Wow! I had the most amazing time. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet everyone I wanted to or really spend time with many of you but I will know better next year. Since we arrived late Friday night we basically came in and set-up camp and headed for bed. Saturday was confusing (and HOT) as we didn't know which way to go first to watch the events. Ivan already said that next year we are going to bring his 4-wheeler so we can ride back into the tough trails and watch people make it through.
I only did the two 'easy' trails on Saturday just to try them out and had fun watching people play in the river and mud...even saw the Freelander with the broken CV joint and watched George in the RR (EE vehicle) yank her up the hill. That sound will forever haunt me..the "clank clank" that it made limping along! And by the time we were finished watching all of that I was exhausted from the heat and we headed for camp around midnight.

Sunday, however, was a different story. I set out to see the early morning events and ended up oversleeping...then finally met gp and Glenn and chatted for a bit about getting some more mud on my girl. (Great to meet you guys by the way!) Saw Leslie and the family(:)) and then decided to head out for a few more trails. Did the Lake Loop again then came back for the Powerline trail....here's where the fun part starts.

We headed down Powerline and as I was taking my time engaging the CDL another stock Disco from Maryland came up behind me...we let them go first and followed. These people were so nice and I'm soooo glad we tailed along as he was very careful and helped to show me what to do. We finished the powerline trail and I was getting really pumped...we came out on the road between the causeway and the house and then looped around to do the Hill Climb. That was great! After that, they said they were going on a trail that looped to a picnic area (?) so, believing that "I can do anything he can do...we're both stock" I followed. As we are heading through I see the sign marked "Log Bridge Trail" and comment to Ivan "I don't think I'm supposed to be doing this one! Where are we going?!" but we continued on. I had NO TROUBLE until we came to the "deep hole" part where we all stopped and got out to survey the passing. Now, at this point, I knew that I would take the bypass part (although I didn't know it would lead to the same water crossing I had seen the previous night), but they were wanting to try to get through the hole since they had done it the day before. As we watching him head down into and then proceed to get STUCK in sinking mud and sand...I started to get worried. Amazingly enough...(insert heroic music here)...a Defender came around the corner and following him was a lifted Disco (98 Hoos-I never got ya'lls names!). SAVIOR! They winched him out and then proceeded to try one at a time. Well...no one made it through without the winching, but it was fun to watch them try. Then when we came around to the water drop...I really thought I would pee in my pants! I could NOT foresee doing THAT in MY TRUCK having only the trail experience of a few hours. But the more experienced people went first and helped to guide me down. That first sink into the hill and mud...when my truck made a creaking sound on the left hand side was enough to get the bllod flowing but she did so well! We cruised down and into the river and I remembered to start breathing again at the bottom! After that we finised by going up the steep hill which was really fun (sticking that nose up into the air is pretty exciting I must admit) and we were done. After all of that, I was exhausted! I don't think I've concentrated that much for that length of time since I was a kid!! But I could actually say that I had done some pretty tough stuff! The only damage (that I am aware of so far) was a rub on my right running board that was already a bit dented but now a bit worse! Ivan is going to take them off for me this weekend and I'm already making my Christmas list for accessories!!

Enoch Snyder was camped next to us and we had a chance to ride with him and Chris right before we headed out and when we headed STRAIGHT DOWN into the river off the "E" trail and slammed the bumper and winch into the mud floor, well, I have to admit I was actually scared for real! That was incredible, but his truck pulled out and we waded a bit before he washed her down. I'm not sure I'll ever have the balls (yes, I know that's a worthless phrase) to do something like that even if my truck is that rigged out, but it was awesome!

So, where does all this rambling lead? It was a great time; I'm so glad I went (although a bit stiff today); it was great to meet all of you, and I LOVED driving my truck through the woods and the mud and getting her dirty. Now that the wheels and tires are all the same color as the body, I think she looks great! And I'm going to enjoy it for a day or two before washing her off! Ivan has already started talking about buying a cheap Rover of some sort that we can work on and start modifying and I'm so glad he has 'seen the light!'

