OK. I've read a few posts on here where people are trying to get things done before MAR. Makes me feel good that I'm not the only one thrashing at night to get my "list" done. So let's hear it, what are you doing to your vehicle to have it ready for MAR. Here's my list;

Hoping to have swing away tire/can/jack carrier installed. Just faxed revised drawings back to shop so hopefully proto parts will be ready next week.

Enlarging wheel wells about 4". Found out that my new tires will be here the week before MAR. Originally they were coming the week after, so now I'm thinking "Damn, I might be able to get them on afterall".

Installing dropped steering arm and panhard bar. Trying to get rid of bump steer for 5 hour drive.

Removing factory roof rails 'cause David Gage is taking my low-profile Adventure Rack to MAR. That saves me a 5 hour drive to TN.

Overall inspection of suspension, but otherwise, that should do it. If I get half of this done, I'll surprise myself. Nothing ever goes as planned with me.

Greg,

Sounds like you are building a battle wagon. Enlarging the D2 wheel wells by 4"? Holy tin-snips Batman.

I am hoping to have my lights installed and that's about it. I am more worried about having enough beer and food....

Don't worry, my ARB will be stocked.

Beer and food, I will have some of that as well. 5 gal of english bitter, 5 gals of ale, a couple gallons of midland mild and maybe a bit (bit = gallons)of something else.

come by for a pint and a cigar.

I am adding sill protection to my sliders a'la
http://www.discoweb.org/slider/slider.htm

I am also adding equal to my tires and shackle mounts brackets to my front ARB (both from EE).

I am painting my new (used) British Pacific 1/2 roof rack.

Other than this, just a general service & lube.

I, too, will be lucky if I actually get 1/2 of this done. (But, am definitely getting the beer and food down).

It will be good to meet some of you guys and put a face with some names.

Hmmm, lets see here:

Finish bumper and new winch installation

R&R transfer case to replace parking pawl

Figure out why my brakes suck!

Move trans cooler and make new lines

Install ABS cutoff

New tires (maybe)

Finish installing new front diff

Replace front crankshaft seal

A few more midnight nights and I'll be done! (except it's getting hard to stay awake during the day) :)

At least the MAR has given me the needed impetus to finish everything (I hope)

Greg, what size tires? 35's? I'm not doing a damn thing to my truck before MAR. I might wash it and put on some touch up paint to make it nice and perty but, that's about it.

Well, if all goes as planned, here is what I will have done before MAR:

RTE sliders - going on at Johns on the 28th.
265-75-16 GY MTRS- went on last Tuesday.
D2 Roof rack - picking it up on this Saturday.
OME Steering Damper - installed a few weeks ago.
DIFF02 South Down front diff guard - ordered yesterday.
South Down rear diff guard - backordered till the 20th - my fingers are crossed.
4 IPF 950 Super Rally's on the roof rack front - laying in my bedroom now.
2 IPF J01's on the front bumper - ordered last week.
2 side work lights and 2 rear work lights - getting ready to order.
Switches and wiring galore........ I know what I'll be doing for the next few weeks.

Now, if I just had some money laying around for a winch and an engel....... :)

Greg - what are you going to do about the holes left by the factory roof rails?

I've wanted to get rid of those ugly ass things for awhile, but haven't come up with any easy solutions that a: don't involve bondo/painting and b: look OK

Dee was supposedly coming up with something, but I haven't heard anything in awhile.

Jack, no loans from Vinnie thank you. Can't afford the broken legs.... :)

Bill, why not just put some of those handy dandy flashing orange strobes up there in the holes left by the roof rails. Then you could be a qualified trail leader and stuff. And, with the flashing orange lights, I hear you get a rainbow sticker for your back window too........ :)

Greg D., you planning on doing some plowing or something with those tractor tires..... :)

Greg Davis (Gregdavis)
Posted on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 - 12:27 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Well, I've already paid for the XL's, but these will be my "weekend" tires. I'll be keeping my 285 Yoko's for my daily driving. Plus, I've always had a thing for those XL's. Must be the Camel Trophy wannabe in me.

Bill, right now I have my uncle in the UK getting some factory plugs for me. I ordered them through my dealer but they were not correct, so I'm hoping the UK ones will be right. In the meantime, I found some metal clip-in plug, put a small o-ring under them, and ran a small bead of silicone. Doesn't look great (they're OK, but not what I want long-term), but it will keep me dry until the others come in.

Greg P., geeze, you'll be busier than me. Good luck with all of that, especially your rack.

My new wilderness rack should be here this week. Getting that mounted is priority number 1. Massive beer run and I'm ready to roll.

Just when I thought the photo hype had died down and I could safely talk again. One of the cocks on the hill had to act up again.

Good news - I am having a blast at Culinary School and I have established "Porn Tuesdays" in my dorm room, Big Screen, Surround Sound, DVD, the whole bit. Last night was the premire - 6 chicks, 4 guys, and Hustler's Barely Legal #2 - The Cheerleader Scene. I won't get into details.

