OK I need help. I have a '98 Disco I and '02 Disco II in which I want to install a permanent GPS and CB radio. I want the end result to look professional and functional, not an eye sore. I've read all the messages people have left behind and I haven't found one I like. So here is what I am looking for. Can it be done?

1.) For a GPS I am thinking of Garmin's streepilot III, which I think I can mount it where the sun roof controls are now. I plan to move the sun roof controls further up. However I've heard the screen is too small, especially when driving. Is this true? I've being told I can use Garmin's GPS 2006c marine gps. Yeah, I know its a marine product, but it can be use for the road. If I go this way I think I can mounted it on the middle console lid. An installer to me he can build it so that it pops up in the middle for the driver and co-pilot to see. It folds away when not in use.

2.) CB Radio. I want one where the face detaches. I want to put the face where that stupid, useless garage door opener-link is on the upper console. I plan to hide the main unit, most likely in the glove compartment. Kenwood makes a model, are there any others? Any suggestions?

3.) Laptop I want to install a power converter so I can permanently to attach a computer outlet in the glove compartment.

4.) If I go with the Streetpilot, I would like to mount a screen in the middle console box, (see above specs on the Garmin 2006c). I plan to use this screen to display what is on the computer for both the driver and rear passenager can see.

Ok there it is.......

Wow Peter!

IMHO - you have way over-emphasized the importance these trivial items have on the overall driving experience :)

I use a Garmin ETrex Summit: Toss it on the dash. It interfaces with my laptop which sits on my console directly between the seats during travels (on the floor off-road). The ETrex also functions to get me around on hikes and bikes as it fits neatly in my Camelbak. I use an optional cord with both DC and serial interfaces for power and comm.

Laptop uses a proprietary DC/AC inverter ($60) and plugs into a 3-way cig lighter adapter with GPS power. I can conveniently toss this laptop in the back so my kids can watch DVD's when needed :)

CB? Worthless 99.995% of the time so it gets velcroed to the dash (on my radar detector spot)and use a mag-mount antenna. I do have a hard-wired Kenwood TM-D700 HAM radio with a good dual-band antenna. This radio can interface with my GPS and report my location via APRS to www.aprs.net.

My point is that you do not need to permanently mount any of these items. Once you have them you will soon see that they are novelties at best. However, even as novelties, they do have thier uses. The best way to explore those uses is to leave the items in a non-permanent install with as much flexibility as possible.

Now if you are just looking to make you interior more confusing, that is another issue...

Oh - I forgot to say: The CB, Laptop, and GPS are never in my rig unless I have a use for them...

i just have to say to check out the Garmin 176 before you make any decisions. several others on this board have this newer unit and will agree.

i love my CB. talking to truckers on long drives can be fun. and just about every event i go to i use it. that with FRS radios, but the CB's have better range.
