Well, after a 15 hour round trip drive from Philly to Killington, the weekend went like this:

1) One sunset trail ride (Green Lane Style and great mountain top views)
2) Two regular trail rides (level 2)
3) Lots of good food and beer (mmmmmmmmm lager)
4) Put some faces with some names (met lots of really nice people.)
5) Lot's of genuine fun

Suggestions for next year:

1) Make the classes and learning experiences at different times than the trail rides
2) Make sure everyone on the staff is aware of the information given out to the public
3) Put a sign up or have someone direct people to the appropriate line up for trail rides. It was difficult to determine which line to get into.
4) If your going to post a list of required items for a event, at least check to see that I brought them. I sort of felt like a kid that didn't get carded on my 21st birthday. Some of us went to some effort and cost to buy the things on the list of required items.
5) HAVE FUN WITH YOUR EVENT AND RELAX.

Over all, I'm glad I made the 15 hour drive. I had a great weekend. Just my thoughts on the trip and hopefully the suggestions will be of some constructive use to the staff if they host again next year.

Thank you "Greg Hren" for the CDL advice and trail ride.
Warren, what's up Dude.
George S. - Awesome DII. You will have to send me a parts list for that West Marine CDL system you've got.

paul. how could you forget the little night run on the trials course!! that has to be in there.
don't think the local campers next to the course enjoyed it, but we did. haha.

Well Garrett,

I didn't want to hurt any egos of those folks who ran the course during daylight and hit those canes. I didn't see a single Disco hit a cane that evening. However, those folks in the rangies that ran that course a couple of hours after us decided to eliminate them all together.

Greg P and Paul, 'twas nice to meet you guys. Garrett, I guess you're off on a trail run when I stopped by and said hello. We were in a different campsite with the NY/NJ group. (George, John C, John R, Frank, Norm, Adrian and Manuel). There were also quite a few number of rovers (series and D90s) in our area.

The biggest dissapointment was when our group signed up for a level 3 trail and when we got there, there were a bunch of people that prevented us from doing the trails. They said they were friends with the owners of the land and they will call the cops if we proceeded. THAT SUCKED. Although they took us to another trail, (which was cool) but I thought they should've organized it better than that.

Other than being stung by six bees simultaneously and missing on some scheduled runs from waking up too late, we had fun. Again, it was nice meeting people!

I was so happy I scored a perfect 10 on the trials trail until I found out that was the lowest... DUH!

well today i will find out what is causing my rear driveshaft to vibe lots now. can only imagine it is my rotoflex. time to get a real driveshaft with a freaking U joint. 7 hours in the truck drove me nuts when i could not go over 65 mph. oh well. got better mileage at least.
all else went well. yeah sorry i did bump into ya Glenn. guess i was out on the trail or getting sexual harrassed by Evan. lol. :)

BTW, Norman (Blue D2) kicked everyone's ass in the trials course. He had the cheapest mod in his truck(30 dollar home depot lift) and he did the trials smoothly with no issues whatsoever. He scored a "0". Congrats Norman!

It was nice to meet you too Glenn. I'm not sure what I scored on the trials course because I only ran it sometime around midnight on Saturday night, I think, and I was feeling very good by that point. I do remember a few bumps here and there, but I'm not sure about the canes. I think I might have only hit one slightly with the front bumper.

I did drag my ass in that big gully around the 4th set of canes. phew, and what a climb that was to get back up it. I bumped something under the passenger seat on the break over, but never could find a mark or any damage.

Oh well, I had fun too. I'm also curious about the $30 Home Depot lift deal........ what's the scoop on that?

I think Dr. George formulated that lift... If I'm not mistaken, it's a piece of steel box (like the ones for the receiver hitch) cut and drilled and slipped under the springs. They act like spacers almost.

-glenn
Oopppss, I hope that's not classified information. If you guys don't see me post here anymore, send a search team to look for me along the riverbanks of NY/NJ.

So much to talk about...although I was a bit heated at the event I will try to be as impartial as possible in this string.

1)Linda and her husband were very nice to us despite the attitudes we caught from some of the other staff members (not ALL- SOME)
2)The area is absolutely beautiful and I appreciate it as much as the local tree huggers who, despite their extensive education and uptight attitude, cannot process the words "public use" (see aforementioned trails comment)
3)That damn trials course was more fun in reverse than in forward. Sorry to those we disturbed while driving on it at midnight- Garrett and his Hella Waker Uppers helped out...
4)I don't get the follwing actual trail rating system used this weekend 1,2,2+,3,3+,3++,3+++
5)Kyle you were right about long lines. Best way to beat them is to be in front and hope the group splits in half.
6)I was told at registration time the trails were available by "guided" rides only. That turned out not to be true but was not made public.
7)I don't think it unrealistic to expect that if there are only (3) opportunities to ride on the trails that the groups depart on time. We were the first group to leave in both rides Saturday (trail guides thank you for taking the time to lead and spot, it is appreciated) and the first ride was 20 minutes late to depart the second ride was 45 minutes late.
5)Thank you sponsors (especially those who showed up)...without whom many events would have little or no corporate support.
6)Thank you Killington Resort. You managed to secure the highest price possible for a facility that would have otherwise gone unused this past weekend.
7)Thank you to those who busted their butts to try their best to make up for those who really didn't care much about the people participating. Customer satisfaction is paramount in today's society and it was evident who did and did not care.
8)The Washington Mtn expedition video was cool. Please post the follow up videos planned in the future.

