It's been shown through scientific study that human performance in many situations improves with audible stimulation i.e., music. The question I have pondered for some time is what music? Now I'm not talking about casual wheeling, I'm talking adrenalin pumping potential body damage offroading where a performance enhancer would be helpful. Because all of my old Led Zeppelin is in vinyl and I have yet to put a turntable in my Disco, I have settled (quite happily) on Dick Dale the king of the surf guitar. But my formative years for music were the late sixties and seventies and it occurred to me that some of you might choose Mozart or Smash Mouth. The question here is what music is working for you if the above makes any sense, if you're off road much I'm sure it does.

i kind of like delerium in this role. 35MPH and more on dicey, wheel sucking forest service roads that have been hammered to shit. works great for keeping the adrenaline up! don't laugh unless you've seen these roads. they're maybe one step down from "trail". otherwise, it's on with the Listz, and i've really been digging on Saint Saen's Opus 3 for the drive out to mtn. biking destinations. Dance Macabre is a real gem.

cruising around town generally gets either Ivy, or Supreme Beings of Leisure. . . . and throw another vote in there for Sade for the ride home.

cheers

Well, if the trail is that hard I don't listen to any music because it's too distracting. Between modulating the accelator, steering wheel, brake, winch remote, watching the trail, the wheels, and my spotter, and listening for loss of clearance and other grinding, the last thing I want is loud music in my ears.

I'm with John regarding no music on the trail (hehehe, for me this would include fire roads ) ...

However, (Garrett :)) for something impressive, and to really turn on the heat, get your mojo going, etc. , I would recommend something like "Tony Orlando's Greatest Hits" or some bad ass Englebert Humperdinck, and pump up the volume baby!!

Headin for the hills today, think I'll do that, hee hee

james, i got the dead coverd here, it just isn't that good of wheelin' music, you need to listen to appreciate.

i'll take that helter skelter off the anthology version,.,, i think it blows away the original.

now who got some bluegrass? just me i guess.

as for some good ol bluegrass....hmmm. have that Brother where art thou CD and dig it.
and kim.....i would not expect anything less than Tony from you. but then again i think your John Tesh and Michael Bolton CD's come out once in a while when you are feeling rather crazy.

When it gets serious, the only thing I want to hear is the wife telling me "Breathe dammit or neither of us will make it through this one"!

For the rest of the time, I have a compilation of drums/space over about five or ten years of taping that is all one needs for 'wheeling, if it isn't too serious. And, yes, I really did buy a DAT deck just so I could record space without having to endure the silence when the tape had to be flipped. Maybe the Apocalypse Now soundtrack would be good off-road I'll have to try it. Although, I'm not too fond of Mickey Hart anymore, after having been in his company and having him ignore everybody around him. Vince Welnick was much more friendly and kinda made up for Mickey's nastiness.

Long live Jerry!

I've been there with the Apocalypse Now soundtrack...its a bit unnerving but in the end highly enjoyable! I just keep expecting to see Huey's come roaring over the treetops....
Just a quick story,
when I first bought my disco (from a sleazy used car dealer) he had told me that there was no CD changer in the car. I never thought to argue with him or even looked. I was up in the mountains pushing through a little fire road (they were used a bit more in Montana!) and my friend was messing with the radio...just as we were cresting the top of a rather interesting hill he hit the CD player button and the previous owners Hallelujah chorus (Handel) began to ring out! Not only did the car salesman not know about the CD Player in the truck, the previous owner had it reposessed and they left the CD's in the player!! Good Deal!

Metallica : FUEL
wow, I think that I drive faster anywhere when that thing is on....including the golf cart.

hmmmm, lately (as in last few weeks) it's been the soundtrack from "Five Summer Stories", Red Hot Chili Peppers (I know, yabba dabba doo now, LOL) "Shotgun" by Junior Walker & The Allstars, The Stones, The Dead, and yes, also good ole Bob. I like good Bluegrass too when I'm in the mood. Hey GP, Im also a Jayhawks fan. :)

Rob,
all my bluegrass shit is still on vinyl. some day transfer it over to an easier medium to listen. besides, y'all know that after you have all 25 of Dick's picks plus all the actual Dead released stuff, the songs are engrained into the brain - you just need the music to start process.

