Last night, on the way home from mtb'ing, I got pulled over in my DII. I have an ARB with fog lights installed in the winch "cooling" outlets on either side of the roller fairlead. I had the dealer reset the fog lights so that they come on automatically with the head lights (they did this free of charge).

MA State Trooper said that the law says fog lights can only be in use when their is actual moisture in the air/on ground. Granted, it was only a $35 ticket... "Unlawful use of fog lights".

He also added that the lights were menacing and intimidated other drivers. I asked jokingly if I should turn on the driving lights and roof rack lights to further intimidate... But he didn't find the humor in it.

Anyone know if this affects your insurance? I could beat the ticket, but for $35, it's not worth my time going to court over unless it hurt the insurance.

what a bunch of bullshit. tell that cop to pull the rulebook out of his nose, because it's crammed so far up his ass. menacing and intimidating....LOL....what a crock of shit. Thank God there's a law!

so, there was absolutely 0% humidity in MA last night? what's it like on that planet with no moisture in the air?

Believe me, I pointed out all of the other cars passing by us with their lights on....

This was on 128 heading south, around Lynnfield. I gave him shit but he didn't take it. I had been behind the cop, about a 100 yards behind him for 10 miles or so. Then he pulled around behind me and hit the lights.

I guess my lights were too bright and in his eyes for too long. Must have been the lift on my truck.

Dave, I don't know for sure but I don't think it would effect your insurace. It is probably a very minor ticket like a parking ticket and won't show up on your driving record.

Everyone here in Colorado driving SUV's have the fog lights on all the time. Not that big or a deal but maybe because they where higher up or something and the lift just caught his attention. Still is bullshit!!

was it foggy out? not to piss on your parade but some people simply believe that it is rude (or even down right unsafe) to have all the lights on when you really dont need them. here in hick- ville the reds and their hi-lifted chevys with the KCs tend to run them constantly. now out on the backroads in the middle of no where its not a big deal but when your appraoching other cars either directly or from the rear they can really cause a vision problem. we dont notice it as much in our rides because we sit up out of the focus of the lights, but your grams in his buick is in that focus. some folks dont drive alot at night and are not accustomed to driving with vehicles with extra lighting. to put it a bit more bluntly.....you blind them, this temporary loss of vision due to your foggys cause a loss of reference then the confidence goes, confusion sets in and this can and has led to a traffic crashes. not your problem i know but do you really need the extra lights. if your downtown is it needed? on the interstate with all the other cars and trucks are a dozen 100 watt lights a requirement? the same applies to the extra jigh output headlamp bulbs, using a conventional low beam and a high watt highbeam is great, but who the heck needs a 90 watt low beam. if you have that much of a problem seeing at night maybe a chaueffer to truck you around.
ok i flamed long enuff, i dont want to offend but lights like the other equipment on your truck has its place, you just happened to use yours in the wrong place, at the wrong time!

Hey Dave, who is your insurance carrier so we can call them and make sure they are aware... hehehe :)

We still haven't figured out our driving schedule for MAR, but looks like we are talking about leaving Philly on Thursday night after work.

Thanks Greg,

Thursday would be very tight for me. But let me get back to you as we get closer to the date. I'll have a better idea in another week or two as to when I can roll out of town.

Thanks again.

I guess people who drive cars that have the "day-time" running lights are out of luck in the state of MA.

Some COPS are just assholes.

Actually, since he was behind the cop for so long it sounds like the officer found the lights "menacing and intimidating." Maybe he has bulb envy? Or perhaps his wife makes him drive a Vitara off-duty and he's just looking for an excuse to take vengence...

I always thought the Vitara would've sounded a lot more "menacing and intimidating" had Suzuki named it Viagra. Vitara sounds like a name for a description drug for impotence or something like that...
