I have to admit, I really like David G.'s Freelander. No, it's not going to follow a Disco off-raod, but that's not what it's meant for.... it will nicely do what 90% of the populace needs, and better than the CRV/Escape/RAV4.... If I had the extra cash, they wife would be driving one now..... but, one day, I can tell ya that she will eventually have one. -L |

I like it. I have been looking at one for my wife, too. We took a test drive in one a couple of monts ago, it's a nice little car, and it handles great. |

It's quicker than the Disco, and is more road-worthy. Better size for her than the tall Disco, too. I like the steptronic tranny... it's fun to play with (I was gentle, David!! ) -L |

i took a drive over to Midwest Auto Group in dublin , Ohio, and spent a couple of hours in, under and around an se freelander. i have to say it is a real nice car. everyones arguement is that it won't compete with the disco, but its not designed to. it has some real neat features you find in the RR and the Disco, so its not a watered down version of a good idea designed to run againest the japanese. my wife starts OSU in the fall, i have promised her one. its a good car and will fit in very well in the market its designed to compete in. IMHO |

Got a Freelander SE about 2 months ago...love it so far..for what it was built to do, it's awesome, and way better than all those lame "cute-utes" everyone and their brother has. |

how about finding a freelander on salvage title for under 5 grand. one that some high school cheerleader crashes when she drops her cigarette. rip the axles out from under it and bolt a couple LR straight axles under it. the narrow body would look awsome and work well on tight trails. the tapered body looks made for off camber trails dont even fix the body damage...that way you could bash and trash from day 1 guilt free. bet it would be pretty impressive |

Ron, Are you talking about that "Freeranger" in LRO a while ago? Had a caption that went something like, "...just goes to show you really can put just about anything on a Range Rover chassis" |

the freelander is more torsionaly rigid than any other landrover. Not bad for a unibody. |

You guys will be impressed when you see it perform on the trail. We have a white V6 auto in the LLRU, and it kicks ass on snow. All it needs are the right tires, a LOT of body protection, and a nice demountable 6000lb winch. The owner is currently modifying it. I was really impressed with it, and it does have a nice power punch. Nadim |

WHY. What was Land Rover thinking when they came out with the Freelander. One of the best things about owning a Rover is that not everyone and there mother has one. Three kinds, D90, Disco, and Range.Think about it. When you think of Land Rover you think of Luxury and off-road ability and at least 35 grand. Now, the Freelander. Yeah it's nice, but why did Rover have to stoop down to the Rav-4/Sidekick/CRV level? Let them have all the SUV wanna B's. Every teeny-bopper in the world will have one now, they'll be as many Freelanders as Jeeps. And, before you know it, they'll be driving around with lift kits or drop kits--20 in chrome wheels or 14 in gold wheels-- glitter gold paint jobs or neon green paint. Just my opinion though, i like the basics. |

You answered your own question: "Every teeny-bopper in the world will have one now, they'll be as many Freelanders as Jeeps." The car business is about selling cars. Land Rover thinks they can make money by going into a different market segment, and they would not have done that unless they thought they can make money. "It's the economy, stupid." |

As far as there being as many FL as Jeeps, I really doubt that, even if LR wildly exceeds its sale projections. Jeep sells 200,000+ vehicles a year, Land Rover is targeting 20,000 Freelanders. Your comment may have been more for effect then anything else, but I wouldn't worry about seeing FL everywhere...in the 3 months we've had ours (we live in the DC area), my wife and I have seen a grand total of 3 other Freelanders...I see 3 Jeep Libertys a day. |

The back and rear 3/4 views are not bad...it's the front that makes me want to vomit. I test drove one before I bought our Freelander and while I liked a lot about it (interior ergonomics, acceleration, overall value), I liked tlooks of the FL 10x better and thought the Jeep rode and handled like a stagecoach compared to the FL. |

the only good part (exterior) of the jeep liberty is the front bumper, front wheel arch & fender, and front panel forward of the door - as viewed from the side. The rest is all fluff (especially the tailights and spare placement)... |

I agree. I have tried and tried to give it time to grow on me. It's not working. I still hate that little dootie pile. Especially the front end. What's up with those headlights. They look "suprised" like a bad facelift. |

Tell you what.. I test drove one when our dealership 1st got them and, while it was nice, I didnt feel right in it. Now, I have been driving one for almost a week and a half while my disco is in the shop, and I really like it. I could see having one as my everyday driver. The only thing i dont like about it is that the seat is too high in the S model. The HSE is supposed to have a lower seat in which case would be perfect for my use. The stereo kicks ass and the cloth heated seats warm up way faster than my leather disco ones. Chris von C |

We are currently driving a Freelander courtesy of our dealer who is fixing the Disco and fixing and fixing..... It's not bad, much peppier, handles nicely, don't know if I would want to send it out off the back roads with my disco. It was introduced in England/Europe in 1997 and it is the top selling vehicle over there in its class. As someone mentioned previously, it's all about money..... Cheers |

Hello everyone - Just browsing around looking for feedback on the Freelander. I'm in the market for a mini SUV as a daily driver and the Freelander appeals to me. I don't mind spending a little bit more for something a little better than the Escape or Liberty etc. I havn't driven one yet - but have been through it at the dealer. I'm overall quite impressed but a couple of things are bugging me - and these have been reported in one or two articles, namely lack of side air bags and lack of arm rests on front seats. I don't think this will be enough to dissuade me if everything else is right about the car, but if these items were to appear in the 2003 model I might wait. Any comments about these items or the car overall compared to the Escape would be welcome from this prospective Landrover owner. (P.S. I'm a Brit ex-pat so the thought of an English engineering doesn't scare me off too much.) |

my girlfriends, sisters husband (no really) has an Escape. even without driving either of them......just what i have seen......they don't compare. the escape does have a decent size V-6, but the similarities seem to end there. sure the folks here that actually have one can bring some more insight to this. |

LOL.... I wholly concur.... David' Freelander's much zippier than the Disco. The Disco lumbers along by comparison.

Has anyone seen any head-to-head comparisons? I try not to put too much weight on them, however I do get curious as to what the auto press might say. Javier |

I haven't seen a write-up anywhere comparing the two, but have seen that the Freelander has hit it off w/ a lot of the car-mags. IMHO, it's for the same reasons that I've said, and I'll continue to stand by that, too.... The Freelander is much more civil on the road. It's smoother, quicker, more fuel-efficient (it's NOT an Accord! but it's better than a Disco), and its a good size. I'm eager to see David's at Uwharrie.... -L |

armrests are available for around $100. Go to www.freelanderowners.com to find out where to order. There very nice armrests in leather. |
