I am looking at getting the Yakima Doublecross, or something comparable, rack for use with the factory roof rack(rails?) on my '96 Discovery. I was wanting to get any input you might have about these brands. Is one better than the other? Pros or cons about them? I have used Saris racks before on other cars and was pleased with them, but did not like the lack of expansion that both Yakima and Thule offer.

Primarily I will be using this for a roof mount bike rack. Eventually I might add mor options so I'm wanting the expandibility of the Yakima and Thule systems.

Thanks in advance.
Jeff

i personally like the look of Thule better and had one one my Oldsmobile. i still have it and plan to get the mounting clamps to attach it to the factory rack on my '97 Disco. as far as quality i think they are both pretty much the same, except i think the Yak rack's tubular load bars are a little more veratile. not sure if they are stronger than the Thules either. if i were buying a new rack and not re-using my old one, i'd probably go with Yakima.

Yakima Products are very nice. Check out Classifieds for sale.

I have a pretty extensive collection of Yakama parts that I have acumulated over the years. I still move things from car to car. Both racks are just about the same on a disco. You may want to consider how the racks will set up on the other cars that you may use. The parts that
i use the most are the Yahima ski rack with Thule mounts on the factory bars.

I've had both the Thule 415 feet and yakima doublecross on the factory roof rack of my DII. I found that the fit or wrap of the factory bars by the Thule feet was not stable or tight enough. I went to Yakima and am very happy with the fit and finish. Their parts also seems to not rust as quickly as the Thule stuff I had. But that's merely subjective...

I also like the doublecross because they raise the bars just high enough to allow the sunroofs to clear underneath. An added bonus.

Thanks for the info. It seems the general consensus is that the Yakima is more popular/better. For those of you that have the Yakima and use it with the factory rack, what feet/clamps do you use? I was looking at the doublecross, but I went to a local dealer yesterday and they recommended the low-rider. They didn't have the doublecross in stock but did have the low-rider in stock, so I don't know if they were just trying to push what they had available or not.

Thanks again.

As far as I understand it, the low rider is a lower tower than the doublecross. I think that unless you have sunroofs, the lowrider would be the way to go, as it is always better to have any weight on the roof, as low as possible. Lowering your center of gravity. Otherwise, with sunroofs, I would recommend the doublecross.

As far as clamping or fit, I believe they both work on the same principle.

Is one more expensive than the other?

Dave,

No, they are both the same price. From looking at them on the Yakima site, they look like they might attach differently.

Here is an image of them:

I've used the doublecross on Volvo 850 Euro rails, which are similar to the Disco factory roof rails. I've tested them for fit on my Disco, but have not had the need to actually use them. They are very well made. My wife backed into our garage door before it was totally open, trashing the top portion of a Yakima Rocket Box, trashing the first two panels of the garage door (18feet wide), but the doublecross and Volvo rails were not damaged at all, except for a few scratches. And, I was able to use marine grade epoxy, fiberglass and automotive bumper touch-up paint to repair the rocket box. Yakima was kind enough to send me new decals to complete the repair. I like the quality of their products, and as a company, they were very nice to deal with.

Jeff, thanks for the pics. Again, I doubt Yakima would sell a product that didn't really work or attach correctly. I like the way the doublecross fits. It looks as though the low rider has less contact surface area with the bar. Given that I tend to carry a lot on my roof, I would stick with the doublecross. But it is all in your own opinion....

Good luck!

anyone have some THULE feet clamps for the Disco 1 that they want to sell? I've seen the tall feet that clamp to the rain gutter and also the pods that clamp to the stock roof rack rails. I'll buy either. All I want is four Thule feet. Thanks.

i have a set blue. mine clamp to the gutters. i like these better than the ones the clamp to the existing rack rails. get much more 'length' out of the rack for sure.
after i get home from work i will get them out of storage and snap some pics of them. have not seen them myself in some time.

Cool Garrett. The gutter clamps are way better. I'll take em, if you don't want them. Would you email me (use my office email) so we can wheel & deal? :) Thanks Garrett.
