I have recently acquired a clicking noise and a clunck sometimes from the front axle right after replacing the hub bearings on one side. Also after I put on OME medium duty springs and Rancho shocks and 245/75 tires I have very bad steering. I can turn the steering wheel about six inches in either direction without the wheels turning which really sucks at highway speeds. So the clicking has got to be a CV, right? What about the steering? I was reading about the transfer box woes and read about a bad cv leading to transfer box and viscous coupling woes, do I have to look forward to these problems? |

Bryan If the body of your truck moves instead of the tires moving when you turn the steering wheel left and right when in park, thats a good sign that your pan hard rod bushings are worn out and need to be replaced. Adrian 91RRC |

Bryan: For the steering problem, have you tried thightening the steering box to remove some of the play you are experiencing? You should not have to move the steering wheel 6" either way to get the wheels to move. To thighten the steering box, loosen the locking nut on top of the steering box with a 19mm socket, I had to use a universal joint with a 20" extension and a 1/2" drive socket wrench to loosen the nut, and then use a 6mm hex wrench to thighten the hex nut. Thighten the hex nut till you get little to no play when you turn the steering wheel, and don't over thighten as you may cause binding in the steering box. |

the tie rod and track rod ends might need replacing to help remove the play, after the box has been tightened that is.. grab the tie rod at the ends and if you can move them easily they need to be replaced. DAP has nice replacements ends and "hevy duty' tie rods... |

Thanks guys, I will try that, what about the clicking noise, is that definitely a cv joint? |

Maybe pull it apart and visually inspect the CV, pretty straight forward diy.. sounds like a bad cv or you got some gravel in there when you did the hubs ;) Also make sure the big bolts holding the radius arms are tight front and back, that can add to the clunk factor.. http://www.yellowdefender.com/how_to_tips/c_v_repair/index.htm |