Bad News - I'm Broke, Cant do any Mods to the disco, Can't make it to MAR. (CIA charges for absences)

I won't be broke forever, in 20 months I'll be makin the buck thats when the real fun begins:

95 Disco 1 -

36" Goodyear MTRs w/central inflation and beadlocks
Danas and Lockers Front and Rear
Coil Over Suspension
SG Rear Bumper
Rovertym Sliders
ECR Flares
Laptop GPS
Custom straight pipe exhaust with 4 inch piping

I gotta do something to make up for missing MAR.

They are 9.00 x 16's. Some say 35", some say 36". I'm hoping they're 34", but I don't think that's the case. No heavy duty axles now, but they are in my near future, as are new R& P's. I'll just be VERY careful until then.

Finished the front and rear work lights but may change the rears aways from halogen "cateyes".

Added Rovertym sliders a few weeks ago.
Tomorrow the prototype of the detachable 1/4" aluminium diamond plate step for the sliders is to be ready. I'll have pics if it turns out OK.
There's a nearby small machine shop that is absolutely fabulous to go into and dream of all kinds of things to make.... brackets and clamps and steps.. Oh My!

Check/change brake pads... somethings squeaking and I think its them.

Wax/polish limb risers.

Install that damn rear axle breather that I've had for months.

Touch up the scratches on the rack floor and shovel bracket... its starting to rust.

Make rack attachable awnings.

I've been looking at that "Equal Air" stuff but I can't go to CA to get the "through the valve" installation. Does anybody install it on the East Coast or will anybody be installing Equal Air at MAR .... using that air driven injector device ?

Rob & Will, who are you getting your XL's from? And Rob, what size are you getting? Isn't 9.00 x 16 the smallest XL? I know the XCL came in 7.50's, but they were biased ply.

Hey while you guys have been busy getting your trucks ready we've been working on the trails. We've opened up three new trails west of the log bridge. Two trails with nice hill climbs that are off of the Old Ferry Landing Road and another that goes a long way along the river to a great picnic area.

See you there...

Yes Rob, head on down south. If you are worried about the rover, I'll be bringing 2 friends with extra tools and towing equipment. One has a house near Pearl's Pond and he's got welders and a shop just in case you decide to gas it up a hill again and almost flip your rig like last time.

Bill & Dee, here are a couple of shots of my roof plugs. I installed them at night, and was afraid of the results. But after looking at them in daylight, they're not as bad as I thought.

Plug 1

Plug 2

I used a metal clip in plug (avail from Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.) and an o-ring around the base of it. I also ran a small bead of silicone and then installed the plugs. In hindsight, since I used the silicone, the o-rings weren't necessary and would allow the plugs to sit a little more flush. I also scuffed the plugs and painted them semi-flat as they came chrome(!). Hope this helps.

greg i am getting mine from canada. the size will be 7.5 x 16

i dont know the difference between "XL" and "XCL"

i think michelin changed the name.

if you look on the website :

Michelin UK

you click on "XL" and you see that camel trophy looking tire.

if you search "Michelin XCL" on google, you will find links to tires that look similar.

what i am getting is old "XCL" tires i think, not the new and possibly improved "XL"

albert, all the money i'd be spending to go down and eat and party and potentially repair, needs to go toward restoration.

Greg P., the swing away will mount to my rear bumper. Cannot be fitted to a stock bumper becuase it wouldn't be able to hold the weight.

Eric, the XML's do indeed look sweet, but the smallest size is 325/85/16 (VERY wide 38's!).

Bill, have at it. Haven't had any rain here to test them, but the sealant should keep everything dry. Nope, no upgraded CV's, YET.

G Davis,

I did think about some off the shelf plugs but my anal nature to have things built like a brick shit house has lead me to this obsession with making my own desigined parts...

I will post the plugs Dan and I cooked up once there ready for sale. There made from T-6 Billet Alum Black Anodized and have a pass-through for coax or light wires it also has a o-ring seal. I did slap Dan around a bit last night and threaten to expose some previous dirt about him if he does not ship me a batch...

ok so I figure a 2 inch body lift, 5 inch custom springs, and 3 inch spacers should do it. With some cutting or ECR flares. D60s front and rear or portals. What gearing would you need to turn those bad boys? Would the poor little rover engine just die trying?

Greg Davis (Gregdavis)
Posted on Thursday, September 12, 2002 - 03:33 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Dee, let me know when they arrive. I'd like to have a look-see at them.

Greg P., never got it, but my carrier will be mounted to my rear bumper, but will also be attached to the rear door so that they will open together. That way I don't have to have a latch assy. Plus, it would be a PITA to have a carrier that opens seperately.

The cans will mount behind the spare, parallel to the rear door. The spare will be mounted up and to the P/S so as to not hinder departure angle or rear vision (as much as possible), and the jack will mount across the carrier between the cans and the spare.

