Scott, I agree with you. There have been negative comments made by people on this board about some of our members and our events. Those comments were made by people that have never been to one of our events nor do they personally know the members that they make comments about. We don't make comments about other clubs events/members unless we were there or have met the people. And even then we don't make negative comments, maybe suggestions for how the event could have been better.
However, for those that have come to our events, we have heard nothing but great things. Yes, there may be someone that didn't like some aspect of the event and said something negative, but not made the comments to us. We have only heard of good things or suggestions to make the events even better for the future.
There are more and more people that join the Rover community each year. Those of us that have been around for awhile should encourage those new to the Rover scene.
Our SAE event started nine years ago. For the first 6 years, the event was mainly open to SOLAROS members, due to the limited camping and trails we had open to us. In those 6 years the person who started this event did a great job, and every year grew with participation. Two years ago we decided to change the location and to invite Rover owners from around the country.
That was the 7th Annual SAE. For that "first" (open to those outside the club) event, we had approx. 135 trucks participate, and last year (8th) we had 167 trucks preregistered and totalled over 200 with registration at the event. This year we expect to have even more. Why? Because we try to put on a good event for Rover owners to come together for a weekend of camping, offroading, and CAMARADERIE. We don't talk bad about the other big events or those that put them on. Hell, we try to get as many of our members to attend them as well.
Each year we try and do more for the participants. From more trails, better food, improved camping, enough porta potties, etc. It is really a shame that people make negative comments about those that put so much into improving and encouraging the Rover 'scene'.
We know that every year there will be stuff that should have been done better, and every year we try to correct past inefficiencies. And we do brag about our efforts, not to offend others. But because we know we are doing our best each year to put on a great event for those attending. We are proud of our accomplishments with the event and hope that it continues to grow. Not because we want to have the largest or most attended event. We do this because we enjoy Rovers and getting together with other owners throughout the country for a great time together.
I know that large events are not some peoples thing, but just because you don't like large events doesn't mean that they are not any good.
Hell, someone suggested we increase our registration fee to make some money on our ever-growing event. We told them that we don't do this for the money, and as long as we are able to put on the event at the current rate, we will do so.
Here is a run down of where our money on the event goes.
Registration money is used to reimburse the club for expenses for putting on the event. Any extra is donated to a charity.
T-shirt money after expense is donated to a charity.
All the raffle and auction money is donated to a charity.
Last year we donated over $4000 to the 9-11 fund.
We covered our expense and everything else is donated. And every year since its beginning has been that way.
So, to wrap this up. We are doing our best to put on a great event for the participants and help charities along the way. We don't ask for anything in return, however we are tired of people that have never attended making negative comments.
We welcome all those that want to attend. If they didn't like some aspect of the event, then tell us then and there, so we can make the event better for the future. Don't wait and make comments on this board or any other board as it is less effective in getting to the people that need to know. We have always heard great things from those that actually attended and hope that the event is better each and every year.
Thanks, Norman

Eric, my post above was not directed at your comments/questions on this thread. There have been comments made on this board in the past directed at our event and some of our members. That is the reason for the above post.
If anyone, including yourself, have any questions about the event then check the website out (as you did), if there are any additional questions please feel free to contact the event coordinator, as he can give you (or anyone)specifics that may be needed.
Again, we welcome all Rover owners to our event and try to put together a great weekend for those participants. Thanks, Norman

Kyle, my comments were not about drinking. My comments were concerning some people making negative comments about our members and events. The comments were in bad taste and have happened as recently as this past May.

I'm not sure. Look, all I'm saying is that we would like people to come to the event before making comments on it or our members. If someone attends and doesn't like some aspect then tell us there so that we can improve future events.
I met a guy once who said he hated mardi gras. He went on and on about it. I asked him if he had ever been. He said no. The next year he went and his tone had changed. He then went on and on about how much fun he had.
That is the point that we are making.
Have a good day.

I gotya Norm. And now "The other end " of it. The site is for talking about experiences. People are gonna come and talk. Thats gonna spark convo and you are gonna get good and bad press. Its a club type event and I will probably always talk some shit about it..... But you already knew that.. :)

Kyle,
You are exactly correct about people discussing their experiences.I would just like for everyone to have an experience to discuss.I get from your post that you do not like clubs or club events.Thats fine,I am not going to condem you for that,or any opinon that you have. You are free to enjoy yourself in any manor you please.Just don't form your opinon before you have had the experience.

My opinion is formed from experience Scott. Are you saying your club event is that much differnt then any of the others ? You willing to take the pepsi challenge ?? :)

If Kyle doesn't go for the club scene don't make a big deal out of it. It isn't for everyone and I agree with some of his comments on the other thread. I got all caught up in the "novice gets talked into a tougher trail than he's learned how to handle" routine and lost a damn sideview mirror and rear panel for my time and trouble at Tellico a couple years ago. Big deal, I learned a hell of a lot in the process. But not everyone is comfortable at the club events because they are large and they have a somewhat "commercial" feel to them.

At the end of the day we all know Kyle is a good driver and enjoys wheelin' like the rest of us. So he doesn't get into the club ride stuff, big deal.

I know I'll be there and it will fun as hell.

Corporate involvement is a part of it, yep. But doesn't bother me. In fact, I enjoyed seeing folks like JBS from Rovertym and David from Thatched Roof Garage at last years MAR. I don't have to buy everything I see, and I like seeing that kind of stuff. But it ain't for the purists, so...whatever..., what were we talking about?
