This could be an even bigger problem. This is not good, probably explains why I can't get a new friggin' MAF sensor replacement.

If this is all true (I'm guessing this can be independently verified), then it will be hard to predict exactly what will happen. This is the action of a company that is desparately trying to cut expenses so anything goes, including tradition and the "customer", forget about the vehicles themselves.

Its true. Call your dealer for a DII serp belt, DI MAF, or anything for a freelander. Ford is a POS. Take Aston Martin, they had the "car for life" program where they gauranted parts for your life to keep your aston running, then ford came in and stopped it, despite the commitments Aston made to its owners.

Good thing that due to high prices of gennies the OEM market is strong.

Ya, but, I don't like the big 4 door G500 I like the little 2 door with the rear soft top. They still sell those new in the US?

Only Europa imported them. I would like to see the SWB G's come in too but the LWB isn't bad either.

Well I've been hearing the same blow by it looks to me that Ford is creating this shortage as an opportunity to bust up the UK to US parts food chain. I would also keep an eye on the larger vendors who will take advantage of this to jack the prices up to the same level as the dealers, and squish the lower priced vendors. Several of them can sit on 10mil or so inventory and charge what they like. Ok free enterprise at its finest. Ill bet you wont see more than five more years of Land Rovers

Ford Rover price fixing another reason not to keep buying the dam things.

Your prayers are being answered. A restoration/customization shop here in Los Angeles (TLC in Van Nuys) has built a number of prototypes for Toyota Motors in Gardena. The prototypes are being studied and may be in production by 2005, hopefully. Toyota has been listening to the enthusiast's wishes for a truck just like the old FJ40/45/55 etc.. and several years ago commisioned Jonathan Ward,owner of TLC, to build some updated versions of these trucks, which he was already doing as custom trucks for his customers.

See www.tlc4x4.com, conversions, photos. There are some very cool trucks there, FJ 45 double cab, extended FJ 40, restored FJ 45 wagon....

Someplace like Moss Motors will start making reissue parts if they do discontinue them but there might be a little bit of a gap where there aren't many available for a while.

I hope this is speculation or something like the Diff lock. I hope they wont stop making parts.

It will be the same as the MG market there will still be parts but it will fall to the aftermarket industry to pick up the slack... yep that 350 crate motor is looking better each day..

What am I missing? Why would Ford spend good cash on LR and then turn around and essentially shut them down? Is it a calculated risk that they're taking on?

Can't be competition. Did they want the technology? Certainly, that could have been stolen or reverse engineered.

Gotta be something else going on.

It's pretty simple, really. Make it as hard as possible to own an old car, so you will get rid of the old one and buy a new one instead. It's all about selling new units, regardless of brand.

If thats the case then it's VERY short sighted. Seeing old cars on the road is a great way to sell new ones, IMO. At least BMW sees the value in this and they have incentives for Geniune parts for the "vintage" vehicles even when there are lots of after market part makers. I don't think FORD will be stupid enough to top selling parts if there is a market. They might be trying to increase the dealer market by "keeping tighter control of the parts network."

got e mail from Atlantic British they said that Rover was just changing thier "distribution" in the US. I am more worried about this than war with Iraq

Since when did US big businesses look beyond the next two quarter returns? I don't think it too wise to ignore the parts chain either, but let's face it, US car manufacturers are mainly concerned with pushing new units out the door.

Yep, but in light of this many many many of the repair parts for Range Rovers and Discos are made in the US and then shiped back to the UK and then wraped in a green box and sent back here. Stores like AB who sit on 10 mil of inventory will have the moxy to get the parts made but the cost of poker will go up... Yep looks like a FJ40 restore might be starting soon

Maybe it is just wishful thinking but as much as these freakin trucks break I have pretty good hopes that the aftermarket industry will pick up the slack fairly quickly. I just cannot see Rover making parts for these things forever especially now that ford has a hold of them, as Axel pointed out). In my opinion Moss Motors is the best bet, they currently do parts for MGs, Triumphs, Jags, and Healeys so they have experience with British auto making and pre-laid connections to the British auto scene even though we seem to be it's bastard step-child.

Well be careful what you wish for, in reality there will be fewer bargains seen in replacement parts industry. Look at Alantic British's pricing there the US leaders, Ill bet there prices jum 30 to 40% if this plays out. As for me and my .Biz I’m building alternative part solutions and upgrades to fix the many shortcomings our Land Rovers seem to develop shortly after the warranty runs out….

Can you put a 350 crate motor in a Disco or D-90 and keep stock transmission and t-case etc?

LOL! They don't bolt up, you'd have to fabricate an adaptor or change the bellhousing at a minimum.
