Just thought I'd mention that if anyone goes to see K-19, you'll see Halifax and our harbour. I know, BFD, but it's kinda cool to see my town in a big movie. The shipyard etc are all here, all the navy ships shown (except the subs) are Canadian Navy. The cemetary at the end of the movie is also in downtown Halifax. It's actually pretty funny if you look into the background when the sub first leaves port, you can see modern cars driving (it's supposed to be 1961) and a big yellow city dumptruck/snowplow. You also just catch a glimpse of one of the skyscrapers downtown.

Anyway, it's a good movie, made even better by its location ;-)
It's actually a pretty disturbing story.

i did not know canadain navy had anything bigger than a canoe....hehehehe, sorry Niall had to do that, actually while on active duty the ships i was assigned to worked with several from the canadain nav, good ships and sailors (both sexes as i recall). i am looking forward to seeing that movie as well.

It's the canoes ou have to worry about. Birchbark has come along way you know. Let's just say your lucky we're not paddling at you ;-)

Actually, my understanding is that our navy is quite sophisticated and accomplished. It's a lot smaller than yours of course, but we also only have ~30 million people up here.

How about those nifty used Diesel subs Canada picked up for a steal from the British Navy? :)

sorry for the delay, yes niall my experence with the navy of the north was pleasant. the sailors and officers onboard did a great job, other than the brits the canadain navy showed its effectiveness during the few contact we had with them.

Yeah Garrett, the Granite Brewery is still here. Also, Maritime Brewing Company (now owned by Sleemans), Propeller Brewery, Garrison Brewery, and of course Olands. Moosehead moved to New Brunswick a few years ago.

You're brother's spot must be nice. The south shore is great, if a little pricey. Especially within the "magic hour" of Halifax.
