After pulling the rear drive shaft to replace a u joint I went ahead and drained the transfer box on my 1990 RRC this weekend - it was jet black nasty... I re-filled with 90wt. and will drain and fill again next weekend.. Then while surfing e-bay I came across a Viscous Coupling for sale which states that if your transfer box fluid is black this may indicate your VC may be toast and leaking into the transfer box fluid ?!?!?! Can anybody explain this blackening, leaking process ? What leaks and where. I think my VC is fine after testing it on the rocks this past weekend but the blackness of the transfer box fluid was scary... so I want to investigate further. Thanks All! |

The VC is filled with a silicone based fluid that firms up when it is stirred(one axle is slipping). Don't know what color the fluid is. If you can drive the truck with one driveshaft removed, then the VC is probably good. If the tires are chirping while you are manuvering, then the VC is probably locked up and is toast also. I thought the '90RRC came with a BW tcase, in which case ATF is req'd. Does yours have a LT230? |

the BW viscous unit has vent holes to allow the ATF to flow thru & interact with the cut patterns in the clutch plates, there is no 'majic flooid' in a rover case. what makes them fail is usually a broken axle or CV joint making the VC overheat & break its casing from the expansion or welding the plates together the black stuff is burnt clutch fibre & cooked ATF. FWIW BW #3 |

Thanks for that insight Mr.Bad News .I'll order a VC from england and keep it handy for the failure that is bound to happen - just tested it though and it is still working oddly enough.. It is a BW case - what damage may result from running 20 tough, tough miles with 90wt instead of ATF ??? TIA JB |

JB, i'd say not as much as 20 miles on the highway at 90 mph. gear oil won't do any damage to the VC, it just doesn't lubricate that well the chain in the case. peter |

JB - for the price of BW viscous unit, you'd probably be better off swtiching to an LT230 - something to think about anyway. Bill |

Yes - an LT230 would be great but just not practical right now...I am hoping to find a parts rover to pull a vc from myself locally but having said that , here are are my recent UK quotes for those in the market for a VC. ------------------------------------------------- PJ 4x4 - UK Reconditioned VC- this does not require an exchange unit, and is available from stock for £ 330.00 New - £ 495.00 - again, this does not need an exchange unit. Shipping to Alabama - £ 45 - this is 2 to 3 day delivery with UPS -------------------------------------------------- Paddock 4x4 - UK Viscous coupling RTC6044 £225.00 with a sur charge of £50.00 which is refundable on exchange of your old unit. Delivery would be £12.00. All prices are subject to VAT at 17.5%. -------------------------------------------------- I am waiting to hear from Rover Cannibal and looking on LRX.com as well. Any other leads on VCs for sale is much appreciated.. Randall - where did you end up getting your BW from ? Care to share the price ? |

JB - I know of a complete BW transfer case for sale - it has about 135K on it though, but it would probably go cheap. E-mail me if you want the info (it's not me selling it, another local shop owner is parting a RRC) Bill |

JB...my answer Ordered a rebuilt BW from Ashcrofts Transmissions, who specialize in LR drivetrains. Price was 550 pounds plus a 350 pound core charge. Ordered it on the 6th, it is supposed to be on my dock on the 12th. I will be returning the core via ocean freight. Sure hope this cures my vibration woes(since April!!). Will let you know the results. Randall |

Randall, did ya get the 3-1 or 4-1 box? the 4-1 box & gears & lockers would make for an awsome rig! or did ya get the 230 box to fix the viscous problem forever? my rig wantsa know what I'm puttin on it! (soon as I decide & can $ it) newsie (as in printed daily) |

Newsie Not sure what you mean by 3-1 or 4-1. Are you referring to the BW model# or the low range gear ratio. I do have 4.11 gears and "lockers". Unfortunately my vibration got complety out of hand after intalling the modified diffs. My prefference is the viscous coupling. And I think that if you convert to the 230 TC it will cost just as much as a rebuilt BW unit. Plus I am in no mood to experiment right now. Just want the vibration to end! Randall |

1990 RRC with 2 inch OME lift. 245-75-16 tires. After never having vibes with this lift I recently got a nasty vibe .. I still have the nasty vibe after replacing the rear ujoints and regreasing the sliding splines of the rear d.s .. I will do the same to the front drive shaft next weekend and change out the front output bearing on the t-box... |

all my studius info says the BW is crap & the 380 unit is preferred for trailing! or did I miss sumptin on the BB! I shopped the ashcroft stuff & (IMHO) the 3-1 or 4-1 low box unit for the price is where my money would go! (if I had some to spend!) my 89 has plenty of vibes, I just work the wheel! Newsie, knowledge 101, asking for more! |

As a writer I also get to read a lot, I see the LT-230 case is cheaper & preferred by most posters here. Is there a secret to the BW ? I see Ashcroft sells lower ratio 230 units for much less. the Q is; why spend twice as much $ for a stock box, when less will get ya the preferred unit with a lower 'crawl'ratio? did I miss sumtin? newsie |

"My prefference is the viscous coupling...Plus I am in no mood to experiment right now " Randall Smith. When I started the thread I wanted a quick fix w/out pulling the whole BW sucker out of there. The VC can be replaced in situ...Now that I am confident my VC is working, not burnt fiber and ATF, just nasty ATF) I am looking at the lt-230 for when the BW does give out for more hard core offroading. -------------------------------------------------- " Seek truth from fact " Deng X'iao Ping " Knowing is half the battle " G I Joe |
