Check out this article on the new Rangie. There's a pic at the bottom of the page that looks like the truck has hummeresque articulation. Eeewwwwww!

What are you talking about? Didn't you read all the great reviews about how great the new truck is? It's WAaaaayy better than any other rover that's come before it. It's got limited slip and ETC...

Don't be swayed by the actual evidence. Just read what they tell you in the brochure.

LOL... ROFLMAO... hahahahaaha.... oh... $hit! That's the future of Land Rover!

The ONLY thing I like about the new Rangie is the engine. The 4.4 BMW V8 kicks butt but I can just get an X5 if I wanted a station wagon for the wife... oh wait I did.

I thought the new RR has like 14 inches of rear drop and 11 inches in the front? Isn't that more than the Discos (1 & II)? I, personally, haven't seen one on the road yet, but it seems that it will do better than most other SUVs when it comes to play time.

Well,

Maybe they had the suspension tied up in that picture to throw off the competition (like the Hummer or Xterra).

I've also heard that they are great off-road, that's why I was surprised to see the photo. I didn't actually read that article either, I just look at the pictures ;-)

Boxy or not I think if I was looking for a new SUV in that price range for myself I would get the G500. And as I said before, the X5 for a non-offroad SUV/Station wagon. It's interesting that the RR has the older version of the BMW 4.4 engine. The newer engine has 8hp more (not that that's much) and the other 4.4 BMW engine that's in the 745 has 325hp.

Ho, I thought you'd wait for the 2004 model when the optional in dash pizza oven will become available.

I don't think it will have a pizza oven, not good for yuppies on the run. But perhaps it will have a Starbucks express cappucinno machine in the rear cargo space. Skinny de-caf latte grande available as an option

On a lighter note, are you serious about obtaining one of those Ho? I've not ridden in one yet but have sat in it at the dealer and Wow! Me likey..

Hard to judge anything from that photo. The rover mags can't seem to say enough good things about it. Every month there is a new article talking it up.
I just read an article yesterday that said it would kick a stock defender's butt! Now that might be a stretch...
Of course I'm not sure why I even care... I'm still looking for that perfect series truck for under $5000!!

Yeah.... rover mags talking up a new rover? I wonder how many mags over the last 3 years said anything about how it was a huge mistake for LR not to include the CDL in the D2. I'm sure now that the 2003 models have the option they'll talk it up too.

If you look at Land Rover's propaganda on their site in the drivetrain section, they chat up the ETC as a better option over CDL and their classic drivetrain systems. Seems we're all just driving outdated technology with our CDL and dreams of locked diffs. If the tires are smart enough not to spin when lacking surface contact, why even articulate at all? They seem to be telling us that you really only need two tires on the ground in this new, improved four-wheel drive system - hence: the 7,000 lb. leather and burl wrapped dirtbike for seven!

The Freelander is a better truck with six inches of clearance than our Discoveries because of this revolutionary advancement in drivetrain technology! I, for one, am not quite sold. We're taking one along through Mojave, Moab and the Nevada desert on Trans-American Trek and we'll see how the [modified] Freelander holds up.

If you want to read about Land Rover's new [improved for 2003!] opinions on 4wd systems - just look here!

http://www.us.landrover.com/blank_choose.jsp?content/choose_suv/choose_4wheel.jsp~content

They completely avoid the monocoque (sp.?) body versus ladder-frame discussion though - at one moment talking of their Discovery II chassis,

"...we're so proud of our frame. It's a rugged, fully boxed and seam-welded 14-gauge steel frame with six cross members. It also includes strategic "crumple zones." This robust structure gives the Discovery Series II chassis the strength and rigidity for towing and off-road adventure..."

...and the next, chatting us up on the virtues of the monocoque-type system on the Freelander and hybrid frame on the Range Rover,

"...crawl under Freelander and examine its strong unitized construction. Check out the long chassis "rails" and substantial subframes at each end. You might even find a Land Rover engineer who would dazzle you with data - like the fact that the strength of a Freelander body was proven on a test rig that inflicted over 13,000 pound-feet of torsional force before a single degree of body twist was detected. That engineer would also certainly point out the dent-resistant polycarbonate front fenders.[!!!]"

http://www.us.landrover.com/blank_choose.jsp?content/choose_suv/choose_safe_stab.jsp~content

It looks to me like we're at a point of real transition with Land Rover from capable, simple vehicles to over-engineered, watered-down, for the masses vehicles. What good is ETC when your breakover angle is less than 2 degrees?

I think it's clear that ETC works but it also works MUCH better with the CDL. I have both on my '99 D2 but ETC alone is only good in vehicles like the Freelander that are not real off road vehicles.

And how about those polycarb fenders? I know poly carbonate can take lots of abuse but to think that your CD's are made out of the same stuff makes me chuckle. But next time you have a bad CD try braking one in half.

Picked up my truck Sat from the dealer and they had a 2003 RR (sold) on the lot. I love the looks of the rig but the price! Anyway, while looking over their D1 selection, we talked the 03 RR and the salesguide said they've sold their alotment through Oct and they want more! He said no dealer he knows of can keep them on the lot. Jeez, let's keep postively reinforcing negative behavior...

That's why they are selling.

Nope, never said their was. But funny that people are "surprised" that they sell...

recession? corporate turmoil? not to these people.. ive been selling the 03 rangies like they were candy bars. And yes, all of the buyers are of the "staus symbol" sect of the population.. but hey, to me money is money.. have you any idea what the commision is on one of those animals?? i say status symbol or no status symbol those rigs are paying my mortgage, my car payments, and anything else i need money for. hail to the 03 range!! :)

I'm not too surprised that they're selling, just that they're selling faster than they can get them in. I don't know what the alotments are per dealer, I assume it's based on market demographic and performance, but the guy I talked with hinted that he wished the Freelaucher would sell like the 03 RR.

So Gil, just what is the commission on one of those babies?

Well, the sales guide that's buying my street rod project said LR Charlotte had an allotment of 30 Rangies and has deposits for 40!

lets go gp! actually, im not sure if we are still welcome..:)
Michael.. it takes about 1/10 the effort of selling a freelander to sell a range rover. ill spend hours with somebody tryin to get them into a freelander (which usually doesnt work).. it takes maybe 10 minutes to sell a range. im backed well into September on them. I really shouldnt say what the commision is on one, as it depends on the payplan in each indivual centre, but it can be anywhere from 1000-1500. put 5 or 6 of those on the road in a month and its makes for a nice payday. especially since selling them takes 0 effort.

Interesting....makes total sense now that I think about it. Guess I just need to admit to myself that LR has hit a home run with the new RR.

Gil, how long into the sale do you mention that the engine is built by BMW? Just from talking to people at work they wouldn't mind a RR for that reason alone but wouldn't want to buy another LR because of the poor quality of the engines.

people looking at this truck already know the truck. they know its bmw from engine to switchgear.. i usually dont have to tell anybody that. honestly i dont have to say anything about the truck exceptt "the waitlist is 25 people long.. you want one? give me a deposit" done..

Wonder if it will just be a big rush of buyers this year and then nothing next year? I also want to see one of these get taken on the trails. Think any one will show up in one at MAR and take it out?
