I need a bit more help please. I was told by a LR tech that the intake gasket on my 92' RR is leaking oil heavily. I certainly saw the leak but was unsure of it's origination. I would like to do the repair myself. However I am busy, so if I put if off for a while and just keep adding oil would I do any damage? I am also curious how much of a job it will be and if anyone out there has done this? I can't seem to find anything in my Haynes Manual so I will get a LR Service manual hopefully soon. I really am unsure where to start. Anything on the web I could look? Thank you in advance, this is a great BBS! |

Haynes should cover it as part of top overhaul, doing heads etc. Leaking there may also cause your idle to hunt. Dont think it will cause other harm, unless it starts to leak water as well as oil. Mine is doing it for the second time now (97 Disco), but just weeping slowly. jp |

I just did a head gasket change on my 88rrc (120K)and replaced the intake gasket. It is not a hard job but requires the removal of the plentium chamber, etc. and takes alot of time. The biggest part of the job is making sure you label, mark and baggie everyting. I also took digital photos if I had questions later. Look on page 1-9 of the Haynes manual. Note that if you are leaking oil on the intake manifold it is often the result of pressure building up in the engine. You may have blown head gaskets or a blocked oil passage. If you are getting that far into the engine you may want to consider replacing the head gaskets as well as doing a valve job. I have been told valves usually need to be done around 80K. I did the job myself, my rig was apart for about a week. I took it apart on one Sat. had the valves done at at machine shop, and put it back together the next weekend. Total cost... $129 for the engine kit, $250K for the valve job. You can keep adding oil to keep it going, but the leak is most likely sign of bigger problems than a bad gasket. This must be going around, as my '87 RR just started leaking in a big way this weekend. It's coming from the rear of the "valley seal" under the intake manifold. Mine is bad enough I've parked the truck until I have time to deal w/it. John's right--it's a biggish job and likely indicates other problems. This has me considering swapping out my tired 3.5 for a new 4.6, rather than put more time and money into an engine that isn't what I really want. (dreaming of a 360 bhp 5.2 from RPI Engineering ~8-)) Kevan |

When I took my 3.5 apart the cam, lifters and rockers were all worn. (Like the BAD photo on RPI's web site!) I'm sure the timing chain is in bad shape. I too wanted a new engine, but I can't put more money into my rig due to the rust bug. If you are considering a new engine, be sure to check out www.eastcoastrovers.com or www.robisonservice.com. Last I heard, John Robison could get a new 4.0 short block for around $1500. Bolts right on your transmission. You can most likely use the anciliaries from your engine. At least do your valves, gave alot of power back to my rig. Good luck, keep dreaming. |
