I am heading to Sedona the weekend of September 20th. I am going to be renting some type of 4x4 to avoid having to do a stupid Jeep tour. Anyone have any advice on what to rent or what trails to take?

I saw that Hertz rents out Disco's, but that is from Phoenix. Flagstaff didn't list them explicity. Any opinions on where to rent from, what trails to hit?

Blue - you out there????

If I am recalling correctly Hertz rents rovers through its "Luxury Rental" program or some other BS with a similar name. If I am correct this means renting one from them will be expensive, also it probablly wont go over well when you bring it back after a week 4 wheeling. Just some FYI, and I could be wrong.

LOL.

Just have the weekend, not a week.

Through Hertz in Phoenix, a Rover is only $97/day. I just don't know if I can get it at Flagstaff. I would only rent one for a day.

A jeep wrangler for a day is $140 from the sedona jeep rental places.

I am only planning to spend one day at most in the rock with a vehicle. It is really not about the fun of off-roading, it is just about seeing some different areas of scenery. I would rather do it in a rover than a jeep is all.

make sure you check out schenbly hill.. i think thats what its called. im sure blue can tell you for sure. its a trail that climbs like 6000 feet up the moggollion (sp?) rim. not any serious wheeling, but the views are intense.

i used to live in flagstaff, (college) and then I was in phoenix for a year, to the best of my knowledge you can't rent a rover from flagstaff, so your best bet is phoenix, however the trails in sedona are pretty mild and all are really short, really not worth renting a 4x4, the trail to the 7 sacred pools is pretty cool, you can drive all the way to the end, (not even a mile) and then hike to some ruins, the trail up submarine rock is probably the most 'intense' and has a few good stair climbs and leads to a sink hole, the hill mentioned above is really really mild just a really crappy dirt road that a honda car can take, but the views are pretty grand.

also realize that sedona area is under whats called a red rock pass now and anytime you park on Forest Service Land you must pay a fee regardless of your activity, so if you plan to hike expect to pay a few bucks a day, not a big deal but i think its pretty stupid since 90% of the funds go to enforce the new policy.

Really the 4x4 in sedona is not that great mostly because the trails are short out and backs, my advise would be just enjoy the tourist stuff there, (you will probably see more) or maybe rent a less equiped 4x4 like a blazer or something and drive around that area exploring a few ghost towns and finding a few swimming holes. There are plenty to keep you buzy for years.

If you have a chance hit flagstaff and drive 89A thru oak creek canyon up the switch backs to the overlook, (really good rock climbing-non 4x4 type)

places to eat in sedona: the hideaway italian overlooks the creek -eat outside

in flagstaff

beaver street brew pub, awesome oatmeal stout and really good wood fried pizza, the brewers platter is my probably the best thing on the menu.

pesto's italian, nice downtown place, really nice but more on the expensive side, but worth it.

don't go to granny's closet, the food taste just like its name,

you can purchase a ghost town book at a hastings book store as well as an Arizona 4x4 trails book.

Flagstaff is pretty cool town and has some great hiking trails that you can get to even in a honda

if you only have a weekend spend the time enjoying those hiking trails and the ones in sedona- you'll have a much more enjoyable weekend and see more than trying to find any serious 4x4 that would require a rover--but thats just my advise after living there 6 years...btw i used to spend just about every weekend in sedona in the summer enjoying rock climbing and enjoying various swimming holes...

Erik,

Thanks!! Lots of great info. I have been to Sedona once before, but my wife was pregnant at the time so we were very adventuresome.

This is exactly what we were looking for. Simple drives, but good hiking/swimming. My wife and the other couple I am going with are into the 4x4 aspects of it.

good hike with the wife would probably be west fork then in oak creek, the seven sacred pools in sedona, sub rock, chicken point,

oak creek canyon would be an excellent playground during september because of all colors, wide varity of plants, slide rock state park is nice but gets packed, watch out for dirty diapers, a good swimming hole is just south of midgley bridge, park on the south side in dirt pull off and hike down, easy hike, lots of locals and you may even find some college girls to look at and plenty of beer, i've been down there and seen kegs, that was one of my reg swimming spots,

for the absolute best swimming hole with safe cliff diving/jumping take a right off the exit for sedona instead of left for sedona, i think its 265 or 275 can't remember, anyway you will travel down a dirt road for a bit and hang a left before you get to a few houses (this place is in a hiking book) anyway the place is called
wet beaver creek (great name!)..its about a 4 mile hike in from the parking lot to a some great cliffs and good views, rock is similiar to sedona sand stone but the creek you will see cotton woods and some oak, along with the reg sedona plants, plenty of flat rocks for sunbathing so bring a lunch..this by far is the best spot i found for swimming.

in flagstaff check out the lava tubes, (a cave formed by a lava flow) bring a flash light and a jacket its pre, also fatman's loop is an easy early morning hike, september would be a good time to hike the peak, good views all the way to the grand canyon from the top,

there is a great guide book for sedona/flagstaff
simply called sedona/flagstaff day hikes, again hastings..

if by chance you are stuck in phoenix for flight reasons make the drive to tempe to mill avenue. plenty of good bars and restuarants, if sushi is in your diet then go to saki's between 5 and seven, half off sushi and saki bombers (great if you about to fly), my condo is right off mill and i enjoyed saki's often...great comedy club off university and apache..david spade used to entertain there...btw he was in a frat at ASU.

god i miss Arizona if you couldn't tell...
mabye i meet you out there and bring the G wagen... ha i'll only charge half of what the pink jeeps tours charge!!!

ENJOY the SEDONA/FLAGSTAFF AREA..
i loved every second of the 6 years living there.. well phoenix wasn't that great but close enough to sedona and flagstaff.

I may be available that weekend. Better than a pink jeep tour, and no pink jeep humiliation to suffer :) I've had family that has rented D2's in Phx, but I doubt you'll find anything up in Flag/Sedona area. A stock Disco doesn't like the Broken Arrow Trail much either (the fun trail that take you to Submarine Rock). Any kind of 4X4 rental in Sedona will cost you an arm & a leg. Schnebly hill road is a cool, rocky road; I prefer to travel on it going down into Sedona from the north. I really prefer to bomb down it on a mtn bike with wife driving behind me...

The Oak Creek Canyon paved road is closed now (fire danger) between Flag & Sedona. A lot of stuff up there is closed now due to fire danger.

I'm meeting a couple Denver guys in Sedona beginning of August. I'm also firming up plans to make the Phx - Moab - Denver round trip again...most likely will happen in September. Keep me posted on your plans and maybe we can hook up.
