Welcome to the world of REAL beer. Just be warned: drink it enough and that dud light shit is going to become nothing but watery horse piss.

ok Say you drink Guinness and get really shit faced.

1. will you have a terrible hangover (considering that off bud light i have little if any hangover)

2. Will your stomach feel heavy

How many have yall drank at a time and what are your thoughts

i can drink bud light all night and get really shitty but i drink like 20 or so

i'm just wondering if i only drink 8 of these (if i can even handle 8) will it have the same feel of drinking 20 bud lights

My fav is the Black and Tan

Guinness and Bass...

But I think it's the Bass that gives me trouble... isn't it short for "B"ad "ASS?" I always have GI trouble after 3-4 Black and Tans.

I'll second the black and tan.

Black and Tans are great. But nothing compares to getting a Guiness in England that is actually "pulled"

Got to have a few pints every time I go over to England

Half and Half isn't bad either. Guinness and Harp. Love the new widget rocket bottles. No funny can taste.

A few things about Guinness:

1) Don't ever mention Guinness and England in the same sentence, it's just not safe to do so! Remember, it's an Irish Stout, not made by the folks that make the Rover.

2) It's near impossible to get shitfaced on Guinness! With low alcohol content (4.2%) and a very filling texture, you will bloat and float before you get woozy! (BTW, at only 10 calories per ounce it is less fattening than Skim Milk!)

3) If you drink Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, horse-piss light, whatever, well, that's your own problem, but please don't refer to it as beer! It's just bottled water.

4) It takes just under 2 minutes to pour the perfect pint of Guinness, 119.5 seconds to be exact according to Guinness.

5) If you are lucky enough to be served Guinness by a skilled bartender, you might note that he/she has drawn an Irish Clover in the head with the tap. Consider this a sign of good luck and good fortune.

I don't much care for the black and tan thing, but then I don't like Harp either, and not a big fan of Bass ale.

There are about 5 flavors of Guinness, I think 4 are available in the US.

1. Guinness draught in the can
2. Guinness draught in the bottle
3. Guiness Extra Stout in the bottle
4. Guiness imported from England. (This one is rarre in the US and uses different water than the Guinness we normally drink
5. There is also a Guinness exported to Africa only that I have never tried.

There is a taste difference between the first two on the list as some have noted, and neither exactly mirrors the taste of Guinness from the tap. I probably have about a quart of tap guinness a week and about a half-gallon of the bottled draught. If the bitterness bothers you, try to find Murphy's Irish Stout. It's smoother and less bitter than Guinness and originates from Cork, Ireland. The phrase "happy hour" is derived from an accident at the Murphy's brewery back in the early part of the 1900s.

Beamish also produces and Irish Stout aka dry stout. It's pretty good but Guinness and Murphy's dominate the market.

Nothing gives you the feeling of drinking American light beer swill. That stuff is horrible. Start educating yourself to the ways of other countries brews like English Bitters (not bitter) or Belgian Abbey Ales like Chimay. If you prefer light tastes, try Hooegarden or a Heffe Wiezen (wheat beer).

Enjoy!

I've been told that a real Guinness conosier(sp?) can tell where they are in Ireland based on how the Guinness tastes at the local.

1. Well there is a pub I always goto in ENGLAND that serves GUINNESS and along with a place in GERMANY that serves GUINNESS also.

2. I am lucky my travels in my work send me that way.

3. I wish I would get a chance to have a pint in a pub in Ireland.

4. I never made the remark that it was made in ENGLAND and any fan of GUINNESS knows that. DUH!

5. Having a pint in England that is pulled is Definitely better than having one here in the States.

6. Have you tried the Guiness Foreign Extra Stout or the Guinness Special Export. 7.50% and 8.00% You can get shitfaced on that. but it is oh so good!

But no matter what the fact I would still buy anyone from discoweb a pint anyday.

Cheers!

1) Nothing is better in England than in the USA, absolutly NOTHING. (I lived there for 5 years, went to an English "public" school (boarding school), and travelled pretty extensively there. Give me the US of A anytime. Sure, England is interesting, pretty, cultural, everything, but it's the USA that I long for.)

