This roof rack was made by myself, using 15 pieces of 1/2 inch emt tubing, ea 10' long to start, 2 10'lenghts of 1/2 by 1/2 square steel tubing and 20' of 1'cold rolled stock @ 1/16 thick, alot of bending and welding were required. this project took me about 12 hours of spare hours now and then, the final result is a rack that has weight distribution the full length of gutters, I've put two adults = 350+ pounds total up there without any problens, now i've set to work on the intergrated air dam as well as flooring, This may go out the window, but for me and the 50.00 bucks spent thus far, I like it, I just thought i'de share this with all you cool-o-guys on the disco web.

Peter, I think it looks great. The only thing I would have added is some railing to keep items in should the straps get loose. Overall, very nicely done.

EMT? Conduit? How is it fastened at the overlaps?

Looks very professional. The only thing I would be concerned about is that its not supported only at the four posts, like on a stock disco rack, so you better be careful when loading it up with a heavy weight and then going bumping around.

Glad to see you got the scratches out:)

Is it cadmium or zinc?

You can grind that zinc off before welding, you just have to do a good job painting or powdercoating afterward. I've built a couple of CB roof racks myself and no one has gotten sick from galvanizing fumes yet.

I was in a three bay garage with all doors open, no harm done. and i cant see why to worry about a heavy load, the weight would be distributed throught the entire gutter length as i see it, i could be wrong, and thanks guys, I'll post more pics when the flooring is done, as well as my mpg when the air dam is also on, the only thing that i dont like now is that i think that it might look x terra ish with the air dam, and i dont want that!!!!!!
Dean, pinies in august? a big day with lots o folks!

Sounds good Peter. Start up a thread.

great design and right along the lines I intend to use when I make my rack. I had intended to use 3/4" welded steel tubing mainly because I have the bending tools and tubing on hand from my antenna mount business. I figure that I can spread out the weight distribution around the gutter with the stronger rigid tubing and make it less heavy by using fewer legs - maybe three in the middle and one at front and back.

Anyone made one with the primary support legs on the front and rear gutters?

Actually it would really be kool to use square aluminum tubing except that's so dam expensive and would be really noisy.

What's the noise level

now all you need is one of my antenna mounts to compliment that new rack, let you use a longer antenna, improve your CB radio reception/trans as well as preventing your antenna from pounding the heck out of your roof in the woods ;-). See me at www.out-backeam.com

I've got a 6' antenna for highway trips, seems to work well, the wind noise starts up at 60-65 mph and isn't too bad at all, and once the air dam and flooring is on i suspect that it will go away, but time will tell, I did think about using 3/4 tubing, and you're right, I'de probly need less to achive the same strength, this rack will be used for a year or so or until i feel that i have found all the short commings and know hot to improve on them all to make a truely great rack! i'm glad that i'm getting this good feedback, and great ideas torward making a better CB roof rack!!!!
