Hey guys, I am wonder what (if anything) you guys do to prevent someone from walking off with your winch, the one on the front of the car, not in the passenger seat (they would probablly just bring her back after an hour or so of hearing her nag). Anyway, I have a warn xd9000 mounted in an ARB and don't like the fact that some idiot with a wrench only has to undo 4 bolts to take it, especially since my car spends most of its time (days and nights) in unguarded, unlit parking lots (I am in school). Anybody have any suggestions, I am currently toying with the idea of striping the bolt head so they would at least have to have a pair of vice grips but I want to hear some more suggestions first.

Do you have access to a welder?

Carter,

You'd better get your winches and your wenches sorted out before your wench hooks you up to your winch with bad result....

weld a nut

use allen key button heads

wrap it in 3/8 high tensile chain and a lock

I have done all.

Thanks Ron, those are some good suggestions, I will probably wind up just welding one of the bolts but first I want to see what the feasibility of hiring a midget to sit in the Disco with a shotgun 24/7 is.

Well if you want to get real MacGuiver with it you could attach a ground wire to one of the bolts or any part of the winch for that matter. run this to a relay (85) run a 12v wire to 86 of the relay so the relay will always be open. run 87a to grond and 87 to a the horn. Put a flasher in between the horn wire and the relay. If sombody tries to remove your winch and the ground wire becomes disconnected then your horn will go off.

my god Ken, that is freakin great. Im actually thinking about doing it (along with some other form of theft prevention). That would also be a cool thing to do to auxilery lights.

Back in the 60's my dad used to have a magnita hooked op to his car. Ya know, one of thise things that stores current in an old model T. I'm not sure exactly how it worked but it would shock the shit out of anyone that touched it.

Ken I think I am really going to do it now, im going to have the wire connected to one of the mounting bolts so as soon as they try to undo it the car will go crazy, I also might wire it up so the headlights, flashers, inside lights, brake lights and anything else I can think of go off. Now I need to know if this is really going to work, im not real good with electrical stuff and it seems like usually a relay is activated when a circuit is completed and not broken. also, what is this "flasher" you are talking about I am assuming it is something to make the horn get power in bursts but give some specifics and where I can get one. Does anyone else have any ideas on this??? I am probablly going to weld a bolt too, but frankly this just sounds like a pant load of fun.

Yes it will work. A couple things first to make this a little better as I posted this just as idea at first and didn't think of all the varibles so here they are.
1.A flasher is just that you give it constant power and it pulses it. otherwise your horn would just be a continuos honk. You can get them anywhere any VW Bug supply house will have one for less then $5.00.

2."I'm not real good with electrical stuff and it seems like usually a relay is activated when a circuit is completed and not broken"

You are right about this but that being said; the ground being supplied by the winch is holding the relay open when you take the ground away the relay will close completing the circuit.
Now if the person stealing your winch simply put the wire back to ground it will open the relay and the horn will stop honking. So we can use another relay to get around that situations.

So there are two ways to do this:

1. If you have a factory alarm I belive it is activated by the doorpin. so if your alarm is set then you can wire it just like I put in the first post but instead of going to the horn you can omit the flasher and go straight to the doorpin. What this will do is when the winch is removed it will send ground to the doorpin the car will think the door has been opened and the alarm will go off. Even if he puts the ground cable back the alarm will still sound. (check the arcives on the polarity of the door pin as it may be pos.)If it is then just put 87a to pos. istead of neg.

OK if you dont have a factory alarm then you will need
1. 1 flasher
2. 2 relays
3. 1 on/off switch
4. 6 pack a beer.
First you will take your ground wire (from your winch) and put it on 85 of (R1) put 86 of (R1) to 12v pos. put 87a of (R1) to ground. Put 30 of (R1) to 85 and 87 of (R2)put 86 of (R2) to 12v pos. put 30 of (R2) to ground. Now the tricky part. Run another wire off of 87 of (R2) to the flasher. And put a on off switch on the ground wire that you put on 30 (R2).

What this does is once the winch is removed it will send ground to the #2 relay that relay will open and trigger the flasher and activate the horn. Buy jumping the leads at #87 and #85 this will hold the relay open forever so how to turn it off??? thats the on/off switch hide this in the cab of your rig. if the cicuit is ever activated just retun ground to the original wire the one that goes to the winch. then flip the switch.
Mabey someone proficent in visio could diagram this for you. It really isn't that difficult just hard to explain hope this post helps.

For the love of Richard Dean, please spell MacGyver correctly.
I like the shocking them idea best.

One note... might be easier to wire it to the hood pin, rather than the door pin (shorter distance and much easier to get to.) Should be real easy to cut the ground, make it loop through the winch part, then back to the hood pin to complete the ground circuit again.
