I just had to post that fact that I am incredibly impressed with the handling of my 97 disco. This past weekend on the freeway, a speeding celica (80+ mph) passed me on the left (I am in the 3rd lane from the fast lane) and was chaniging lanes into the 2nd lane from the fast lane. At the same time a Nissan truck was changing lanes out of the fast lane into the 2nd lane. The girl driving the celica freaked, turned hard to the right in front of me, then over corrected back to the left and then again to the right. she ended up spinning 180 and stopped broadside in my lane right in front of me. I acted within a split second with a quick turn to the right (luckily no one was next to me) swirved around the back end of her car, and then i turned quickly back to the left. On the turn back to the left I slid sideways and pitched up onto the right side two wheels (I am doing about 70mph at this point). I straightend out and looked back into my mirror just as another car smacked the front of the celica. About a minute later a truck pulled up next to me and was cheering my move of avoiding the car and not over correcting my Disco into a roll over situation.

I really could not believe how stable this vehicle acted in that situation!

With my lift and lack of sway bars.. I'd be dead and everything in my truck would be all over the highway. If I was in that situtation I would probably just have hit the brakes to slow me down a little and then t-bone the celica and hope for the best.

I still have my sways attached but with OME HD lift, but going around 70-75 the other day I did that dreaded maneuver that Todd did above. I have to say that it was absolutely scary as hell. I actually pulled off at the next exit and got out of the car for some air. Quite scary stuff.

I have done it a few times with big lift and no bars. I dont have words to desribe the slinking action....... "Stable" wasnt a word that came to mind. Eric is right , at some point ya gotta just hit the bitch and hope for the best..

Interesting feedback as I am getting ready to order an OME HD lift for my disco. SInce mine is stock right now, I am sure that was the only reason it did not roll. "YES" it scared the living crap out of me. I thought for a split second about just plowing into the car, but at that speed I may have killed the driver. Also, having my expecting wife in the passenger seat was not a situation where I wanted her to eat the airbag.

so for those of you who have the lifts with rear sway removed, would this have resulted in a roll over situation based on your experiences?

I guess that is just something for me to consider once my lift is on.

I feel like my truck will roll just from running over a squirel. But then again, my setup sucks.

I had a similar experience about 5 years ago while driving my lifted Jeep. I was cruising at about 50+mph down a country road when a Honda pulled out in front of me crossing my lane with less than 100 feet to stop. I got on the brakes hard and the Jeep went sideways (swerving would have put me in a head on in the other lane). The Jeep tire hopped on the right tires 3-4 times before it straightened out. Fortunately the Honda got out of the way with inches to spare.

Amazingly enough my shorts were clean. I can't say the same for my boss who was riding with me at the time

The Beast would have a "yard sale", rolling and spraying gear all over the road.

Glad eveything worked out for you.

I don't necessarily agree with this - my stock suspension was so damn sloppy...after OME HD suspension (springs and shocks), I corner with much more confidence. My COG is only about 2" higher than before. There is a cross street by my house where I'm always turning left - there's a dip in the intersection so you dip down as you start the left turn and then get thrown upwards over a hump as you exit the turn. I just about lost control and drove onto someone's lawn when I was in a hurry and took it too fast stock. With OME I can take that turn so fast that I drift and chirp the tires a bit on the exit. I still have sway bars on.

Now, if you're talking biggie slinky lifto with plush springs and shocks, that's a little different.

No, just a modest 2" lift, with sway bars attached during street driving. Who know's maybe this will add a certain stiffness that feels better than stock!

I think tire pressure would play a big roll in this situation. You probably want to be running a bit on the high side when lifted on the street.

I agree with Blue. The OME HD is a far safer suspension set up (with sway bars attached). Stiffer springs give you much less body roll. Even with rear sway bar off it feels better.
Todd, you'll be amazed at how much better the truck handles with the HD springs.

i wasnt amazed when i got my OME. it felt exactly the same as stock and that was satisfying. i think it has as much to do with shocks as it does springs. get some good shocks too.

13 year old stock springs on the RR blue, and stock also mean no Front or rear swaybar for my year '89

i was talking about the disco above

My Lift set up will likely be the OME HD, I have not decided yet on the shocks. I hear so many conflicting reports. I have run Billsteins on my Cherokee and was pleased with them, I am considering the same for the Disco. However, many people really seem to like the OME shocks.

My suspension needs are to carry my KTM dirt bike on the back with a hitch style carrier, I have carried it with the stock suspension and it does ok, it does sag in the rear. The bike and carrier weigh about 425 pounds. I am not a rock crawling type of driver, my adventures take me down long Baja dirt roads, so i need something to support carrying a lot of gear, and can handle rough wash board roads, and occasional deep ruts and sand.

My hopes are that the OMD HD will allow me to pack plenty of gear without heavy sagging, the shocks need to really absorb the higher speed driving on dirt.