2) Guinness in Ireland is brewed in only one place, at St. James's Gate in Dublin, in fact, all Guinness Draught Stout, domestic and export, is brewed in St. James's Gate Dublin, Ireland. If it tastes different in different parts of Ireland then it is likely a function of how often they clean the taps. (In the USA the health department insists that draught beer taps be cleaned daily.)

3) How many countries is Guinness brewed in?
Different Guinness variants (Guinness Extra Stout, Foreign Extra Stout) are brewed in 50 countries around the world. However, all these overseas brews must contain a flavored extract brewed at St. James's Gate in Dublin, so the very special brewing skills remain at the heart of every pint, but ALL Guinness Draught Stout is brewed in St. James's Gate Dublin, Ireland.

I'd be delighted to buy a pint for anyone in the Discoweb too!

chistopher. yes. a car bomb. very nice indeed. one of the best shots you can get. well if you can call it that. tastes too damn good to be a shot. haha.
i was in ireland last year and they had a 'cold' version of guinness for us americans. but then again they love Bud over there. ugh.

cold version of guinness? What does that mean? Guinness is supposed to be served cold. Read the bottle.

Rans. Thanks for posting the St. James's gate info before I got to it. As you say, if it tastes different around the Eire, it's just because of the taps.

Some of the folk here might want to look into the Michael Jackson (not THAT Michael Jackson) guide to beers. It's fascinating and updated every so often. I got my first one about 8 years ago and haven't looked back.

I always keep a few Guiness in my fridge. Most of my friends don't like em, so I keep some other stuff in there, too.
I always buy the longnecks with the "Widget" in them.
There was actually an article in Popular Science about a year ago about how it works.

Paul will probably get a pint before most of you, only because he will be at my house one of the next few weekends with some of the other Eastern Pa. Rover folks making believe we are gathering to install sliders, but really just gathering to slurp beer.

Where are you Bluegill?

Hi-
Maybe I missed it in an earlier post but have any of you had "Speckled Hen Ale"? A fine brew I might say! IMHO Guinness is certainly best on a fresh tap, the can with the draft thingy inside does it no justice. I have tried to convert my many relatives to these great beers but they are stuck in the "Keystone/Coors" world and I have decided there is no hope. Hey I tried!

i feel fine
though i only had 2.

i had to study some Cal 2 last night so I limited myself to 2.

This might be offensive but i'm still a Bud light drinker, but hell i'm in college so i'm aloud to drink bud light because the meaning of drinking in college is to get completely fuxored!!!

but that won't be the last Guinness

There was a really cool Guinness only bar in London near Oxford Circus I think. Went there on my honeymoon and found the place down a back street in London. Everyhting is Guinness, from the stools looking like a pint of the black stuff to the drinks always having Guinness and some other interesting liquid (champagne, Harp, Bass, Absynthe, etc)....Only wished we would have found it earlier in our trip.

They also had Guinness Extra Cold in EVERY pub we went into. The wife liked that, give me the room temp version anyday!

Perrone-

If you cross the pond, you'd find that they serve pints of Guinness at room temp.

I don't believe it's actually room temperature but cellar temperature. There was a long drawn out debate about this on the LRO list a year or so ago. Some people get worked up over one or two degrees off the "proper" temp. I prefer the cooler side for sure.

Craig,

Which pond should I be going to? It's my understanding that at St. James' gate, they serve the beer at it's proper temperature, despite what the English may like. Personally, I enjoy ALL my beers at the same temperature. DAMN COLD! Personal preference for sure, but the beers that I drink all have higher than normal (US) alcohol contents so they don't freeze at 32F like the swill. This means I can keep my beer at 30F and it stays perfect. Damn near takes your breath away when you drink it. Perfect for those days here in sunny Florida when it's 95 in the shade with 90% humidity.

perrone - you said it. that's why coldbeer is one word . . . . and i only use frosted mugs. gotta love the small crystals of iced guiness that form on the top after filling it up.

i'll second a vote for Murph's - but really i don't buy much of either, sticking mostly to the the local porters and ambers.

Obsidian Stout, Black Butte Porter, Anchor Steam Porter (mmmmm), and while not a porter, equally tasty dark beer - Nightwatch from Pacific Maritime.

then you've got Mac 'n Jacks Amber (only on tap - the best), Alaskan amber, and I like Full Sail's amber pretty well, too.

damn. I'm thirsty, and it's only 4:13 a.m
