I'm a Disco owner myself, but I have a friend with a Range Rover problem...

He has a 91 RR that he bought last fall. Recently it has had a problem where it stays in 1st gear for a very long time (several minutes of driving) when he first starts off in the morning. He is forced to follow a back-road path for a while until it finally starts shifting correctly. After that I do not believe he has further problems that day.

He has checked fluid levels and has not mentioned any other symptoms. I will be pointing him at this conversation so he will be able to answer any follow-up questions, but if anyone has any ideas or suggestions in the mean time, please post!!!

Flush transmission, change filter and look for bits/ pieces - flushing can fix lots of transmision issues.
Maybe it has no thermostat and engine is running cold longer than normal causing a cold / slow shift, closed loop ecu mode rich start mix, until he warms it on the backroads ?

try starting it up and letting it sit for a while to warm up, then drive off. Does it shift normally then?

Two great troubleshooting tips so far...thanx much!! I'll pass these on to him to try. If anyone else thinks of something, keep 'em coming.

If he's doing the trans fluid himself, then he ought to do it twice one week apart. This way he can be sure to get the fluid out of the torque converter too. The second time he won't need to drop the pan.

Kickdown cable. Mine went bad and showed the symptoms you mentioned.
