About five weeks ago I moved to ATL thinking I would be able to save some cash and find a job. Well, I did both. My folks let me crash at their place free of charge (bonus) and I got a job in...DC. So, now that I am gainfully employed I must move to where the job is...Reston to be exact. Of course, I don't know much about that area and need a little help finding a place to live. Do any of you NoVA/DC Rover owners have any suggestions? I am looking for a reasonably priced single bedroom apartment, room, loft, etc. I realize "reasonably priced" is a relative term, so until I get a ball park estimate for cost of living I will rely on anyone else's experience. I would like to stay within 20 minutes of work in case that helps. All suggestion are greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, garage space. Does anyone have shop space that can be rented for repair, oil changes, etc?

Thank you,
Diesel

I'm in the NOVA area (just moved from Vienna to Chantilly) and it is expensive up here, just to warn you now. If you aren't too interested in going out to the city every weekend and are more worried about cost and having a decent place to stay, I would recommend checking out apartments in Sterling/Ashburn/Centreville area. That should put you no more than 20-30 min to work. But a single bedroom apt will still run you 800-1000/mo probably. A possible option, if you are brave enough, is to check out want ads in the paper for room to rent, might even be able to find a room in a house with a garage. That might only set you back like 600-800. Places that will put you 20-30 min from work (and might be affordable) - Reston, Herndon, Chantilly, Centreville, Sterling, Ashburn, Vienna, Falls Church. Let me know if you need some more info or help.

I'll second Robbie on that. It is expensive to live here. The 800-1000 a month isn't going to even get you a nice place. Housing around here is just crazy. As far as the garage goes.. I got a drive way I could let you use some times. Where in Reston did you get the job at? I work in Reston also.

Eric and Robbie,

Thank you for the housing information. $800-1000 was kinda what I was expecting to pay. Looks like I'll be back on the college diet again. :) Hooray beer and ramen noodles!

Eric,

Thanks for the driveway offer, I may have to take you up on that. Apartment management usually frowns on auto maintanance in the parking lot. My exact job location in Reston hasn't been given to me just yet, but I will let you know.

I also work in Reston and live in Loudoun County. Look into the places Robbie mentioned plus Sterling and maybe even Leesburg.

Agreed that it's expensive as hell here, but there are deals to be found. If you want to live closer to the restaurants, bars, etc., look towards Arlington. There are good deals to be found on group houses, apartments are expensive and hard to find in good locations that don't have the smell of cooking food in the hallways. I also have a driveway and will soon have garage space if you need to turn wrenches. Feel free to get in touch if you need help finding a place.

Best,

Tony

Tony,

Arlington would put me against the flow of traffic if I worked in Reston, right? What would you say the commute time is between the two in the morning and evening? I was up in that area this past weekdend and drove around a little. The traffic was hardly what I would expect it to be during the week.

For the most part it would put you against traffic, but it would still be a 40-45 min commute (depending on which bldg in Reston you're at). I lived in N. Arlington (off G. Mason and 29) and commuted into Vienna for a short time. Apartments in that area are pretty ridiculous though, and they are snatched up quick.

40-45 minutes is just too much. I think I will stick with a shorter commute. I have some leads on places and 800-1000 seems to be the going rate. The rent I can live with, but pet deposits are ridiculous...300-400 at most places. I guess I could just take him to the taxidermist. :) I'm kidding of course. Anyway, I am still looking. Thanks for the info fellas. If anyone else has ideas or an extra room, holler.

yeah, that is why I got a few buddies and got a house in Vienna. I have a dog, and the pet deposit was $500. You may want to just look in the paper for a room for rent in a house. Might be able to get a pretty good deal that way. Some people actually will have each room on an individual lease.

Re: the commute from Arlington to Reston, a buddy of mine (and Rover owner) lives in north Arlington (Washington and Wilson) and works @ AOL -- takes him about 20-25 minutes each way as it's against traffic. Not to bad considering it takes me an hour from South Arlington (Glebe and Columbia Pike) to downtown using Metro. To me, it's worth it being closer in to town for the restaurants and bars -- Reston feels a little too much like a strip mall wonderland to me, but then, nobodies ever accused me of being too smart.

Tony... who's this buddy of yours? I don't see many Rovers out in the lot in Reston other than a D90 and my own.

Al, his name's Brian Ricaurte, drives a white 94 '90 on 36" TSLs, though he doesn't drive it to work very much.
