I posted earlier that I was looking to sell my Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4 to get a Disco I. It turns out I found a 1999 Disco on a lot locally with 55K that is a one owner lease return. The owner of the lot is willing to trade my Dodge for the Disco plus around $500. What do you think? Obviously I would get the Disco fully checked out, I am just looking for insight on price and such. I have not seen the truck yet but have received a dozen or so pictures. I plan to look at it tomorrow or Sat. AM (it is quite a drive for me). I figure I may get $17,500 if I sold my truck personally or $16-16.5K on trade with a dealer. Essentially I'd be getting the Disco between $16-17K and not have to pay for tax on the purchase other than the $500. Keep in mind I am in the NW and these things tend to fetch a premium up here. Details of the truck - appears to be in great shape. Dealer just put new brakes on it. Has Brush with two lights and tail light guards. White/Tan combo. I don't think it has sunroofs, failed to ask and can't tell from the photos. Any insight? Should I jump on it if it passes tech? Saves me the hassle of selling my truck. Also - how much is a safari roof rack? I'd love to wait for a truck with one but they are few and far between. Thanks, Todd |

sounds like a pretty good deal, and i would go with a 99. the newer, the better(generally speaking). Roof racks can be had new anywhere from 780ish to 1100, or you can buy used(check ebay, this board, etc.) Make sure you drive it and test the CDL. If the CDL doesnt want to shift into lock or low range, use that to talk the price down. Also get under the truck and check for leaks, etc. Will |

Selling a car privately is a bitch. FYI- I buddy of mine who does all the auction purhasing for Carmax said that Kelly Blue Book or kbb.com is an accurate source for looking up values. He said that the trade in value is pretty close to auction prices although it is sometimes a little high. |

I checked Edmunds and KBB and both come back with this as being a deal in my favor. KBB specifically said trade in was around $16.5K. Any idea what an extended warranty would be price wise (if I can get one for it). Thanks, Todd |

That sounds like a very good deal if the truck is in good shape. I've seen only one 99D1 at a lower price and it was not in good shape at all and had a funny smell inside. Other things to check: Prop shafts Rust or water leakage if sunroofs General undercarriage damage Good luck. |

Sounds like a quick and easy plan. To me, avoiding all the selling hassles of your truck and getting this is also worth money in the bank. Plus, any time you don't have to pay Uncle Sam, that is a bonus. However, are you sure that you won't have to? I thought when you register a newer vehicle from a private party sale, they don't care how much you paid for it, you pay some tax amount based upon they type of vehicle and the year. Tom |

Regarding the warranty it all depends on wether or not the vehicle is still under factory Land Rover warranty. If it is you will have a much easier time getting an extended warranty through Land Rover or an outside source such as credit unions, insurance companies, and warranty companies. If it is under factory usually you can get one through the dealership (land Rover) for about 2 year 24,000 but it is very expensive somewhere in the 3 to 4 thousand range. I just went through all of this with my disco which is unfortunately out of factory but I still found a company after months of research (it seemed) that was the most reliable, affordable and value. It is a 4 year 48,000 mile extended with a 100 deductible and it ran for under 2,000. If your interested drop me an email and I can explain to you more about what I have found about extended warranties. Most important thing is be very careful with some extended warranty companies, especially those you find on the internet, that they are actually legitimate companies. |

If you purchase the Disco. Good Luck w/ the dealerships in WA. They are the same owner and over-charge everything. Also, you need to go back many times because they NEVER fix it the first time. |

Hence my post a few days back about independant shops. I don't plan to use the dealership unless absolutely necessary. Thanks though. Todd |

that sounds like a good deal. Think about it: for $500 you'll be ditching something you obviously don't want and picking up something you do want. Selling a vehicle yourself is a major pain in the ass. Think of all the time it'll take you to sell, then how much time will it take to find your Disco, and how much time you'll be without a vehicle. Time is money, man. Go for it. 1999 D1 is the best bet, too. Hell, see if you can knock the guy down to $250 or less |
