Hey guys, I saw this very interesting first drive article of the up and coming VW Touareg. Man, if the tech data in this article are indeed "real-life" data, I think we have another very interesting trail vehicle. Hmmm... it sounds convincing...

Wow - that is one nice sounding ride! It looks a little plasicky for real off road fun, but it still looks like a great vehicle.

I agree, that VW sounds real interesting. I could imagine the reaction on the trails. My wifes Jetta you look at the bumper covers the wrong way and they get scratched. I'd hope the aftermarket could come up with some nice metal bumpers to help that. The VW (water cooled) aftermarket isn't really set up to deal with off road. But a 550 lbs fts torque and 24mpg, I'm drooling. We need to start a tread about putting that motor into a disco ;-)

Curtis, you know about those plastic bumpers... lol. One of you guys with a camera the day we saw that vw "suv" should post picures of it here. Show VW's R and D department out testing one of there new "trucks".

Holy crap, did everyone read this? Look at those krauts go!

"Standard on all models are electronically controlled center and rear differential locks, a true low-range gear set.. optionally V8, V10 TDI...watertight door and tailgate seals and engine air intakes that have been relocated higher in the engine compartment. Volkswagen also showed a prototype of what they are calling the "extreme" package which includes numerous skid plates, air suspension as standard equipment, sway bar links that electronically disconnect to allow more independent wheel motion, a front differential..."

get rid of the plastic and the lame body style and they've got my attention.

I don't know if they still have it but they use to have that 2 year 24,000 mile warranty. I thought a 3year 36000 was sorry. I do however see many old ones still going strong, but then again with enough work you can keep Land Rovers going strong too. Its a love/hate relationship, mostly love though.

yeah, brian, the drivetrain looks real good (on paper). Too bad it's attached to a Jetta....

The big problem with vw is that they make really nice cars with great options on drivetrain, motor, etc. then never import them to the US because they don't have the market. I could see a US verson come, but watered down on those paper spec's. Unfortunty rover is guilty of the same, TDI, 110, 90, etc. Oh well ...

ya, that whole cutesy styling (like the Freelander) has got to go! Does anyone know what the chassis will look like? Blue, I hope you're not saying that it'll be on the Jetta platform.

no, just a sarcastic remark about all this high-tech (and I'd also assume heavy-duty) locker and skid plate business coupled with a cute little Volkswagen body. Looks like a jetta. VW's are extremely nice products, but I think of college girls or guys in ties when I think of VW's - I don't think of the burly off-road crowd.

Err... am I still allowed to drive my Disco? I own a Jetta and Discovery currently and in the past multiple VWs from air cooled to water cooled before the Disco. Does that mean I'm not a burly offroader? Crap I need to get rid of this mullet quick.

Jeez Andy, I just read your post. I think Matt went down and met with that guy today to talk about having him fab some mods. That VW van must have had 10" of lift.

Blue...don't go knockin' on Jettas. I just got my wife a VR6 GLX wagon and it will lay out some major whoop-ass. I drive it every chance I get :)

...oh yeah...plastic bumpers rock! Andy will vouch that I had mine twisted up and bent nearly 90 degrees last weekend. Coupla kicks to the side and some of Andy's special duct tape and I was rollin'

I think some duct tape on the Touareg is all you need. Besides it looks more like a Passat. Which I happen to also like.

who's knockin jettas (or any other VW)? Please don't tell me that when you think of VW, lockers and skidplates come to mind?

I'd drove the jetta and golfs when I was car shopping with my sister. Contrary to my advice, she went with a Honda Civic (another good little car, but VW is just nicer). I'd really dig on a suped-up golf for a commuter... What's the peppy one I drove, a TDI?

VR6 GTI :)

No, the TDI is the peppy one. The GTI is the fast one ;-) BTW, go with the 1.8T GTI, not the VR6. VW posts way lower power figures for the 1.8T because it's so close to the more expensive VR6 that it would be the only one to sell if they published honest numbers. The 1.8T is also better for modding.

Niall is right on the modding part, but oh-so-wrong on the other. The VR6 has been revamped into a 4V and now is 200HP. They boosted the turbo on the 1.8T and it is 180HP. The 1.8T is cheaper to mod to get some decent gains, but they pretty much stop at 250-300HP because it is pretty well maxed at the factory. Even the old VR6 is fully capable of 300HP with about $2K and can do 600HP with about $8K. The 1.8T is a great motor, but I am a big fan of the VR6. When you are looking for a long lasting (and fast) stock motor or a major haul ass machine (with some bucks) the VR6 is the best of the two. If you are broke, but certainly going to mod the engine and want best bang for the buck, the 1.8T is perfect.

Damn...I wish Rover were so kind to us :)

From what I heared, the 1.8T engine pumps out 180 horses and it's the same engine they used for the Audi A4s and TTs. Audi advertises a peak HP of 180 and VW advertises 170 so the Audi would still retain its seniority over its corporate cousin. Ferdinand Piech (VWAG chairman) wanted to have one big happy family.

