There are so many great pictures on this website that I assume they we taken for the most part iwth a digital camera. So, which ones do you Dwebers like? Personally I'd love to get the new Canon SLR digitals that I can use my 35mm lenses on, but just don't have $1600 to spend. I'd rather upgrade the rover!!!

Thanks,

Zak

That model, I think, is Curtis' favorite.

I use the Sony DSC75. Great camera, but middlin' software. Pictures often need to be tweaked in Photoshop.

BTW I have the fujifilm mx2700, which I've had for 3-4 years now and its still great. But fixed lens though. If I had to choose another compact, I'd go with Michael, since the sonys have great (Zeiss) lenses. The dsc85 is more recent I believe.

Nikon D100 goes for about 1600-1800.. Still more then I would pay for a camera though. I have a Nikon coolpix 885 and it is OK. The only thing that I don't like about digital cameras is that it takes to dam long to take the shot. If you are trying to take action pictures of moving objects you are going to miss them every time. It has a few seconds delay from the time you hit the button till it actually takes the picture. Also, the lack of a good zoom blows too. Most you get 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. The digital zoom really doesn't do anything for you since it blurs the pictures. The optical zoom is all that really matters. Good thing that I always carry 2 cameras with me. One digital and one normal one. Digital is good for still shots but, not much else. I would love to test out one of the high end ones though like the Nikon d100 or D1x or the Canons to see if they take pictures any faster.

Dean,

That was a price I found for a few left over D30's. I'd really like a D60, but they run around $2100+. With a baby on the way, that's way out of the question.

I've been using the Nikon CoolPix 995 (next step up from the 800 series) for about a year now and I love it. I am/was a photoshop guru by trade and 90% of the time I don't even touch any of the pics that come out of the camera (ie color correcting, removing artifacts, etc).

FWIW, the price has really come down on the 995 and it's successor the 5000 in the past few months. For the picture quality you get it's a pretty good deal IMHO...

Zak,

I also have a Sony. It's the DSC-P31 and has the 8MB memory stick. It's not the ultimate camera as far as quality of pics but one thing I was really amazed with was, we were up in Wurtsboro once for a trail ride (Actually with Dean and others) and this thing fell off my pocket and violently rolled down on a rocky hill. It survived! And it doesn't end there, a couple of hours later, I had an unfortunate "submarining" accident with my Disco that completely submerged the camera in muddy waters for over 15 minutes. (I only found out when I got pulled out) and there was the camera on the floor of my rover soaked. Well, as you can see it still works. For 200 bucks, I think it's a good buy.

We have a Nikon 990 here at work and I love it, but it eats batteries. We also have several Sony Mavicas and Kodaks, too, but when heading out I will pick up the Nikon (and extra batteries) if I can....

I'd been thinking about a 995 to go with my N70, so I'd have both a digitial and a film camera, but the wife doesn't see the need..... lol..... And, the 5000 is a bit less than the 995, too, so, I might be able to convince her that I "need" one...

I have an Olympus C-2100UZ with a 10X optical zoom

With burst mode and a 128 MB smartmedia card, I can capture some pretty good action photos.

Pretty good color and resolution for a 2.1 MP camera.

Eric the canon D60 takes 3 fps, and has a kind of immediate mode where (whatever you're doing) it will take a picture when you press the shutter down, with a time lag of less than 1/10 sec. What I read anyway. The D1 takes 8 fps up to 21 frames before a pause is necessary, but this one costs 5K.

Dean

Ps Glenn did you wash the camera under clean water? Was it really under water?

No, I DON'T have one.... work does, and I'm trying to convince the wife, lol, but I don't have one of my own..... yet! :)

I do, however, have a stack of 35mm rolls of film that I have shot and STILL have yet to take to get developed.... it's always a surprise when I see things from three or four years ago.... lol.....

It was until you pulled me out and the water drained. So I would say that's a good 5 - 10 minutes of it being under that crappy water. Nope, I didn't wash it out. I was actually thinking of discarding it the next day when to my surprise, I put new batteries and it turned on... There was however water "in" the screen for about a week. Gives a whole new meaning to the term Liquid Crystal Display, hehehe

Man, 5K for a camera?! That could be a front/rear bumper, OME LTR shocks, 2 or 3 sets of tires and rims, winch, Hella 4K's HIDs, Lockers...

Uh....

5000 is a model number... the Nikon CoolPix 5000, versus the Nikon CoolPix 995 or the 990, or.....

:)

lol....

Now, if you want to talk about $5000 for a digital camera, look for a Nikon D1..... :)

I would like to find out how to post pictures on the D-web actually...unfortunately I don't have a digital camera, but I get mine developed so they are listed on the net and accessable.

Eric, check the options on your camera. Some have a manual mode that will take 16 instant shots very quickly, exactly for action situations. Mine will take them as long as I hold the button down (Nikon CoolPix 990), one right after the next. When I let off the button, it then will store all the images and I can review them.

