Moved to Charlottesville last week from CO and am looking for disco folks to hit the trails with and am looking for a good shop in town. Any help?

Thanks,
James

well, i'm in Lynchburg about an 1/1.25 hours away. i know that doesn't help too much, but it's a start. :) i don't know about trails in the area, i've only been in the area for a year (in which my Jeep has not been trailworthy) and only had the disco for 7 months.

James:
Service center, Mike, down on mainstreet across from AmTrak, will do a great job if you need repairs/work that you can't do yourself. I live out west (of the airport) about 15 miles and there's some decent runs over west of Harrisonburg (hwy 33) that are easy and quick to get to and usually we get a pretty good group together.

Also, there are some trails down south around the Roanoke area that we're planning to hit in a few weeks or so, keep an eye on the "events" section.

Damn, we should get have a beer down at the Continental Divide sometime.

James-
Give me an email sometime. Are you the person I sold the halfshaft to? I wheel a good bit around the area.

PS-

Michael Javor runs the Service Center. Rover trained. 923-0964. Honest, somtimes a little slow, but he works by himself and stays pretty busy. He has worked on various rovers for me. LandRover Richmond can get parts to you here overnight.
There are a few secret trails right here in town I've been promising to take Mike Noe to... Although he may have found them by now! We should all three go sometime. How is your truck set up?
The trails around Harrisonburg Mike mentioned are fun, and there a few decent trails south of town, shoe creek, bald mtn jeep trail, etc.
I'd be interested in a trip to Potts Mtn. sometime, Mike.

Yes, I did buy your half shaft Enoch. I have a 95 disco with ARB bull bar, IPF lights, 90w/145w bulbs with wiring loom for the headlight, ARB snorkel, ARB air lockers, rovertym 2inch lift with rear links, GCR wheels and 265/75 gy MTR, and a bunch of leaks and dents. I went to JMU so I know the trails out off of 33 and my girlfriend has a monster FJ60 and knows a ton of trails up north of C'Ville. Keep me informed, I'll always be ready to go.

Sweet! My fiance has a 60 as well. Not a monster, yet. I'll keep you posted. A ton of trails north of town?

North of Cville ? Are you talking about the Hoover Camp area. Some Madison county natives have been telling me that I need to check out that area. I should have my Rovertym sliders sometime soon to further protect my truck on those trails. Hopefully I can put them on without much trouble.... or I might get Mike to put the on.

I've had a lot of good experiences with Mike(Javor) at the "Service Center". Look for Mel's Diner on west main. Mike has a small 2 bay garage behind the diner. There seems to be some contention about the limited parking for the diner but Mike has a high chainlink-fenced area further back that has a lot of room to park. You need to call ahead and make sure he will be there... but sometimes you can just drop by ... especially if is an emergency. He seems to be very busy these days and he doesn't have any help. He installed my OME HD springs and shocks and my AB diff guards.... Mike also fixed a water "seal" leak, and did the 60K service. He also checked out my '97 D1 before I bought it, told me what it needed.... so I had him do the work. He even arranged to have a new windshield (with gaskets) installed for just over $300.
So far, I'm very pleased with his work. He can be a bit abrupt but he seems "honest".

The trails that I hear are good are out by Madison. I've been on some North of Harrisonburg that aren't bad. My girlfriend's folks have been in the area for 20+ years and do as much off roading as possible. They have an arsenal of Fj 60/62 and fj 40's. They have used GPS to map everthing so I'll steal the sacred maps from them. They helped open 4X4 connection if you've heard of that shop. I look forward to meeting you all and hitting the trails if my rig stays in one piece. I'm always ready for a beer at the Divide!

I'm in to the cruiser crowd as well, and own a 60 now. Had a 40 in the past. Fiance has a 60, also. What is your girlfriend's family name? I know the guys at LCC. (now 4x4 Connection). Several of the guys I wheel with on a regular basis have cruisers and are into that scene.
Look forward to seeing you. Send me a phone number and I'll call you sometime.

E:
Naw, I haven't found those secret places around here yet. I have been over to that "Big LEvels" trail outside of Stuarts Draft, but's it's pretty tame, though a decent place for testing stuff out.
Show me those secrets around here, I can usually break away about anytime.

Enoch,
Our trucks must look the same because I had someone ask me yesterday if my truck belonged to you! I was at the Alltel store next to the mall. I'm getting a phone installed in our new house this week, so when I get a number, I'll give you all a call. Tom O'Neill and James Asti are the one up at 4X4 connection. Tom is James' lawyer and my girlfriend's father.
Look forward to getting out,
James

Ya, Big Levels wasn't much. Either was Shoe Creek. Went down quite a few side trails that led to dead ends or gates off of those trails as well. There was one small hill climb that had some rocks in it that was a little fun though.

Eric:
I don't know Shoe Creek, is it close by?

My G/F and I went to Big Levels Sunday afternoon, it was her first ever "off-road" experience in the D2 (other than ridin around with me here in the woods) and I let her do the driving. Other than a little heavy on the go-pedal and uncertainty of the line sometimes, she did well and couldn't believe how "easy" it was (her words). Good place for a beginner.

Crabtree Falls/Shoe Creek is near Big Levels. It's off of RT 827 if that helps you at all. I have only been there once and don't know the area very well.

Is there any trail that is tuff around here!?! Any good water crossings? Mud?

You could run the state line trail in the rain. That should be interesting to see how many trees you hit. I hear it is mostly off-camber side slope all the way up the moutain. It's also a long drop on the other side of the trees to add to that fear factor. Paragon and Big Dogs/The Cove have some hard trails. Can't help you on the water crossings and mud though.

I've got a nasty water/mud crossing in my back yard! hehe.

Oooops!

Eric:
Where are these others you mention?
State Line
Paragon
Big Dogs/The Cove (Roanoke?)

also known as Tuscarora Trail. Never been there myself, but just found a good site with a bunch of trail links for the VA area:

Mike-
Did you go straight up big levels or zig zag?
That is a fun trail in the snow.
Email me off line sometime and we'll hit some local stuff. When it actually rains there's PLENTY of mud there.
James-
What color is your truck?

We need to all three get together sometime. I could be up for a few hours of local wheeling this weekend. You guys around on Sunday? I've got my real tires on...

We went straight up, pretty damn rocky in spots, I probably should've aired down. There were a coupla spots where I should've locked the CDL first, but oh well. Man, I didn't even consider snow, I could see how that would be fun.

I'm going down to Brookneal/Gretna this weekend, there's a chance I'll be back Sun around noon.

Call me Sunday. My cell # is 960-7940. I'll be working on an M416 trailer I'm restoring, but would be glad to break away for an hour or two to wheel.
