has anyone had any experence with Gibbs Firearms? i have been courting the idea of a backwoods big bore rifle (the 50 cal barrett isnt really practical) and i have think the Gibbs maybe the one. they use the Enfield no.4 action with their own barrel (.45-70) and stock. they also have Enfield copies in the British .303 and the Winchester .308. anyways its something to start a debate over. those curious the addy for Gibbs is http://gibbsrifle.com/catalog.html .......

Don't know to much about the gibbs, Looks pretty nice though. I've always like Navy Arms 45-70. there was a big right up on it in a recent issue of either Guns And Ammo or Guns magazine. What are you intending on hunting with that large of a caliber?

I'm not much help with the hunting riffles, I just can't hunt anymore. just can't pull the trigger on animals. I'm starting to get into long range shooting and handguns. Now if you want a large calliber handgun, you can always go with the 480 ruger, 454 casul (sp?), 455 Lingburg (SP?) those easily have enough power for just about anything in the back woods. You won't ahve the same yardage though

I like the looks of that Gibbs conversion. Could be a fun shooter. I'm a huge Enfield fan, but have always stuck with .303 Brit. As long as they retain the accuracy of the original (not including Jungle Carbine) - you should be good. Price was pretty reasonable too.

If you want something with more caliber choices and a little "nicer" - IMO Ruger No.1 is the way to go (as long as you can live with single shot)

You can go up to .458 right from Ruger and there are plenty of custom houses that have gone with some really insane calibers in the No.1 action

i have a good varmit rifle (single shot) now in a .223 cal. i was looking for something to put in the back of the LR while i am out in the wilds camping, not to hunt but more for the bears and bad ppls. i was looking at the Marlin 1895GS in the .45-70, but i do likes a good bolt action.

Again IMO - for me it would be no choice between the Marlin and the Gibbs/Enfield conversion - Enfield all time! Especially if you were counting on it.

(assuming the conversion has been done well of course)

For protection and such, I'd go with a nice Remington Model 870 3" magnum 12ga. Not much will be able to withstand a close range shot with a nice 3" slug. If you want a really nice version of it, you can get a Wilson Combat Scattergun. Just another thought

Go with the .50 cal bigbear. If it can go threw a 3 ft. concrete wall its good for anything. gophers, bear, rhino since they chase landrovers and all.