Thanks to everyone who spotted me out and said hello. I was a bit star-eyed seeing that many Rovers in one place...but it was good to put faces with names: Paul, Jason, Leslie (+family), gp, Glenn, Camille, Colin, Enoch, Snyder, Cartner, Ron (+puppy, but I never saw Alyssa), Eric, and more. I did see a few other trucks I recognized, like Neal's and "Winston" but I never matched owners.
So, when's the next event?! I can't wait to do it all again! :) :) :)

Ya, you drove by me Saturday afternoon while I was walking up to go talk to Greg Davis from the vendor area but, I didn't put two and two together till you were already a good distance away and I saw your plates. Never did see GP either.. Just kept missing him. Oh well, maybe next time.. Ya, that drop into the river got a little more fun once some people dug out the bottom of it climbing up it.

i am so elusive. haha. good to hear you had a good time. didn't see eric or enoch though. i had a pic for you enoch. i think i did see erics truck though. damn.......just goes to show how big the event is. and the traffic on the trails was not too bad. happy about that.
next events for me are just local events. do you have a local club sus?

Susanna, nice to meet you and Ivan. Glad you could play around a little Sunday morning. I'll have to admit, after BACKING up that river bank three times to bust my front end loose I was a little nervous, too! Of course I couldn't let it show...
Al Hang, et al, nice wheeling Saturday night. I think I'll trade my Co-Ops for some Michelin street tires! :-)
Glad everyone survived, always good to match more faces to names.

I think maybe the Blue Ridge Land Rover club would be considered local Garrett...but I'm going to look into it. If anything, atleast now I know some people from Charlottesville and Roanoke that I can contact!

Enoch-glad you kept your composure!! Didn't break anything did you?!
I'll email you about that brush guard, I definitely want to get it. I just have to find a weekend between work travels to make it over there!

Enoch I hate those tires... but wait till you see the next set after a "small" drivetrain upgrade. I swear driving behind those earthmover tracks left by your tires was a little embarrassing.

Hey Susannah,

I saw another post with your plate # on it. I followed you out of MAR on Sunday late-afternoon. (You took a right onto rt15, I went left.) I was in a Blue DII w/ VA plates SKYDVE1. I was telling my wife 'I know someone posted a msg w/ that plate #' , but I couldn't figure out who.

I was driving south on I81 Sunday afternoon and passed a bunch of Rovers heading north, somewhere around 3:30 just south of Carlisle....I saw a Red d90 with another darker colored one, then 2 different RRs kitted out, and then a lone Disco, dark colored, lifted, some kinda front bar....anyone know who any of these folks were? Wish I'd been there.....next year I hope!!

man, sounds like you guys ahd a blast. i had to miss the event because i had no one to dog sit for me, and i'm kinda broke too. :( maybe next year.
Susannah - i still think it would be cool to get the Lynchburg people together for dinner, or maybe even a ride somewhere local if we can find a good time. at this point the only person i've really met on the board drives a G-Wagen (Camille). figures. :P

Mantaray,

You should have brought the dog! You could have done it on the cheap, too... Just register, and pay for the gas... skip eating for a few days, or mooch... there was plenty of beer around...

Enoch,
I saw the WV TROUT on the island near the Boggs' "plantation" but since I didn't see anyone out and about, I didn't stop .... didn't want to wake you from your nap.
I spent the weekend with some Hagerstown, Md folks and Mike Noe (& Connie, of course) ... Had a great time!.. They are very good folks.... much like yourself ... to Wheel with.... they have winches !... and they didn't encourage me to get "stupid" on the trails... but did help me get to the next level(3?).

Mantaray, L'burg people,

Im still up for dinner or beers sometime. Sounds like MAR was a blast. I knew it would be. I had one friend who went (SIIa and newer rangie) from the area. Another friend and I contemplated, but never motivated.

