Just saw this movie. THIS IS A MUST SEE!!!! It is based very closely on the Battle of LZ X-Ray in the Ia Drang Valley in 1965. It accurately depicts the courage of the American soldier and what he can do when called upon. I am a vet, and I implore you all to see this and learn about how bravely our soldiers fought during this war.

A good portion of this was filmed right here at Ft. Benning, Georgia. In fact, Mel Gibson and Sam Elliot were regulars in town for a month or so during the filming. Mr. Elliot is a very nice person and seemed to fit the part well. Mr. Gibson is incredibly short.

Hey Ron, tell me, do they still use the old barracks out at Sand Hill? I went thru Basic there some years ago and since you are there I figured you might know. Are the Jump towers in use now? How are things over at Victory Drive?? Thanks, a former 11-Bravo,1 Papa

JMcD,

I'm civilian, but I do know the jump towers out at Benning are still in use. Sand Hill barracks are empty and Victory Drive is still trouble by the 1/2 hour...

isnt sand hill were the 128th INF worked out of during the 70's. my dad retired at Benning. i grew up there and the biggest regret in life is leaving that place. i have hunted and walked alot of Benning. for those who dont know the movie Green Beret with John Wayne was filmed (for the most part) at Ft. Benning.

Sand Hill "closed" maybe 5 or 6 years ago. I've also hunted a lot of the land around the base that has now become part of the base for training and Ranger school exercises. Just last week I went down to find the access road off of St. Mary's Road to my best "secret" wheeling spot was closed off by huge concrete blocks in the road. Base is pretty much off limits to non-Army personnel.

wow, thats a lot of nostalgia!! I love that area, our behind Sand Hill where the Ranger school was (is?) Can't tell you how many klicks I humped there with some good friends, not all with us anymore. I hope if they ever close that Base they just leave it exactly the way it is.. Old wood Barracks and all. Thanks Ron, glad you brought Benning up!! JMcD

Ahh, the Benning School for Boys! I left so much sweat at that place. When I was there last (98), the towers are still there, but not used. Jump school ain't what it used to be. Former Infantry Officer myself and the knocks you got at jump school were part of the price of admission. Part of Sand Hill was used to stage troops going to Bosnia the first go round. I agree, the area is a national shrine and needs to be preserved forever. BTW, ever been to the Infantry Museum? what a cool place! I will take my sons there one day to show them what the truth is.....

i have hunted from catus O pete to the drop zones (Alabama side) and it is bar none the most interesting base my dad's career has ever taken me. my dad worked at bldg 1 for a time then when the 128th was re-activated around 1972 or so he was there. the base has some of the greatest bass fishing lakes to be found. i spent many hours around twilight pond a few that were closed. between the hot sticky summers to the cold but livable winters Benning was great. i still remember the Rangers hooting and oorahing early in the crisp mornings as i sat in my deer stand trying to stay awake. actually the city of columbus was nice even the occasional trip across the 13th street bridge into PC was not without an adventure or two. i lived for a short time just off victory drive on Torch hill Rd. and worked after school at a Chevron Oil station at those particular streets intersection. but that was a time much different than today...sorry its nice to hear that others appericate the Armys largest base in the world....

Frickin' ground-pounders.
You young people, don't listen to these old grunts. Be civilized and join the Navy, or if you must be somewhat uncouth, be a Seabee.

LOL, yeah, I would like to argue with Mr. Jones, but quite frankly, after the crap I have been through, he may have a point..

If you must join the Navy, at least join the mens department: The corp............

Dad was a combat Marine, so was my Uncle: both did the Solomons campaign, including Guadacanal. Uncle stayed on after the war and also was at the Frozen Chosin in Korea. Last tour of duty was RVN, during Operation Hastings. 20 plus years, always a combat marine, a grunt (retired as Master Gunnery Sergeant). I will never be able to fill this guys shoes.......no matter what I do in life

Although as a young buck I thought I was missing out, I can say that I was lucky to not have to see real combat. Also, my dad was lucky, getting out of the Corps just before Vietnam got hot. But one of my uncles, my dad's oldest brother, was killed on Iwo Jima. He was also a grunt, at the time he was carrying one end of a stretcher....

Jake, I know how you feel.......

What Brigade of the 82nd is he?? Is he attached to the UN or part of the UN? I still have some pals down there at Bragg, might know someone who knows someone who knows your son. I dont envy him though, couldn't pay me enough to be any where near the Balkans.. Nasty biz there. JMcD

I was an Aviation Ordnanceman on the USS Enterprise, but then I saw the light and became a Seabee (We build, we fight!) and spent most of my time helping out the jarheads. Also didn't have to wear those candy-ass Navy uniforms except for dress inspections, and those were pretty rare. I was also lucky enough to have missed combat, I snuck in between Desert Storm and Bosnia.

That's how I became one of the rarest creatures, a Seabee with a Aviation Warfare pin.

Nah, I dont think so Mr Watson, the word I have (semi reliable) is the dopes on a rope(101st) are there for the duration, that theatre seems ideally suited for their method of engagement, ie: helicopter assault. And they are without a doubt a Kick Ass outfit, more than capable of completing that mission. Lets hope your son stays far from that shithole.

Here's to all the Men who Walk the Walk to keep our asses safe and free.. JMcD
