My '88 RRC has a small leak near the front drivers side wheel. I believe it is comiing from the swivel pin housing, but not positive. Any suggestions? Is it possible to replace, or fix this one.

If the chrome plating of the swivel ball is intact then repair costs are neglegible. It´s some hours of work though so if you let sbdy do it then you´ll cry.
Replacing the big seal is the best cure.
using the grease that LR put in their cars for a few years now will probably cure the leak and offers good lubrication, but some don´t like it (mainly for servicing reasons); it´s sold in a little green satchet with the right amount for one housing for about 10-15$ (?).
Ignoring the leak if if doesn´t lubricate things that dont need oil (tires,..) and topping up regularly another common practice with Rovers.

Tom, most likely it is the swivel seal. It is very common. What I did on my 88 RR is take apart the whole hub (with CV and swivel housing) and cleaned everything (even the seal). It stopped my leaking problem. I also removed one spacer on the swivel pin.

The process is very easy but somewhat time consuming. There are a few specialty tools you need if you want to do the job right.

I also replaced the bearings and inner and outer seals.

Good luck and keep us posted.

The leak is not real bad, but it does lburicate the brake rotor for me? Can you get the LR grease at a Land Rover Center? I think I will try that first, and if that doesn't work, change the seals, etc. In the meantime, what brand / weight whould you recommend to use for top offs. The manual calls for 90W. Anyone use fully synthetic?

Thanks,
Tom

Yes, the "grease" is readily available from LR dealer. Just keep in mind that you may stop the leak from the inside out, yet, you are not repairing the item that will allow stuff like water, etc. from going in. John is right in suggesting also changing out the seal. That prevents stuff from going out or in.

There are many manufactures for 90W also readily available. Even WalMart has a synthetic 80/90W oil. Key is don't let it go dry.

Hope this helps.

I tried the grease and did not like it. It still leaked after a while and was a mess to clean once I got water in the swivel housing (not that I should have water but it happens).

One thing I've learned from the people on this board is to do it right the first time..

You are right, I plan to fix it the right way. Just don't have the time right now. Want to do something to help, until I have time to fix it properly.

Tom,
Mine leaked for about a month before it could be repaired. Just keep it full with oil and it should be fine. You'll get use to the unique smell of 90wt oil! You can always hose off the areas it drips on once in awhile. Just be careful the first time you open the swivels as the bolts probably will be tight and easy for a wrench to slip rounding the square. Pretty sure I used a 1/2" open end that was just a little loose as I don't have many smaller metric.

Again - just don't let it go dry.

Jamie,

Thanks, did you use synthetic or standard oil?

I used the stuff from WalMart. 80/90wt and I think it might be a synthetic. Can't miss it and as you go through a fair amount of it depending upon your leak, cost effective and still gives you the protection you need.
