Anyone with a Startac handsfree? I want one, but want to make sure its worth a few bucks.

Does the mic pic up, is the speaker loud enough? Can it be hardwired? What mount do you use with it.

Hey guys,

I have a startac handsfree kit installed in my '95 Disco. I have the new startac 60c. The hands free kit comes in two models, one plugs into the cigarette lighter and one gets hardwired into the vehicle. I have the latter. The mic is OK, not great but OK. If you connect a headset, I have a great headset, it picks up your voice better. I don't know if all headsets sound better than the included mic, but as I said my headset is really awsome. Not sure of the model of my headset, but it's black and medium blue and cost around $35 bucks. The advantage of having a headset, along with the hands free kit, is you can have a conversation without everyone in the car hearing the person your talking to.

The speaker I had mounted in the passengerside kick panel. It is usually plenty loud enough. I say usually because if your on the highway, with the windows open, it gets difficult to hear. Again, the headset I have helps in this situation as well.

The mounts come in two styles. One is a flexible metal gooseneck similar to what you'd find on a microphone stand. The second, the one I got, is a rigid piece of steel about a 5" tube. I mounted it on the passenger side driveline hump, next to the gearshift lever. It adjusts via a couple of plastic wingnut type things, and is quite adjustable.

In another vehicle I owned prior to this one, I mounted a hands free kit with the flexible gooseneck type, and didn't find it nearly as Nice. It was more difficult to adjust and have it stay that way, and it just got worse over time. Repeated bending of the gooseneck loosened it terriblly.

I like the kit for my phone but they vary from phone model to phone model. One last word on the antenna. I didn't have a choice from the Verizon dealer here in NY. The only one that was included in the kit was the glass mounted one. I was told that this is the least effective type. The vehicle mounted antenna is supposedly much more effective. It in essence turns the entire vehicle into a antenna. The down side is you have to drill a hole in your vehicle. I haven't had any problems with reception with the glass mount but would like to find out more. Good Luck and Hope this helped

I've got a startac. I use a Plantronics M140 headset which I've been using for a few yrs, and it's awesome.

For about 2 yrs, I used one of those goose neck type univ cell mounts, but then I figured out a better way to mount my startac. I used an extra 'plastic belt clip' and used strong 3m double sided tape and stuck the belt clip to the right hand side switch cluster on the binacle (where the rear wiper/cruise switches are). The startac sits very nicely in it's new mount.

When I get home tonight I'll snap a pic to show you.

Take Care,
-Tommy

Hey Tommy, great job! I love seeing ideas people have come up with for little stuff like that. Yours looks really good though, better than most. I have some pics of my setup I took recently, but I have no idea how to put them on here, LOL. I'm a dumb jock but I'm trying to learn about this techno-crap. Isn't that plantronics awsome??? I originally bought some other brand and it sucked so I returned it. They said I should try this plantronics one and I couldn't believe the difference. I'm not sure what model I have but it's blue. Anyway, cool setup.
