I saw this eBay listing and thought I'd ask how he has it licensed here.
He came back with

Quote:

THE PREVIOUS OWNER IMPORTED IT INTO HAWAII & HAD IT TITLED, LICENSED &
REGISTERED IN HAWAII. I BOUGHT IT & HAD IT FULLY TITLED, LICENSED,
REGISTERED & INSURED IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL IN FLORIDA
DOING THIS. THE VEHICLE IS IN MIAMI, FLORIDA. I KEPT THE HAWAII PLATE
ON THE CAR AS A MAKE SHIFT "VANITY" PLATE. I OWN THE CAR FREE & CLEAR &
IT IS TITLED IN MY NAME IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. THANKS FOR YOUR
INTEREST..

Interesting...someone got 55 grand I can have (not borrow)?

what is even more interesting is there was that yellow one a couple months ago that was imported into Hawaii and then brought to Miami where it was being sold on ebay, if my memory serves me right the seller is the same guy. Must be a loop hole in Hawaii somehow if this thing is indeed legal (which it probably isn't).

He kept the Hawaii plates on 'cause the pictures were taken in Hawaii! Something doesn't ring true.
(Unless that's the famous Miami volcanic rocks!)

The VIN does show on carfax with two records although I didn't look it up fully.
Admitedly, he only has two feedbacks on eBay and both as a buyer, then he sells a $55K car.

Be careful here, guys. This vehicle still isn't legal. Importing vehicles into the US is NOT done under an individual state's authority. Importation is done under federal jurisdiction. If he got it into the country be any means, hook or crook or whatever, he could then get it licensed for operation in a state, because, at that point, the state basically doesn't care. But, it still isn't legal. If the feds find out about it, they could still take it away from him (or you) and impose a hefty fine. The states have authority to licensed vehicles, but not to approve their importation into the US.

So I shouldn't have sold my first born? :)

That, of course, depends upon the first born.

I have been doing some general research on this very topic as of late. There seem to be ways to get vehicles into this country legally even if they are not on the DOT Federalized Acceptance List or whatever its called.

Fortunately for me, my wife's family are all farmers and I am currently exploring the farm vehicle approach for importation. Not exactly positive this will work yet but I am still researching it.

It seems to be easy (and expensive) to get a 93 110 in since they are already on the list. You may still have to have some serious work done by professionals.

I'll keep you all posted on any new info I dig up.

This is the exact same defender that was listed about a month ago. Same seller, same price, same plates, same picture etc.. Something is definately up with this guy! I was told that Defenders Had some sort of loop hole in Hawaii and from ther transporting a vehicle is just a matter of state to state. Registration of said vehicle is still problem. Now there is always ways around it but It would still be risky. Besides the person that I know of that did import a 93 110 Tdi only spent 30 something thousand vehicle, required mods, and importaion for the whole thing.

farm use does allow importation, but you get a non-transferable title

I know guys that have done it then applied for a replacement Title and then recieved a title that did not have the big non-transferable stamp

but I also know guys that have had very expensive vehicles siezed and n ot returned

wisconsin has some good personal use laws that can get you licensed...just dont ever try to sell the thing

Max: I meant your friend that did a personal import. I contacted the seller on eBay and he seems to be an ass. I told him that only the 93 was on the federalized DOT list and here is what he said:

Quote:

THIS VEHICLE IS 100% LEGAL... IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE BIDDING , THEN SO BE IT. I TRULY TAKE OFFENSE TO YOUR ACCUSATIONS. I AM A RESPECTED BUSINESSMAN IN MY COMMUNITY & HAVE NO REASON TO INVOLVE MYSELF IN ANY TYPE OF FRAUD. IF YOU WANT TO BRING SOME FORM OF ACTION AGAINST ME OR REPORT ME TO DOT, I WILL SURELY INVOLVE MY ATTORNEY.

HAVE A NICE DAY.

he may have it tottally legal...that does not mean that he can sell it to you and you then have it legal.

you can own and register just about anything...its the reselling that causes problems

Well the only way i know of getting any sort of vehicle in2 the US that's less than 25 years old is to get it converted by a RI, with the DOT/EPA papers & all that stuff. The vehicle & the transport may not be that much, but the federalization sure as hell will be.

call you local DOT and ask them what the registration process will entail for your 2001 110CSW TD5 you just bought from some guy who imported it.

