I get home last night and there is a credit card companies junk mail in my mailbox and guess who it's from... Rovers North.. They sold my name (I'm sure they sold more then just mine) to this credit card company.. Just wondering if I'm the only person that doesn't really agree with that.. I didn't tell them that they could. They didn't ask either.. Makes me wonder who else's junk mail lists that I'm on now due to them..

Yeah, I got the same thing on Friday Eric. I was wondering what the hell the deal was. Thought at first that maybe it was some type of deal. Ya know, where you use the card to buy stuff and it gets you discounts on Rover stuff. But that is not mentioned anywhere in the papework so I trashed it. I agree though, pissed me off. Hope they didn't go nuts selling our names.

they probably assumed that you would want them, doing you a favor.

i see no fault with rovers north. no where do they advertise that they won't sell your name. when you give them your name they can do with it what they like. so long as you don't tell them different.

be proactive and call your congressman and bitch about it.

(i guess you are pissed that i sold your email address to that penis enlargment company...)

The only thing that I did was ordered a part from them.. That makes it OK for them to sell my name and address to whomever they want so that they make money off me twice? Don't think so. I'm just going to start signing them up for junk mail..

Ha, funny, I was wondering why I was getting emails that said " Member Rob Davison followed our 12 step program and went from a rock hard 3 inches to 3 1/2 inches in only a year.. He wants the world to know that our program worked for him and it can work for you too.... blah, blah, blah".. :)

I would but, I don't want to give them my email address as then I'll probably get more junk email.. It also doesn't hold any weight to post anon.. I just felt like whining a little..

Yes I got one on Friday as well...I wasn't too comfortable about it either. But you know what I did with it? I threw in my treasure chest of Land Rover related material and items to show to my 9 month old someday.....

anything rovers north does will not come close to comparing with all the other places out there. you folks never recieve junk mail before friday? i think it sux, but jeeze, it is not like they are the first ones to do it. the answer is simple, don't buy from RN anymore. shit, most things are a ripoff, anyway.

Ya, I get a ton of junk mail.. I just figured places like Rovers North would be better then that.. Oh, and I only bought a tie rod end from them a year ago.. Guess they felt that they didn't get to rip me off enough..

Junk mail makes me wanna go postal. I cant stand it so one more thing sticking out of that box when I get home in the evening might just push me over the edge...:) I feel your pain Eric and I think you should start a thread on their BBS about it. I am sure others will chime in...

I don't think most people realize how valuable people's personal information and spending habits are. This information is very valuable and companies pay good money for it. One our old chapter 11 cases when I was praticing involved a firm that traded people's names and spending habits and other demographic information. If you guys knew what this information goes for on the open market, you would really be pissed off.

3-1/2" diameter, just wanted to clear that up.

no shame in liking the doors, garrett.

junk mail from an environmental stand point equals lots of paper that we all just throw away. the more paper, the less pretty land, and we are all fighting over who gets the pretty land with the trees on it and who gets to do what to it and on it.

i admit , the looser in me likes getting mail though. it's like free entertainment every day... and it's not a bill.

Ya, maybe I'll mossey on over to their BBS after work tonight and ask them why they thought that I wanted more junk mail from a credit card company.. Maybe they thought that they were going to help me go deeper in debt then I already am...

no fault with RN??? How much did you pay for your part? How much were they paid for selling your name, address, spending habits, credit card info, etc? Did RN send you a rebate check? Sounds like your typical cheezy bullshit second-rate company trying to sqeeze every last penny out of every opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if RN asked you to fill out a "product warranty information card" with question like "How much money does your family make? Besides buying Rover parts, what other shit will you spend money on? How many timer per week do you and your spouse have sex?" Someone who has been sold should go make noise on their own RN board. Return the favor and flood the RN board with SPAM. Social unrest! Peasant revolution! Anarchy! give em hell...

every day I get home, pull into the garage, walk out of the garage to the front door, grab a fistfull of mail, walk back through the garage, drop the majority of the mail in the garbage can because it's bloody CRAP. A while back I read where some guy saved all his junk mail from one year in the corner of his garage (sounds like something Rob would do) - he had an amazing amount of shit piled up (like 400 lbs or some crazy number). What a waste of resources and time.

Michel, depends on the quality of the leads, how qualified they are, how specific the demographics are, etc. Price is in pennies. I've seen lists for $50 per 1k names up to $350 per 1k names for very specific mailings.