Back to MAR prep....
My prototype RTE slider step is done.
1/4" diamond plate aluminium .....
It works great as a nonslip step and a seat... is light-weight and won't rust.... is strong enough to hold my 225 lbs .....near perfection.
Now I can get up to the rack much easier/stable from all around my truck.

Hey Ron, by "portals" do you mean portal axles?

As in from a Volvo or a Mog?

If so: DUDE YOU ROCK!

Ya, Eric, He means Portal axles.. I was kinda hoping he would have put them on the Disco though so that I can bug the hell out of him. I have some distant future things in mind for the Disco once I get a second car.

Yes volvo portals.

No I do not rock.

Eric, feel free to bug me if you wish.

Eric N - Mogs are neat, my neighbor has 2 ex-swiss 404s. Are you planning on a portal swap too? I think I read a thread about it on www.pirate4x4.com.

Ron - Take lots of pics! I can provide you web space if you need.

See you guys at MAR !

Eric, I'm planning some thing to get stronger axles under there. Portals are a thought among other things. I read the por board too. I want to get 35 to 37 inch tires under the Disco but, I know that at some point the upgraded alloy axles just aren't going to hold up to them. If you drive real careful they will probably last for a little while but, I would rather get some real beef under there so that I don't have to worry about it. Any ways, that's at least 2 years out since I'll need a second car before I do it.

Prepping for MAR? Don't forget the mental and emotional preparation. This is for all those roverites that are used to waving or flashing your lights at oncoming rover owners who do not wave or flash back. Be prepared to have other rover owners wave and or flash their lights back. This may cause a momentary shock to the system....so be prepared! To those who wave or flash their lights at me first....please forgive me if there is a delay in my returning wave....it's just the shock.....

Is there going to be a central time and/or location that all D-Webbers at MAR can meet up, etc? It would be great to put some faces with D-WEb posts. (any ideas, thoughts, etc?)Maybe a D-Web camp central? (nah, too cheesy I guess:-0)

Cheers,
Chris

All I know is that I'm going to be on the hill and should arrive around 1300 hrs. After that, I'm up for anything. Maybe we could have a evening meet up on the hill for cocktails.

"Maybe we could have a evening meet up on the hill for cocktails." Now THAT sounds like a great idea. I'll be there. Just look for Winston.

Here I am hung over after a great night and already we are talking about cocktails. After a night run in the trails is when I like to partake of amber beverage :)

As far as Prepping for Mar......I got brakes now, which is a good thing. I had better get busy if I want those lights on the rack.

Broke a brake line putting in heavier rear springs this weekend. Replacing that tonight. Also been tinkering with my tire carrier, but all the parts aren't back from the shop. Did get my roof rails off. So I think I'll be lucky to even get the 50% done that I first mentioned. Oh well, at least I'll be there!

you can't miss it. It will be big and silver and everyone will be looking at the exhaust pipe coming out the side of the rear driver side fender. Last time I was around every body had to come and check that out. You would have thought Greg had Britney Spears or the Olson Twins in his truck.. :)

Hey Folks,

I just ordered my South Down Front Diff Guard, but I can't locate the Rear Diff Guard. Anyone know where I can score one? Rovers North is on back order.....

Email me if you have any info....

Thanks Rob,

So far I have emailed Southdown, RN, and a few other contacts...no joy.

On another note, I just called 8 different places for Hella 4k's and they are turning out to be a bitch to get as well. Hopefully Ken will call me back with lights in inventory and I'll order 4 of those today.

Damn Mark, Very imnpressive!

Update on prepping for MAR;

Phil from Rovers North Called me today and stated they had one more South Down Rear Diff guard for my Pig. That is awesome customer service! Anyway, I ordered it and should install on Thursday. Tonight I changed the oil and installed the South Down front Diff Guard. All is well with the Pig :)

This weekend I start to play with lights. Ken from Susquehannah had the 5 Hellas I needed and they are delivered.

Sweet truck ?
Don't worry it has its scratches and has been in the mud, tight trees, and rocky fire roads of the GWNF and Uwharrie.

And ... yeah, almost everytime I'm refueling someone makes a nice comment about my truck. Just yesterday a guy stopped me at the pumps and asked me all sort of questions about his possibly buying a '97 for $10K. Of course, using my vast (haha) knowledge (gain mostly from DiscoWeb) I told him to get it checked over and some of the areas to look out for ..... I told him about MAR and that it is happening in a few weeks or so.....then he went and got into his little J**p which took a long time for him to start. I wish him the best of luck finding a good Disco... which he so badly desires and for now can only dream about while he endures his J**p.

By the way, I have more of those boxes... but I thought it might be a bit pretentious to put them on my new rear hitch-rack.... and for those wondering about what's in them.... absolutely noth'n ( for now ). Do you think I'm crazy enough to put that much stuff back there when I have that enormous roof rack? .... don't answer that...