Hey, Mike. I like Dick Dale, too. But, I also appreciate Issac's comment on Franz Liszt. There are some great classical "tunes" out there that make good trail music. My favorite is "Finlandia" by John Sebelius. Try it sometime. You might just want to stop along the trail to listen. Very good stuff.

Paul T. Schram (Paulschram)

Dick's Picks-eh? Many of the tapes I recorded from the audience sound better than the stuff the band released. Granted, some of my tapes are pretty brutal, but most of them (that I haven't lost:-) are pretty good. I remember a show in Chicago where Healey must have been pretty whacked out because if you didn't know the songs, there would have been no way to have known what the hell they were playing.

And, as for having it engrained in one's brain from listening to the recordings, it was so much more enjoyable to have learned the music by having seen it live. After 69 shows, one knows the music!

Rob, not sure as I haven't looked at any of them since returning from Tokyo. All are still packed away in these cool metal lined tea boxes. just got the turntable redone by the folks with WQED in Pitts so one of these days will hook it up and see what we got in my vault.

haha you guys!! Your off roading must be pretty lame, perhaps a quiet drive down the local tracks?? ;-) My cd player goes to hell and back if i even try to play a cd whilst off roading the disco. Its not a crap one either as it has a 5 second buffer. Perhaps an mp3 player with hard drive is needed. The good ole wireless with whatever is playing has to do me.... :-(

Have to agree, when I'm tying to concentrate, the last thing I need is anything extra hitting my ears/nervous system. But, to clarify, y'all know I'm not much of an off-roader....yet ; )

Nick Drake makes me want to kill myself, and I have a lovely (VERY slightly used!) CD of his for anyone who wants to send me their snail mail addy. Funny, I thought of "Ride of the Valkyries", too, for any brutish moment, like trashing your truck with too much adrenalin :) Issac, did Angelo Badalamenti do the music for "The Mission", and a couple of other films? That particular soundtrack means a lot to me. Lately I've been revisiting "The Cure". My sub-woofer is getting a work out. Sade is always a fav of mine for mindless ear candy. For getting lead-footed in the truck there's nothing like Johnny Clegg and Savuka, right Enoch? I've even been catching up on pop music lately, which I think is improving. Been logging lots of radio time lately, which is not the usual for me. Loads of good tunes out there, old and new, and life is too short to get it all in.

Karen, looking forward to all my future lives! :)

i have never skipped my MiniDisk player & i rock steady.

yeah i don't listen to tunes while trying to concentrate on the trail. that and it just ain't good manners. music helps drown out any 'bad' noises the truck got from the daily activities on the trail for the drive home.

im in alabama, and all we listen to is lynyrd skynyrd, .38 special and all that when we are heading back from the trails and feeling all good. before and during the trails, its all string cheese incident, moe, kellar williams, a little bit of widespread panic, and all that good stuff. we do have one song we call the celebration song, we play that one whenever we do something really stupid and make it out without breaking anything. its a cover of some rap guy's song gin and juice. a band did it before a phish show once, its a mandolin, banjo, and a couple other instruments, its some good stuff.

There's nothing like a little "Pinkus Floydus" to set the mood. Especially if you're driving the highway at night with the sunroof open.

Gotta add some of my favorites here. However, when the going gets tough, the stereo is off.

