Went out for lunch, and when I was returning to my vehicle, a Suburban parked next to me. I got in and rolled down my windows (humidity has finally broken here in NC!) and was putting on my seatbelt, when an attractive middle-aged woman got out of the passenger side of hte Suburban and approached me and started asking about Winston.

"Did you put those tires on yourself?", she asked? "Yes" I replied. "Was it hard?", she asked. I replied "No, but I did have to raise it alot for them to fit". "I have the same Land Rover, but it has a thing on the front and a thing on top (as she pointed to the roof), but I don't have tires like this" she said. "Did it cost alot of money to raise it", she asked. "Well, I said. It can be expensive, but I did most of the work myself, so that saved me alot". She asked about how it rode, etc. But the kicker was in her final statement. "Well, I really like the tires and would like to do that to mine. It makes it look VERY cute".

I couldn't find any words to respond with, and she walked off. I've done a lot of work to Winston, but I just don't think "cute" was the look I was after.

I hate cute. Women call my track car cute. I can't stand it.

It's a lowered '68 BMW 2002 with a gutted interior, full cage, race buckets, plexiglass windows, and no paint (rattle can primer).

It ain't cute. It's Fugly.

I took a look at your truck Greg. Looks great! I like what you've done with the exhaust routing.

Hey Man,

Did you take a picture of this attractive lady?

"Excuse Me, Do you mind if I take your picture and post it on the internet?"

Yes, Greg. Very cute Winston. Even the name would make it cutesy!!! HAHAHAHA, no, I would call a Mini Cooper or VW Bug cute. Not a lifted, BAD ASS Rover.

But, it could be sexy...

greg - you obviously aren't much of a ladies man ROFTL that could have turned into a great discussion over martinis and a small plate of "granchiolino" . . . you have to buy into the snob thing at least a little bit to drive a rover. I mean, if you don't - why not just get a jeep??

Dam Greg all that hard work on your bumper and all she came up with is "Cute", My wife thinks mine is UGLY with the lift and tires and all the other crap thown on. It does need a bumper & winch to really make her hate it. The up side she wont drive it anymore. It used to be the Family waggon...

Cute...hehehe...I heard that once when I was at a trailhead about to go MTBing. "Cute" she said. It ruined my whole day. LOL.

Paul, actually, I hade my digital camera, but, like Eric said, I don't think my wife would appreciate that. Send me some of your cards and the next time I can say "Hey, if you think my truck is cute, wait 'til you see this guys"!

Todd, thanks for the compliment. At least that ain't cute!

Sus, see, that's what I'm after. Sexy I like, cute, I don't.

Isaac, I am a ladie's man. Just a married ladie's man.

Dee, my wife refuses to drive Winston anymore. Of course, she accuses me of "ruining" it on purpose just so she wouldn't want to. How dare her!

Well, one of you guys with money and some mechanical skills are welcome to "ruin" my Disco whenever you want! I just don't have the money, time or knowledge to modify mine! I'm afraid to look like a soccer mom while driving mine b/c it's totally stock! :)

I dunno Greg, I think I'd take cute. A car is supposed reflect its owner.

I remember a gentleman told me one time that my new (at the time) front bumper made my truck "menacing", like ME. DAMN! I don't want to be menacing!

Sus - you just need a few scratches and some mud slopped up on the hood. That will eliminate any confusion to would-be naysayers.

Greg - failed to see the wife comment earlier . . . you have guts! I would have popped off something really embarrasing, like . . .

"Did it cost alot of money to raise it"

"well, in your case sweety - a beer is only $4.25, and we can be at full mast there afterwards"

oh my.

Shame, shame, Isaac.

Sus, if you were closer I'd have your rig ruined in an afternoon. I've got a complete OME HD lift sitting in my garage with your name on it! Well, not really. Been trying to sell it for a friend. But it could be had for cheap.

I'm sure you could get some local D-Webbers to install it for you. hehe

LOL Greg. I had a "Mammy" in a D2 come up to me at school and ask if I would sell my truck to her. I said it would be a lot of money, she said something like 1000 bucks? I told her thats how much my winch cost and I would never sell my rig (except for 500000 and over). She then went on about how she wanted to get a series rover for her boy and said she was looking for a 73 since it had an auto transmission. I told her there were no automatic series rovers that came from the shop with an auto in it. I also told her that her kid needed to learn how to drive stick and how to fix the truck himself. She then wanted to know if she could hire me to fix the truck for them. I replied no.

So, its not you that is messed up, its the rest of Charlotte that is screwy.

Greg and Max, great stories, but I'm with Isaac . . . the ladies were obviously picking up on you. Even being married, you should have at least stepped out of the vehicle to show off your mods, especially the ones underneath--that would have been a respectful gesture :)

Good one, Kyle. Funny thing is, she never even saw the front because of how we were parked. I guess she didn't realize anything was there since there weren't any "cute" bars wrapped aroung the front. Now she could have REALLY related to your setup.

Sus - that's TOO funny LOL Don't be worried . . . my, uhh, "ship" isn't open to new reservations, not for about 9 years now ;)

Now - Moe's idea of stepping out to show off your quads . . . errr, I mean your MODS sounded like a much more appropriate course of action!!

Women are always talking about how they like to hear and know that they're still attractive, and still "got it". Not us guys tho - we're obviously content with beer guts, our 301 piece tool set, and our trucks - we don't need any flirting or reaffirmation of our manliness. After all, that's why we drive "bad ass" rovers that serve as an outward example of our own ingenuity, stateliness, and virility to the opposite sex

btw - what ever happened to "boss"??! For the record, Gatsby shall be referred to as "functionally and aesthetically excellent".

cheers

The cute syndrome is definately the worst, I remember towing a horse trailer over a pass in Montana in the rain and then turning onto a dirt road so that my truck achieved that perfect amount of "cool dusty africa" look and as I pulled up to the cabin my friends wife replied that she thought the headlights looked like little eyes and it was cute driving up the hill....whatever. I also understand the frustration with all of the other Charlotte NC drivers on this site, I keep on driving up next to these fantastic vehicles, Defenders, Disco's and DII's at stoplights expecting to see someone who would truly appreciate them, instead I'm greeted by some teeny bopper music and a high schooler driving. I'm sure they appreciate it, but if that truck never sees even a dirt road i wouldn't be surprised. I'm not surprised that you had the sale conversation Max. I'm also impressed you didn't just punch the lady when she offered you 1000$. Clearly you should have held out for my offer!
drop me a line if anyone here in Charlotte wants to head to the hills, I would really like to get into a group and head out

Justin,

Check out http://www.carolinarovers.org/ and go to the bottom. There will be a link to a BBS. There are many rovers in Charlotte and most of us are wanting to go wheelin'.

Don't worry, new one is on the way. DRTY THTS will be placed on the garage wall.

THE VIN NUMBER!!!! duh!

Greg Davis

I couldn't get her VIN. She was riding in a Suburban. A 2WD Suburban at that!

Hmm. I think it was 2WD. You know, it's a damn shame when you can't even tell if a rig is 2WD or 4WD by looking at it. Just a shame!
