I have a 2000 4.0 Range Rover with about 14,000 on the odometer. I am wondering what the concensus is regarding use of synthetic oil in this engine. I'm hoping to keep the vehicle for many years to come (even purchased an extended service contract that includes the EAS) and would like to know what the group's opinions are regarding type and frequency of oil/oil changes. TIA, Mark |

then take synthetic oil and stick to the standard maintenance intervals (is it 6000miles for enginge oil?). The only disadvantage I can think of is the cost. A good brand synthetic oil will offer the best protection against wear one can buy (I am not a friend of all those "put 1quart of our special additive and never change oil again and still make the engine better than new" stuff). IMHO that´s it ! It depends on how cost-sensitive you are; I´ve seen a Volkswagen Rabbit/Golf with 230.000km and theengine was opened due to cambelt failure. It wasn´t been driven carefully by it´s (female) owners (no mercy for a cold engine) but had the recommended oil changes with just the oil quality the garage may have poured into it. Wear on cylinder bores and bearings was very acceptable. From that time I switched to semi-synthetic oil (considering that as a good quality-cost compromise) and changed it 1000km before schedule. Changing a synthetic at the recommended interval that might still have potential for another 1000km could be seen as waste, but the engine couldn´t be happier. |