Another vote for "The Ride of the Valkyres"
"Born to be wild" by Steppenwolf
"Born to run" By "The Boss"
"Eye of the Hurricane" By David Wilcox (VERY sad)
Most early Pink Floyd
Dick Dale always gets my vote.
"Appalachian Spring" and "Billy the Kid" by Aaron Copland.
"Stop Making Sense" by Talking Heads
"Joshua Tree" by U-2
"Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straights
"Orange Blossom Special" by Seatrain
"Fire On The Mountain" by The Marshall Tucker Band

If you want to stay awake at night, laughing your ass off, try "The best of KFAT" if you can find it (94.5 fm, Gilroy, CA 70's and 80's...anyone remember that station?). They played stuff that Dr. Demento wouldn't play, like:
"Constipation Blues" by Screamin Jay Hawkins
"Merchant's Lunch" by the Red Clay Ramblers
"Fifteen Days Under the Hood" By N.R.P.S.
"Ol'Ben Lucas" by Kinky Friedman.

As you can see, I'm an old fart, but I would appreciate any suggestions of recent music that suits my taste.

Rich "saving up for an iPod" Lee

PS. Any suggestions on a cheap digital Camera?
I'm looking for at least 2 megapixels, but less than $300. And I need it to be pretty sturdy and compact.

Thanks.

Rich,

I just bought a 2.0 MP Canon PowerShot A40 for just under $300 at OfficeMax a couple of days ago. They are running a special right now where they not only had the camera on sale but threw in a free 64MB memory card.

What little I've used it, I really like. For such a small camera, it has a really nice 7.5x zoom which is the reason I went with it.

Figfry,

Yeah, it's definately a pump up. It's a shame, dosn't seem like any one is buying "Vapor Trails".

Incidentally all...overseas here it seems that they released a limited "Pink Floyd" edition VW Golf. It has some really rad upholstry boasting the bands name as well as outside detailing, upgraded sound system, and a few other things. I think they are about 5 years old.

Cheers,

Kennith

The Dead covered "Fire..", but it is a MTB classic...

Actually, I was joking. MTB has a different song by the same name.

The Dead's version, I believe, is an original, not a cover. Since I have never heard the MTB version, I cannot determine if they are as different musically as they are lyrically.

MTB's lyrics:

Took my fam'ly away from our Carolina home
Had dreams about the west and started to roam
Six long months on a dust covered trail
They say heaven's at the end
But so far it's been hell

And there's fire on the mountain
Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there

We were digging and shifting from five to five
Selling ev'rything we found just to stay alive
Gold flowed free like the whiskey in the bars
Sinning was the big thin Lord
And satan was the star

And there's fire on the mountain
Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there

Dance hall girls were the evening treat
Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street
Men were shot down for the sake of fun
Or just to hear the noise of their 44 guns

And there's fire on the mountain
Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there

Now my widow, she weeps by my grave
Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save
Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame
All for a useless and no good worthless claim

And there's fire on the mountain
Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there

The Dead's lyrics:

Long distance runner, what you standin' there for?
Get up, get out, get out of the door
Your playin' cold music on the barroom floor
Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core.
There's a dragon with matches that's loose on the town
Takes a whole pail of water just to cool him down.

Fire! Fire on the mountain!

Almost ablaze still you don't feel the heat
It takes all you got just to stay on the beat.
You say it's a livin', we all gotta eat
But you're here alone, there's no one to compete.
If Mercy's a bus'ness, I wish it for you
More than just ashes when your dreams come true.

Fire! Fire on the mountain!

Long distance runner, what you holdin' out for?
Caught in slow motion in a dash for the door.
The flame from your stage has now spread to the floor
You gave all you had. Why you wanna give more?
The more that you give, the more it will take
To the thin line beyond which you really can't fake.

Fire! Fire on the mountain!

Radiohead is good. Not knocking it. Floyd is just timeless, always good.

Hey Kennith, Vapor Trails is a really good CD. The heavier edge sound reminds me of the 2112 days.

Dee,

DSOM would be my pick. "Wish You Were Here" is a strong 2nd. Damn moody.

Leslie,

DSOM is standard equipment.
