Has somebody done this conversion? I wonder if it is possible to put the GEMS-type engine into the classic with the GEMS-ECU(thinking that its ingnition system is superior to the Lucas HotWire thing). Or is it unavoidable to retain all the ancillaries and distributor and old ECU etc. ?? regards Hendrik |

Lots of people have done this conversion. You get lots of bottom end torque with the 4.6, and it is a smoother running engine too. You need to put a 3.9(distributor)type cam, front engine cover and a distributor too. You would also need to rechip the ECU, but just forget about the GEMS system in a classic. "Hotwire" refers to the airflow meter, not the ignition system. You can use an AFM from a GEMS system though, which is less restrictive to the airflow than the CUX AFM. But the GEMS AFM is less reliable, and would require reprograming the ECU. I am considering the Bosch AFM which is relatively cheap and reliable. The Lucas ignition system is really difficult to beat for a distributor based system. The main advantage of the GEMS distributorless system is that is has a "map" for determining the optimum timing. The disadvantage is that you cannot change the program yourself, the GEMS ECU has to be reprogramed. Randall |

Ok. Thanks. (I feel a knock sensor, like found on the GEMS is a good thing). Is the Bosch AFM a direct substitute for the Hotwire ? h. |

Hendrik I have my base timing set at 12 DBTDC and it never pings, but I only use premium fuel. I think they are all "hotwire". Up til 1998 they were made by Hitachi. The metal Hitachi AFMs used on the classic are very good design, except the bore is only 2.2" If you want to switch to a larger bore or later model AFM, this will require reprograming of the ECU to interpret the new input signal, and also a wiring adapter. Most people would think this is an expensive modification, but easy to do if you can pay for the parts. Randall |

Hendrik, I have just finished converting my 87 RR. It now has the 4.0 GEMS system in it complete with all serpentine belt ancilliaries. I looked into what it would cost to retrofit a distributor and it was cheaper to have the GEMS ECU rechipped and modified to ignore the Immobilizer.