P.S. it's a beautiful truck

SO THAT YOU & I ARE CLEAR ON THE PARTICULARS OF THIS VEHICLE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THE DEFENDER & WAS GIVEN A CLEAR TITLE. I THEN RECEIVED THE TRUCK IN FLORIDA & HAD IT TITLED, REGISTERED, LICENSED & INSURED IN MY NAME. I DRIVE THE VEHICLE EVERYDAY & HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS FROM A LEGAL STANDPOINT WITH ANYONE. IT HAS BEEN SERVICED AT MY LOCAL LANDROVER DEALERSHIP & WELCOMED WITH OPEN ARMS. AGAIN, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BID ON THE TRUCK, BID W/ CONFIDENCE. I AM NOT LOOKING TO RIP ANYONE OFF OR CREATE PROBLEMS FOR POTENTIAL BUYERS. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL TRUCK, EITHER I WILL SELL IT OR HOLD ONTO IT FOR MY OWN USE. I AM NOT HARDPRESSED FOR THE CASH...

Really though guys. When you think about it. As soon as you alter your suspension on your truck it becomes technically illegal for street use according to most laws. Most of us here are driving illegal trucks right now so if you got the money I would say buy it and who cares how you get it registered.. Call it a kit car, farm equipment, what ever.

Posted on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 01:49 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

not really true eric

lifts only violate some state registration laws

the feds never could get the states to agree(thanks to SEMA) on a federal lift law so there isnt one.

now if you have messed with EPA equipment thats a whole new story.

fact is this guys a chump I been e-mailing him all day and he has very carfully skirted all the questions about the true status of the importation.

some guys think its a joke...then the feds show up and take your car/truck/airplane

I have a rich friend that got his FJ75 found and deported back to Canada...it does really happen

and 50k to someone that seams to love his trtuck but wants to sell it fast makes me suspicous.

there is no way most states will let this thing get registered

in IL where I am I know a guy that went to register a used BMW745turbo 30 days later he got a bill from the feds that was due for 5k for importation violations in 1988 ...three owners ago

computers are making this kinda stuff tougher

you are right about the kit thing and Farm exeptions but then you can not sell(reasign) the vehicle in most states.

legal bullshit can be just that...but when you step in it,it stinks just the same

Blue...cue the shit picture....lol

Illegal in your state is still illegal and will get you into trouble if you get caught. Here in VA we have a lift law which I'm already over. Plus, you aren't supossed to be driving around with sway bars removed, modified trailing links, and modified front arms. Which I am. Most states have the same type of laws. May not be Fed, but, still against the law anyways. Whatever though.. It's only against the law once you get caught. :)

another thing (as Steve & others have noticed) is the fact that those pics were indeed taken in Hawaii. Florida is all carbonates, and the earth in the pics is clearly basaltic lava that makes up just about all of subaerial Hawaii (looks like a pahoehoe flow with a little crushed pahoehoe or maybe even a'a' in the pic of the rear of the 110). Of course, maybe they're just old pics...

YES! My interart has been appropriately summed up and duly appreciated by an obvious connoisseur. I went with a starburst pattern around the 110 to signify the beauty of the vehicle...but what is this enigmatic cloud that obfuscates our beloved Defender? It appears to be a pile of bullshit, but....it is difficult to decipher....need to think clearly....ahhhhhhhhh...forgive me, I have swooned....

OK, HERE'S ANOTHER oops sorry, OK, here's another observation. This is a 2001 so that means it's at least one maybe two years old, 2560 miles. Kinda low for a car that he states 'I DRIVE THE VEHICLE EVERY DAY..' Where? Up and down the drive? Afraid to take it on the street perhaps? Then he says 'IT HAS BEEN SERVICED AT MY LOCAL LANDROVER DEALERSHIP..' What did they do? Empty the ashtray!? It's not even ready for an oil change.
This guy's up to something, or maybe we're all just jealous 'cause we don't have one, goddammit!
