I was looking at the Joy Biran updated pics and i looked at the pic in the first column last row. It looks like the guy is sitting next to a bong.

It is a hookah or sometimes called a "Turkish water pipe," not really a bong.
The tall part of the hookah is basically a long decorative tube that extends into a heavy glass base. The glass base is filled with water high enough to cover the bottom part of the tube that extends into it. The "tube" and the base need to have an airtight seal. On top of the "tube" there is a bowl that is fitted. This is where you put whatever it is you are smoking, many people use a hookah to smoke flavored tobacco. The top of the bowl is usually covered with aluminum foil that has holes poked in it. On top of the foil you set a burning coal. The tray a few inches below the top of the hookah is for the ash from the coal. The hose is what you smoke out of. It is usually connected right above the base and opens up into the air chamber above the water in the base. So when you suck on the tube, it sucks in through the bowl and whatever it is you are smoking, down the tube into the water, through the water, into the open chamber of air in the top of the base, through the hose into you.

I spent some time in the Middle East '90-91. Every hotel I checked into had some dude hangin out in the lobby on some pillows enjoying a "smoke". You can even invite more people over for a "group smoke" |

MTB, i see your point, but the enjoyment of the smoke can be enhanced as it crosses over the liquid and brings with both the aroma and taste that can only be felt deep in the lungs as it is drawn in. i apologize if the use of "bong" offends your tender feelings. we should all sit around the hookah and enjoy the companionship of good smoke, good alcohol and a comfortable rug!

LOL...I know some people like to mix in a little pot with their flavored tobacco in a hookah, although I have never tied it.
As the white beard Midwest honky I am, the use of the word bong also offends me. Calling a hookah a fancy bong is like calling a Land Rover a fancy Jeep.
