....or is that a contradiction in terms? With all the hoopla about gas gussling SUV's my question is: is there now or has there ever been a really fuel efficient environmentally friendly SUV or 4WD truck? |

Jerry, there are two questions in your post. - economical 4x4: how does this one appeal to you? i drove it for three days, all over the island. it had a 1 or 1.1 liter 4-cyl. diesel, pretty torquey although not really powerful. most "highways" on the island are 2-lane undivided (and too narrow to qualify for a real 2-lane, and often without the shoulder), so it made passing trucks and buses on the blind curves really exciting. Having such a short wheelbase, it felt really squirrelly at high speeds (speed limit on the island is 56km/h, i never had the little buggy over 80km/h or 50mph), so i doubt it could ever be highway-safe. it had a working A/C, though, very nice at 34 deg C and 100% RH. oh, and I've used a bit more than 8 gallons in three days. - speaking of the hoopla of gas guzzling SUVs, it's all pure bullshit. This country just can't come to terms of decent public transportation, under an assumption that everyone is entitled to freedom to move anywhere he/she wants at any given time. Well, to me it means driving my poor rangie like hell for 20 miles in ugly traffic every day, to fetch my kids from school. Because the city bus is a joke, and school buses only ferry in "ethnically challenged" kids from 20 miles away but not from our neighborhood. Will I settle for a lesser car? Not until I can't afford buying gas. The rangie was rear-ended 3 times this year, by some latte-sipping, cell-phone talking, etc. idiots, with not a scratch on the truck, and no harm to its passengers. Can't be said of the other parties. peter |

Dee I saw a VW Thing with straight axels with a V-drive and a blown big block running at a mud drag a while back. I gotta admit I thought it was pretty cool, even in the pumpkin orange color. |

PM, I drove the same Kia 4WD down in Caribbean last Fall. Really fun little rattle trap. I liked the boxy look of it, too. Funny little retro-looking thing. Kai, do you remember the print ad for the Brat where the horse was jumping the two Brats parked back to back? One of my old coaches trained the horse for that trick. He's dead now, and I guess so is the Brat (ugly little thing), but it was fun while it lasted! Karen |

Check out your local Subaru dealer. You can now get a 2003 Subaru Brat. Minus the rear seats, unfortunately! |