If you're pissed at RN, and I will be if they send me crap, drop them a note telling them you're not happy, tell them to take your name off their for sale list, and tell them that if it happens again that you will no longer buy from them. They will either get the hint or lose the business.

Anytime you use your CC, get a credit check for a loan, etc., you're subject to this. I don't like the fact that RN did it, but I'd give them the chance to make amends and fix the problem before I black ball them.

Yo Rob - I imagine that not everybody can just stop what they're doing, put flowers in their hair, and march on Washington with you...hehehe Telling RN to "stuff it" changes the rules for RN rather then trying to fix the whole damn system from the top - baby steps, man...baby steps.

also, I'd prefer if you called in Ross Perot, although on second thought he'd probably take our info down and then sell it...

Michel,

"clue us in, how much money does a nice list go for on the open market...ballpark of couse."

I don't know the average prices and such, but the case I was involved in sold its databases of names, addresses, spending habits, income, etc. for more than half a million dollars. That was a liquidation-type price for a company in bankruptcy.

What's funny is that the companies go to great lengths to safeguard their information databases. Their databases even have fake names and addresses in them so that if these same names and addresses appear on someone else's database, they will know that the other company somehow pirated their list.

It's fairly common for retail outlets and other organizations to sell their customers' or members' names and other information to credit card companies and the like. These people usually try to get away with it by marketing the credit card as some kind of enthusiast's card. For example, the credit card company that RN apparently sold its customers' names to puts a pic of a Land Rover on the card to convince that customer that it would be neat to have such a credit card. My alma mater UCLA sells the information for her alumni. Every year, I get a credit card application for the MBNA VISA, which has a picture of Royce Hall on the front of it. And the PGA sells the information of its members to MasterCard, "the official card of the PGA", who tries to convince the PGA members to sign up for the "Titanium MasterCard". And so on.

It's all a total scam. All of these organizations make serious money doing this stuff, at your expense.

Fun thing to do with junk mail is to take their reply envelopes and get one of your other pieces of junk mail and then switch them so that you mail each place the other places piece of junk mail. I look at it has helping to keep postal workers a job.. And then the place has to pay for the privilage of getting some other piece of junk mail which keeps someone in the mail room a job too..

Ya, my dad got me started on doing that a long time ago.. It takes a few minutes out of your day but, I feel it is worth it as it is going to take a couple minutes out of someone at that companies day to open that "all important rush response" just to find out it is some other company's junk..

Companies due this stuff to make a little extra cash (or a lot). Also because it is easy - just upload the database. If you start sending them all of the crap you receive as a result of their mailing, then it stops being easy. It starts being really fricking annoying.

Sooner or later, someone who makes decisions and who is responsible, will look at the piles of crap and say - 'enough' and will stop selling the list.

If you really want a little attention - send it to the president - I am sure his executive assistant will inform him/her personnaly about how much time he/she is wasting opening up crap in his name.

Oh ya'

and lets try and do it all at the same time. If they get 100 pieces of crap mail in a week, that will get their attention faster than 2

For what it's worth, allthough we keep a record of who buys videos and stickers (we have to for tax purposes, in case we ever get audited) it stops there. That information will never be made available to anyone.

That's the best . I just couldn't wait to see my friendly mailman today , I was filled with glee to intercept the mail before it hit the recycle bin. Now I am recycling and keeping people gainfully employed . Along with the "card" offer I received an enrollment offer from Charlton H hisself and I don't even own a gun . Funny thing is I'm just a little left of Nader so I wonder if they'll mind some Amnesty International propaganda . HeHe . I'm not tryin to piss off all you red blooded gun toting right wing spoutin' people , just trying to share a little love .

"For what it's worth, allthough we keep a record of who buys videos and stickers (we have to for tax purposes, in case we ever get audited) it stops there. That information will never be made available to anyone."

Same with EE. When we first opened our website, we included on our "About EE" page the following:

"Confidentiality Of Customer Information. When you order from us, you give us your name, street and email addresses, telephone numbers, credit card information, etc. We will also have some insight into your buying habits from the amount of good you purchase from us. This information is valuable and very saleable. However, we keep this information strictly confidential. We don't sell it to junk mail distributors and telemarketers the way some of our competitors do. Rest assured that if you purchase a product from us, you won't get a solicitation for a credit card with a photograph of a Land Rover on it."

Believe it or not, even a small operation like EE has already been approached by some people asking for customer information.
