So funny that the beginnings of this web site was mentioned in passing on another thread today, because I was having the same conversation with another D-Webber today. Neither of us had a clue as to the genesis of DiscoWeb, but it seems to have begun in a chat room, far, far away.....?

Long ago, in a (mental) galaxy far away, the Jedi-Discos collected their Force to withstand the advancing ravages of the Dark Side of off-road driving (Explorers and such). On a small planet at the western edge of the galaxy California, Ho-won-kanobee sent out a call for assistance from other Jedis. Yoda Haakonsen and Kyle Skywalker responded in true Jedi fashion.

(Someone else take it from here.)

As I recall it, it started with a question on the Rovers North BBS. Somebody asked if anybody knew of an email list dediacted to the Discovery. Later that day, Paul Morrison posted that he had created the lr-discovery egroup.
A few months later, Paul, Ho, Kyle and myself were talking about creating a website to go along with the email list. I don't recall who came up with the name, but I do remember us spending quite a bit of time on coming up with a name that would be easy to recognize and remember. Once we settled on DiscoWeb, the site became discoweb.org, because discoweb.com and discoweb.net was already taken by that spanish record web store I am sure you have all seen by now.
After a year or so, Paul left the DW team due to other comittments, and there were only Ho, Kyle and myself left. Two server moves and a lot of pictures later, here we are.

Axel,

I like my story better. It has more "mystique". (More force?)

In fact, if you really want to raise more funding for this site, try marketing some of those nifty Disco-light sabres. (Just don't let Kyle have one.)

It was hard coming up with the DiscoWeb name! I recall sitting in chat with a link to register.com. Name taken, name taken, that name won't work, etc., etc. It obviously had to have the term Disco in it somewhere! :) I think we saw another site like FordWeb or similar and thought that would work fine. Um, I mean DiscoWeb...

Anyhow, I think the list got going in April/May of 99 and the site sometime during July of 99. It's amazing to see some of the old names around and some that I haven't seen around in a lonnggg time.

Boy am I starting to miss my Disco. It was especially hard seeing it on the road last night with the new driver behind the wheel... Really strange...

And as long as you're all talking about the good ol' days - I miss that really nice guy who passed away (I think his name was Kris??? - sorry, I have alzheimers) back before DiscoWeb was around. He deserves some credit for making the e-group such a pleasurable and informative list to come back to.

I'd swear he was the alter-ego of Kyle Van Tassle - an absolute wealth of knowledge but without all the attitude. (just kidding! ok, maybe not - hehe)

He he. Love the online magazine. Funny to see Ho with his truck on a forklift and up on a rock. There is even mention of a K&N, and click enough and you will find the sand ladders! I am surprised John Lee even became associated with such a derelict.

A little more clicking and out pops John Lee in a Disco. The defender dark side must have got him!

Brian,

Was it Kristofer Swanson you are referring to? He's in the photo gallery. I never knew him, but I heard mention of him. Very sad.

Kim:

Yes, that was him. Again, a really nice guy. He spent a lot of time e-mailing and explaining stuff to me (and just about everyone else) when I was a newbie.

It was an accident involving firearms. Let's just leave it at that.
