, and I mean huge pot hole at 80 miles/h in Kenia and survived it no problem. Needless to say the frame had to get attention. But the fact that she got me home from Kenia, 2000 miles after the fact was great.
Then I traded for a new 95 Defender Tdi, I drove home from the dealer and with only 10 miles on the clock, it started raining and guess what. I got home wet.
My current Disco has not seen the inside of a dealer shop. I service her myself. Have done so with all my LR's. Now I must sort of quote the Jeep guys and say, "Its a Land Rover thing, your bank manager won't understand"
I love my 96 Disco, I beat it to death. I have a offroad driving school in BC Canada now and she takes a beating every day.....
I do Safari's in Africa and use Defenders and Toyota's only.
PS, leave the oil leaks, it protects from rust....
The Cruiser is good but Toyota staff, well you will see.....

We currently own four Land Rovers and one Toyota Landcruiser. I have to say that the Landcruiser is a great vehicle, no doubt about it. It is a 1992 with about 165,000 miles on it and other than replacing brakes and some other minor problems such as air conditioning it has been problem free. Another thing I notice about the Landcruiser is, it has a great paint job. Believe it or not I have people still ask me if the vehicle is semi new. A previous 1997 Discovery in British racing green was having serious paint problems especially on a garage kept vehicle in only three years. I have had my fair share of problems with the rovers mechanically, electrically and exterior durability. Although Land Rovers are quirky British vehicles and at times seeming to drain my wallet, I still enjoy owning and driving Land Rovers. All the way from my 1965 Series IIA to the dico I's and II they carry so much heritage that to me is unbeatable by any other vehicle. Yes, I know other will disagree with that but with Rovers you either hate them or love them, and when you love them they become not just a form of transportation but rather a way of life. I know you will enjoy your new Landcruiser. Your not the first I have heard of changing from a Rover to a Landcruiser. Sorry to hear about your unfortunate problems involving your Rover. You must still have some ties to Rovers by seeking out Disco Web. Good luck.
