I have an old utility/snowmobile trailer that was made by International Harvester (give you an idea of its age huh?). I'm rehabing it and came across the data plate under a coat of old paint. The plate says the trailer is rated at 1100 pounds. Can anyone tell me what that rating is based on? Is it the strength of the frame, the flooring, or the tires/axle? If I were to replace the present tires with a larger diameter or wider tire would that upgrade the rated capacity of this thing and allow me to carry, say 2000#'s ? And a second thought, I just returned from a 2200 mile road trip over to Indiana pulling the trailer and averaged 15 MPG. About what I get grocery getting around here. Go figure???? |

trailer rating is based on the rating of the axle/s under it. must be older then 1976...in 76 DOT adopted class system would have been 1000 or 1500lbs instead of 1100lbs |
