J.,
Sucks about the DII, but atleast you are looking at getting another Rover! As far as the 80's ones go....the big highlights are...87-88 have the 3.5 V8 and the manual locking centre differential, the '89 has the 3.9 V8 with the automatic locking differential. Some people say the the Borg Warner (auto-locking) isn't up to hard off-roading and big tires, others say it's no problem. For some reason it seems to be a big debate on many web boards at the moment. The added .4 liters makes a diffence in power and in gas consumption. So you will have to weigh out what you want. And there is the obveous, and some times not so obveous rust issues. Check the upper tail gate thouroghly, underneath all carpet, and look up from underneath. Also find out what leaks it has, and how bad they are, such as Heater core, oil leak, and power steering pump. These are kinda the normal things to look at.

yes, very good advice

also ABS starts in 1990 in most models except for the "hunter" editions. few around so pretty much consider 89 the last ABS free year

i think pre 86 models are all nuts n bolts. Thus making it easier to replace panels etc. Later models have spot welds... let me know if i am wrong.

Yep, they have all had coil springs, and they all have had disc brakes since starting production in 1970. As far as 86 and older goes, I would stay away, because they were not officially imported into the US, and parts can be difficult to get for them. So I would stick with '87 up.

I just bought an '88, love it. The 3.5 is kinda of underpowered for the size, but runs great. You just aren't going to win an starts on the line. But who cares, its a Range Rover. Anyways, I wanted to let you know about www.lrx.com, great place for looking at prices of used Rovers. Good luck.

Well, I have narrowed it down to a favorite.
Its a white 88 Rangie that has been severely modified (in all the best ways).
The thing is trail ready, to say the least and I hope to own it by the weekend.

Ill post pics when I get it.

thanks again, gang.