I would really like to start some dialog with members of the VTXS to gain an understanding of what went wrong/right and what if anything will be done to ensure a better event next year. Sorry to hear that the club will take a loss but at $55 (registration) I think I paid more than my fair share to participate. Once again thank you to those trail guides and staff members who worked hard to make this happen.

good points there JJ. yeah i was very happy with our 'guide' on saturday. he worked his ass off moving bolders and attempting to get about 15+ trucks down (and up) the trail. he took the time to explain some basic wheeling terms to those who would have never known or dared to ask.
could not have asked for better weather or location.
why the hell did i move?

I would like to see a copy of the handy dandy video that was being made to "give to the environmentalists". If the club were really thinking, why not sell the copies to participants for a few bucks to put towards their loss.

Well said Jason,

I hope the event operators go to the MAR or next years Uwharrie to see how fun these things can be, and then incorporate that festive spirit into another attempt. There is always good with the bad, i.e.; this weekend the trails were good, certain peoples attitudes were bad.

Speaking of videos:

The OEX video of the Mt. Washington Trip was pretty cool. A pucker factor of 10 would be happening if I were on 12 feet of ice packed snow in 100 mph winds! I can't remember the guys name, but he took the time to answer questions and conversate with anyone that stopped by. A real nice fellow.

Oh well, enough of this crap. It's time to start planning for the MAR.

The trails on the Killington property is only open during the event. You will be trespassing if you try to run any of the ski slopes on your own. Same goes for the other trails in that area, their legal status is somewhat questionable, as Glenn found out on his trail ride.

gp (Garrett)
Posted on Tuesday, August 13, 2002 - 09:36 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

yeah most of the trails that we ran were not at Killington. most or many were off route 100/100a to the east of Killington.

Dave, I've got track plots of:

Sunset run on Killington & 5 corners trail & Buffalo Brook trail

If they are still in the GPS. The ole 176c plots the hell out of everything you drive over, but it is limited to like 5k of them and I'm not sure what is still in it after the drive home. I'll check it sometime in the next day or two to see what I may be able to pull out of it.

Buffalo Road or whatever it was called was entered at the lake park, aka Public Access. There were people out there on Bikes, Motorcycles, and people fishing.

But who really knows. I am sure some tree nazi will call you in to the local's for something.

I can't figure out the "questionable legal status" of the trails. They were clearly marked as public use. Some did have snowmobile signs on them but nonetheless they were all identified with state signs and to think that locals have the power to intimidate people off of public trails seems so rediculous to me. Hell, we have a hard enough time finding LEGAL trails to ride on without the Greenpeace crowd throwing their bodies in front of trailheads. Funny thing is that we saw one of the "environmentalists" on the way home...stickers all over the back of her v8 powered Toyota Land Cruiser. I'll bet she wipes her ass with unrecycled paper too!

killington is a little more lively and fun in the winter months. the pickel barrel is a fun place on a friday night. if you can get in that is.

We enjoyed the event. The 'Road to Stoney Creek' (2+) was a blast! Thanks to Dennis and Dave we all got through the gulley, and most made it through without too much damage (that you could see). The 'fun/mud loop' into the logging section involved a fair bit of recovery techniques, especially of the Toyota Land Bruiser with the stock tires(!). It got stuck on a mega rock and took some creative thinking to get it recovered.

We'll be there next year if possible, and if they get the timings sorted out so that we can do the other events and then the trails!

We enjoyed meeting some fun people. Thanks to Eric Solomon (with the TJ) for letting my son cut his winching teeth and the guys on Buffalo Brook with the black D2! Sorry you didn't stay for Sunday! See you at MAR?

That Bumper is a Greg Hren Bumper. However, if you look close enough, you can see some of the "styling" cues of others. It is quite functional unlike my snowplow of an ARB. I hit the ground several times with that thing, plowing rocks and crap.

Man, you guys don't hold any punches at all, do you? Greg Hren is responsible for that, and no one else. He asked if he could borrow a few lines from mine, but he built that from start to finish. Like you said, it's got a little of everything thrown in.

Now be nice! I worked very hard on my bumper so it would be functional and different at the same time. If you keep this up, I'm gonna have to tickle you in the ribs. How'd you like that, Kyle?

Well , I have to give him a hand for putting it together himself (If he did). But that dont make it any less frightening... Whats funny is that someone posted a pic of a fat chick grafted onto a truck in another thread. I am seeing about the same kinda bad mental images with that thing hanging off the front ......

Hey Kyle, when it is time to hack up my ARB, do you think you can do anything to extend my DI rack to look and fit right on my DII?

I'm getting pretty beat up by John Lee on another thread over it. :)

I'll admit that Spiderman animation keeps me looking every time. He's got the moves, no question.....

Hey thank you all for the comments on the trails on which I was leading/teaching. I wanted you all to know that I thought the three groups I had worked well together. The chemistry was great. The trail we were on wasn’t half bad.

I wish I had run some trails, but not as a leader---it was tough, dirty, and awesome fun!

No one has named all the vehicles in the center of my Iceland book correctly yet!!!

Keep at it, for that Materpull Winch Extension!

Cheers, Bruce
