Howdy,

I wonder if the cat (thinking of the RH one) has a double skin. Or is the ceramic core directly underneath the casing ? (some of you I think removed the core, so might know).

Until I´ve gathered enough money to buy a proper replacement cat/front exhaust section I need to modify the right cat to make it slimmer in the area where my new double cardan driveshaft hits it. Shortly behind the offensive area there is a deep notch on both sides (almost 1cm deep, just the space I need) which is resticting the gas flow anyway.

The universal cats are MUCH cheaper and often quite a bit smaller as well. I was able to source mine for US$49.99 and it was a fair bit smaller than the original. About 2/3 or less the size in fact.

RD: The ECU will need the sensors to adjust the fuel/air mixture correctly. Without it will run rich and give a one-digit-mpg :(
I think that the Lambda sonds have a M18x1.5 thread. If you get a nut in that size (stainless-steel) or re-use the ones from the old exhaust then the problem could be solved.

Perrone, my problem is that I do not live in the US. The dealers over here want 200-300$ for a high-flow (metal-core instead of ceramic) cat. But I have a friend in Seattle. Can you give me the part# and the adress of the dealer, please. Maybe my friend can order them and send them here. :) :) And do you have the data how wide/long/high your cat is. (a website perhaps ?)
Meanwhile I will have to modify the existing one, I´m afraid.

hendrik,

I don't live in the UK, but that doesn't stop me ordering parts from Mansfield Motors and Craddocks! Companies today really have little trouble with shipping across the pond.

I bought my Catalytic converters from Summit Racing (www.summitracing.com) but there are a great many sources for them here.

For more info, you can read my article on this stuff on our club web page:

Best of luck,

as i suspected, thanks henry :)

i'll have to make it a point to make sure and get pipes with the o2 sensor treads in the pipe already

Can't you tune it to run a better mix without O2 sensors ??

Rob, I forgot:

I think there are different setups for the front Y-piece. The EFi have a 4-2 manifold without and a 4-(2)-1 one with cat - the latter has two outputs at the flange. The stainless steel section probably are the double downpipes which make putting a cat into it impossible. (I could mail you the relevant page from the parts-manual if you don´t have it). The older type (3.5carb) has a different manifold with a 4-1 downpipe - that could be a start.

That´s why I didn´t order a Y-Piece in s/s to weld cats into it and try to modify the old pipes. I don´t have old manifolds to convert to and no ambitions to do so.

I am, emailing the guy in england we figured the gasket from the manifold to the y pipes are the same on 3.5 v 3.9 so we concluded the pipe will fit, he is going to take pictures and email me tonight.

yes, 3.5 and 3.9 EFi-s have the same downpipes.
Suppliers like DLS offer "cat-back" systems of cat verhicles or the Y-piece from non-cat verhicles. These are the "double" pipes on each bank on the EFi systems (as shown on your link). The pre-Efi-exhausts have a "one-pipe"-Y-piece that makes it possible to cut a piece out of it and put the cat in between, but this Y-piece has a different gasket (just one hole) I think.

But if you will post (please do) when you got the right s/s front exhaust section and succeeded in you plans I might follow your route. Definately.

BTW: RRC - EFi systems from MY90 on (?) may feature a tune resistor that can be changed and tells the ECU that it deals with a Range with or w/o cat.
(Would have to see the parts manual to be sure).

i'm not sure whats up with this double piped action, but i have a parts manual here and i'm going to cross reference those numbers and see what i find. for the price i might try it anyway.
