last fall there was a string about a Dunlop winter tire that was the cat's ass for winter driving here in New England. My arthurits tells me we are in for a kick-butt winter this year & I'm all ready to dip into the 401K and put out whatever is necessry to retread my 98 Disco. I even have a set of dedicated ex-MOD utility rims waiting. Any tire guru's here who can make some recomendations as to size and model based on experience or superior knowledge? Any info on this Green Diamond tire with the carbide mix? But - at over a hundred bucks per tire it seems pretty pricy. OTOH, they seem pretty neat being that they claim to recycle old tires into the compound making new ones?

Jerry, I used the Dunlop Radial Rover RT's last winter on my DII, here in the Northeast. To put simply, these tires are best in the winter conditions. I never once was stuck, never slid off any roads nor did I have any problems offroading them in snow. I would highly recommend them if your looking for an aggresive, snow and ice tire. They even come with holes ready for studs...

Dave, I don't think Jerry is ready for some good decent tires. I guess he'll have to go to Pep Boys and purchase the Futuras which are under $100 each. BTW, the Futuras are good tires.

many thanks dave - I recall our previous conversation about this last fall. BTW, sorry we never got together re: the antenna mount for the D-II. I did finally resolved the problem though with the able assistance of my local dealer Land Rover of Scarborough. I took my D-I in for a service and drove out with a D-II loner that I had all day for my purposes. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Oh, yeah, John, don't be snide, it's unnecessary and speaks volumes about YOU

oh, yeah, there was an outfit in Tennessee selling tires and they were shipping for .99 cents per tire. Are they still around?

Jerry, if you want to spend less than $100 per tire you will have to get the Futuras. Nothing wrong with that. Many folks on Dweb run them and they are fine.

No disrespect or sarcaism intended.

"...speaks volumes of you"

Relax man.

OK John - I appologize if I shot from the hip on that one...didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I don't mind paying whatever it takes to tread the disco - my wife means more to me than a few bucks but on balance I still shop around whenever I can. Web walking makes that real easy now day's. I just recalled that great shipping deal from a year ago and wondered if it was still around. At 105K miles I have a cracked exhaust manifold and some seals going so I'm looking at an early 120K service and new tires and I've been fixated on money the last couple of weeks. Crap like this only happens in bunches y'know?

I know enough to believe you generally get what you pay for - I'm passing 35K on the Michline' that came on the Disco 18 months ago so before they get dangerous I'll be looking to swap them out for another Mich highway tread tire - hopefully something that is a bit quieter. Thanks for your imput....and, again, I'm sorry about the snide commnent.

That's ok Jerry, I don't even know what snide means... :)

FWIW, I never paid more than $50 per tire on BFG ATs (slightly used)...call me cheap!!!

Good luck.

I just looked at eTire and for the tires I want they need over $70 shipping. What ever happened to that tire outfit in TN who was shipping for .99 cents? AHWWWOOOOOOOOOOOO!