Funny how disco owners and vw owners are kind of the same types. Real vw fans will virtual drive and mod as much as disco owners. Nows lets look into that v-10 tdi into a disco 1 mod.

LOL - I would love the V-10 in my DS2.

Glenn, VW has now "officially" upped thier 1.8T to 180. I am not sure if they upped the Audi for 2002.5, but I bet they have. I drove the new A4 with the 1.8T and a manual it felt more responsive and "fun' over thier 4V 3.0 V6. It was the opposite with the auto, but who wants that anyway?

We opted for the Jetta GLX VR6 Wagon with Sport suspension and a manual. It is 97% as nice at 80% the price :) I have to restrain myself to keep it under the century mark. I also get to let my Rover alter-ego go and feel this need to race everyone :)

Curtis... that's gotta be a sweet car. Do they have the 4 motion with the 6spd gearbox yet? I've always wanted a german wagon. I wish they would bring the Audi RS6 here... But then again, I wouldn't be able to afford it

Glenn,

It is a freaking blast. I can't wait until the warranty runs out and I can tinker with the motor. One of those things...you get a lot and then want more :) No dice on the 4Motion in the Jetta...only in the Passat...another nice car. 6 speeds are now coming with the new VR6 in Jetta though.

Blue: that was the A4 I drove with the 1.8T and the V-6. It was very, very uninspiring. Not that it was bad. It was actually quite civil. However, after just getting out of the 1.8T manual A4, it just did not have the same spirit :)

That was supposed to read: "...(the new auto) in both the 1.8T and V6 flavors".

Funny, Last week I defended vw's saying how much I liked my wifes Jetta. Today we're picking up an A4 Avant 1.8T that is replacing it. So VW's suck, :) At least this will make it so I can put in lockers and taller tires on my disco, my wife probably won't want to drive my disco anymore.

You can't go wrong with Audi's. They are built like tanks, and have race-proven technology. I remember hearing about how Audi's really sucked in the 80's, but now they are among the best the world has to offer. Have you seen the new RS6 with 450hp? It makes M5 owners (my dad) really pissed! But it costs like $12000 more than an M5, that's what I tell my dad to calm him down. It should be interesting to see the specs on the RS6. I'm guessing 0-60: 4.4 and 1/4 below 13. That should shame the M5, damn!!!

Nice car! Is this the new A4? Manual?

Actually its a year old least return. 1.8 t with the manual five speed. It suprised me how damn strong that motor pulls. It suppose to have the 180 hp chip from the factory and it sure feels like it. I have my speed fix for sure. We drove a 2.3 6cyl linked to an auto, maybe because it was a 98 with higher miles and a slushbox, but it didn't feel as strong to my wife and myself. The dealer told me that A4's will no longer be imported to the us with the 1.8 t motor, only 3.0 6 cyl. Don't know if thats true. We looked at volvo wagons because my wife wanted one, I said lets look at audi's. The audi is light years ahead of volvo, I think the 80's audi's poor reputation forced audi to make the cars they do now. It was a good thing, they are really nice cars. All she wanted was a volvo wagon, 2 seconds into the A4 test drive she said "we're getting an Audi".

Who is the dealer? They must be on crack. I know that Dave Strong here sells a lot more 1.8's that 6's. For good reason as you now know. The 6's tend to come with slushbox's while the 1.8T's get ordered in manual. I think the Audi slushbox leaves a lot to be desired. Aw hell - all auto's leave a lote to be desired.

You in for a road ride tomorrow? (hope this is the right Andy!)

This is the right Andy. We bought it from Dave Strong, the sales guy said they all were upset about lossing the 1.8t motor. We drove a A6 wagon with the 6 cyl and the shifter buttons on the steering wheel. Those buttons are a joke. I sure agree about the auto's are not that desirible. The manuals Audi makes are so nice, my guess, in europe most of the audis probably come with manuals, the auto is to please the US market.
Curtis
When do you want to ride? Also want to try setting up some wheeling this weekend?

Eric, the Porsche Cayanne and VW Touaseaerage(sp?) are blood brothers.

There is a similar article about the Porsche on the same website. Or read about it at porschecayenne.com.

Did I read right and did that article state that a front diff is available in the extreme VW? Or did he mean "front diff lock".

Looking at those two SUJs (sport utility jokes), I love the unique styling of my Disco even more.

i think both trucks will be good vehicles in the paris dakar

i kinda of feel the same way javier except i like the unique styling of my G...

and yes i think the extreme will have front diff locks...Germans/Austrians make the axles strong enough to handle them-the G, the mog, and the Pinz (made by the same people as the G) have diff locks standard....

i will be interested to see how well they hold up on these new trucks....