Anyway,

Leslie - my dog is a hyper fluff monster. she's half husky/half german shepard and is trianed to an extent, but she doesn't mind well enough to take her to a camp ground. she also sheds a ton so the inside of my disco would've been white by the end of the weekend, not to mention how dirty she would have gotten. it was too much hassle and if i had gone, i would've wanted to relax. maybe if i get her trianed i will next year. As for money, well i would've been pressed just to get gas. i couldv'e mooched for food, but i don't drink beer, so that wouldn't have helped. i guess i shoulda showed up for at lest the day on saturday, but oh well..

James and L'burg people - i'd be up for something maybe thursday night. dinner? i'm kinda busy tuesday and wednesday.

Thought I would check in from Dallas.....

I ordered the Trek Outfitters rear bumper and a set of 762 rears for the pig today. Hopefully, I'll have all of that delivered and installed before I leave for England on the 19th. As far as what's next; who knows? I am looking forward to hitting some trails with all of those nice folks I met from North Carolina when I go home in November.

Thanks again ROAV for a wonderful event.

I don't think you should take it so bad, actually.... you can find someone who's a bit more, hmmm... maybe refined, I think... she struck me as if she felt out of her element there, actually... I dunno, I only met her for a sec, hard to say, that quickly, but, I could picture you with other people easier....

Anyway... keep fishing!

it's all cool. i just liked working on her truck. gave me lots to do on the weekends. guess she will have to figure out how to 'flip' her tire carrier around so she can fit that big spare on there. hehe.
i did get a nice wave and smile from a girl (psu student) in a D1 the other day. :)

Oh boy! Look what I started and then abandoned! Sorry to everyone, I've been on a business trip to the land of cotton fields and peanut farms (AKA: Southside, VA) and my computer decided not to cooperate. I've been going through DiscoWeb and Rover withdrawl since the Rally!! I only spotted two other Rovers on my trip!! How sad!

Okay, Tommy, I saw your truck a few times during the weekend and my fiance commented on your plate. I remembered your post about the accident you had in your other Disco and wanted to chat with you. Sorry we missed each other! Hope you and all had a great time!

Mantaray-I'm sorry you missed it. Was a fantastic time (obviously). We took my dog and she did really well...even rode with Enoch during that 'river dive!!' But it is a bit of a pain to have to take them everywhere...it was too hot to leave her at the campsite when we were out on the trails. She's gained some valuable experience though! Since I just returned last night, we definitely won't be meeting up this week...but maybe some time next week? I'll be in Mon-Friday. Then I'll be out of town for almost 5 weeks recruiting! Let me know what works for you and James.

Gp-sorry to hear about your struggles...hey, if I wasn't engaged...well...umm....:) Maybe I can find a friend for ya-- Or hey-I've got a sister that's 30!!!

D1 women are, of course, the best! :)

Somebody let me know when there is another Rover trip in the near future, though my schedule hardly allows time to even DRIVE my Disco much less play with her!

Garrett-
What goes on at Assateague? I'm trying to find some wheel spacers for the front of my truck to help with turning radius for the trials. (Help compensate for the Detroit, which doesn't let the truck turn quite as much.) If I can get the spacers, I'll probably come to Robesonia...

I'm probably going to head up to the Robesonia to watch the trials. I'm not sure what time I'm going to get there so I'm not going to sign up to run them.

robesonia should be good. from what i was told it will be the most technical yet. should be a nice day in the woods.
assateague is just a 'get together' with the ROVERS folks. nothing too exciting. just camping on the beach, then driving around on the beach and watching out for wild ponies. just another excuse to do something outside that is all.
spacers? are there not a few places that sell them?
maybe kyle will make another guest appearance. then again maybe he won't.

Congratulations everyone...you have now convinced Ivan that he needs a Rover!!! He says, once we are married (next June) and get a house-hmmm is that important?, then he wants to look for an early 90s RRC (preferably white) to 'outfit' and play with off-road!! Something inexpensive that we can work on. YEAH! And of course, my Disco will eventually get 'tougher' though she impressed me quite a bit already! :) :)