Sus,

There are directions over in the "Formatting" section on the left.

In short, type "\" and "image", but together, and then "{", followed by a description, then "}".

Once you hit post, and you review your post, you'll see that it has a generic "image" box. Once you click post again, then it will ask you to select the image.... hit "browse", find the image and hit okay, and it will post it if it is below the required size limit, and you're a registered user.

Ho, almost all of my pictures are of Jeeps. I never remember to give my camera to someone else to take some shots of me. So I ussaully just get pics of the folks that I go with and 80% of them drive Jeeps.. Some real nice ones at that. I'll have to check the settings on the camera it says it can do it but, I think that keeps it from focusing right. I would have to play with it and find out. Don't know. I do like the movie mode though and the fact that I can hold 609 high quality (FINE XGA 1024x768) pictures on my 256mb card.

Zak,

If you have a cache of Canon EF lenses then a D30/D60 is your best bet. All of the good little "auto" cameras are already $800-$1000. I was looking in this range and quickly realized that I had a greater investment in my three EF lenses than a good auto would cost. By adding another $1K to that price I was able to keep using these lenses.

Now lets further the thought: I have shot no more than three rolls of film in the past six months. Yet I have shot an estimated 15000 digital shots. My digis will exceed (yes - exceed) the print quality of my Canon EOS Elan 35mm. I have probably spent only $100 in ink and paper to print what I need.

In summary, the D30 or D60 are both great and will likely save you money. You will miss no shots either since the D-series is always in "shutter priority mode". There is really nothing better to bring a baby into the world with!

Now, if that is not enough argument for the "D" to convince you and your wife, email me offline and I will show you my online galleries. That should do it :)

Eric spake:

Much faster. No lag time. three frames per second. Most of the Digi SLR's shoot exactly like thier film counterparts.

Leslie, try Lithium batteries in your Nikon. My 950 will eat batteries too but while the Lithiums cost much more the will last MUCH longer. I use only Lithiums in my digi cams or my F5 SLR.

I had talked to another person using a 990, and they suggested using NiMH, that rechargables last a LOT longer.... FWIW, the office is buying the batteries, and they only buy regular alkalines, so, I carry a bag of them with me.... literally! lol....

But, when I get my own, I'm definitely going to go NiMH, if it doesn't already come with a rechargable battery (I noticed that the 995 now comes with a rechargable battery and charger, so..... if that's the one I can convince the wife that I "need", then I'll be set.....) :)

Leslie's right the 995 does come with a charger. I usually just bring the charger with me on the trail. If it starts to get low, just plug it into the inverter between obstacles or stops.

Now if you have the bucks, the D1 is THE camera to get in my opinion. Superfast capture time and a true digital SLR... The photostaff at the newspaper that I used to work at has been using them for a couple of years now (and concidentally won the Pulitzer Prize with them as well).... not cheap though by any means.

My 2¢

Nathan,

The D1 is a choice camera. However, the advantage over the D30 or D60 is more in line with the construction of the body than anything else. This is not to say that the other D's are cheap by any means, but the D1 is basically bulletproof.

When it comes right down to it, the D30/D60 provide a much more affordable alternative to achieve the same results. The D1 is actually old in comparison and was created to make the D30/D60 technology more affordable in these later years. Still - if you make your living on digi shots the D1 is hard to beat.

I'd love to get a D60 right now. I only have three EF lenses, but I really like them. Especially my 75-300. I currently have a Rebel 2000, which is an ok camera, but I really hate having to get the film developed, and see how awful my shots came out. I'm trying to learn the art, and not doing so well at it. We took a nice trip to Maine a few months ago, and almost all my shots stink, and all are out of focus, and most were not the right exposure. I'd love to be able to take a bunch of shots, download them to my laptop, and see if i need to reshoot it. I might just hold off and save for hte nice digi, D60, or if I can get a good price on a used D30.

Thanks for all the info. I also really like the Nikon and SOny camera's. A buddy of mine at work is a hige Nikon fan, and has a ton of F series. He also ahs a few Mamiya medium formats as well. He's about to fork up the cash for hte Mamiya medium format Digi/film camera. thats a sweet camera. To Rich for my blood though.

Thanks again,

Zak

Zak,

Three EF lenses are a lot of money. At least a grand...if not more. I think you are wise for considering saving for the D60. You will not be re-shooting pix with the D. The histogram and the screen in the back are mostly all you need. Plus - since you are not paying for developing, you can shoot the same shot at diferent settings to make sure you get what you want.

I will e you my gallery offline.

I use a HP c200 for taking on trips where it may get scratched, stolen, damaged, wet or whatever else. That way if I drop it (and I have) or hurt it I am not out much $$$$ and it takes great pictures, the only thing I miss is optical zoom. I actually purchased two they were so inexpensive (under $100.00) so I have an extra sitting around collecting dust (gotr it for the wife but she does not use it). I keep one in the Disco console at all times, I would not feel comfortable keeping a 900.00 + camera in there 24x7.
