Does anybody know roughly how much I should expect to pay to ship a truck over from the UK? I am on the west coast, but, if it made a huge difference, I would go to the east coast and bring it back. Has anybody on the board done this?

Thanks,
-SETH

Why not do roll on roll off?

It is about 900 to an east coast port

With a container you end up having to pay to have the container loaded, unloaded, etc.

Unless you are getting a bunch of parts too (RORO you do not get to put in spare parts) or two trucks containers are more costly.

FWIW

Ron,
Thanks for the reply. Honestly hadn't thought of roll-on/roll-off as an option. Much less than I thought I would have to pay for shipping. Any disadvantages to RORO?

Thanks,

Any disadvantages to RORO?

They will steal anything not bolted down in the truck (no biggy just don't leave shit in the truck).

You have to ship it without gas and without a battery.

I am sure someone here has done it and can give more input. While I have not personally imported anything from the UK (only canada) a fair number of the local people have and this is what they have communicated.

There is a 25-year old importation requirement. Now, anything build in 1977 or earlier can be imported.

If it's newer, then it has to be made to be identical to the US-version. So, if you bought a '85 BMW in Germany, once it arrives in the US, before you can leave the facility with it, you have to take it to a licensed shop to have the safety glass, lights, seatbelts, bumpers, and emissions modified/replaced as-needed. A) it's not cheap as far as parts an labor, and b) there's a big fee (several thousand dollars) on top of the cost of parts and labor. In the end, you end up spending more than if you had just bought US-version to begin with (which is the goal of it).

If it doesn't have a US-analogy, then no, you can't bring it. For example, a Porsche 959 was never legally imported for street-use in the US. So, there is nothing you can do to make it like a US counterpart, so it can't be street-legal. You could being it over and take it to car-shows, or racetracks, but not take it on the road.

So, let's say you want to bring in a '97 Discovery. Well, if the one you have in the UK is a Tdi, you have to pull the engine and install a V8 since the Tdi wasn't available here.

Now, you can ship over a Td5 engine, and install it in a Defender yourself. Won't pass emissions, but most places don't have emissions, only certain states, and in a lot of those, only in certain towns. (ie, Richmond or Norfolk, or Nashville, you have to pass emissions, but in Pennington Gap or Greeneville, no, there is no emissions testing.

FWIW,

That's my understanding......

I'm not sure how you would go about proving that, though. Theoretically, they should just let you take it on, and then if you tried to register it, then the clerk should catch that it's not available. Again, if you're in an urban center, their systems will probably catch it, whereas if you live in Backwater, BFE, and the clerk's a cousin of yours, then there's a good chance that they would just type something into the computer and send you on your way w/ a title and registration in hand if you're lucky.

I think so.... I'm not an offical in that field, but that's my understanding, that you could.

Do you have the $$$ to buy a new Td5 Defender and use it on the farm? If so, I'd also like to talk to you about a grant for paying off my student loans for me.... lol :)

I am a student..too so sorry about that..I was just looking into the whle thing my dad likes the d-90 but I have not gotten him to the point of obsession that I have reached..I tink that it would be able to get a Defender over here a ew one couldnt be more than 26k then couldnt be much more to bring it over..I was just wondering it you could bring one over and have it

I like D90s too, but just don't see paying THAT much for one.

However, the prices really are starting to come down on the ones that are already over here. And, I really think Ford will be bringing the Defender back. Once that happens, the 94-97 Defenders are really going to start to go down in price then.

Another thing, if you like a D90, how about an 88" SIII? You can get those easily, and for a LOT less. And, if you aren't happy w/ it compared to a Defender, you can "Defenderize" it.

Just a thought.....

yeah I guess but as opposed to getting someone to put a TDI in a d 90 that you have already bought I think it would be worth it to make a concerted effort to import one from teh UK

Well....

If you have a D90 here already, then you can get the Tdi put in it and still drive it.

If you brought over a Td5, then if you manage to get them to let you have it on the farm, then they'll probably keep tabs on you and make sure that you don't try to register it for road use.

If I had a Td5, I know that I would want to drive it, other than around the farm here....

How about this...you "could" swap out the serial number tags with a totaled truck and remove model badges and so on. If you are in the middle of BFE, then Johnny law probably won't know the difference. If anyone does catch you on it you can say you changed the body panels for a "custom" look.
I don't know if this is a good idea on not. It might be more trouble than it's worth even if you don't get caught. Just an idea...

Thanks, Ron, for the info, and everyone else for their input. Although I would love to bring over a nice 300Tdi 110, I was thinking more along the lines of a Series III Lightweight and a Sankey trailer (always wanted a lightweight, and my dad wants the Sankey to tow behind the SIIA). Still trying to decide if it would be more economical (although less of an adventure, really) to wait for a really excellent lightweight to come up for sale here in the states. Still in the planning stages, though, so we'll see.

Thanks again,
-SETH
