Part 2 as part 1 got archived From last post Posted on Friday, February 13, 2004 - 09:58 am: Tuesday morning I went to the guy that services my D1 and then went for a ride with his Advantage display hooked to Plug wire 6. We had some misfires under long load. Did that twice but no check engine light. Moved it to wire 4. It did not misfire BUT we saw a complete dropout of firing voltage for a few milliseconds and the CE light came on. Mechanic had measured the primary resistance of each coil and they were a bit below what was listed, but that was on all of them. Owner of the business has a friend with a 96 D1 and will ask him if the next time he is in can we swap the coil pack to mine and try it. So the friend with the 96 disco was in and said "try my spark coil" Swapped it, basically the same symptoms. Funny but it seemed as if the misfiring under load was not as strong, but the CE came on under long up hill load. Any other suggestions? Could it be crank position sensor? ECU (hope not). Wiring? Only happens with a long up hill pull and after 30 - 45 seconds you can start to feel it and the speed might come down a little, shifts to 3rd and if you let off the gas so it goes to 4th and give it gas while in 4th, the miss is quite heavy. Plugs and wires recently? What type of plugs if so, if not change them as well as your wires. Also possibly VSS. |

Same problem 96 Disco. I also seem to have misfiring at idle on a hot day. I thought that it may be the coil pack as well but haven't had an opportunity to swap it. I'm going to change my plugs soon - my wires are new magnecore. My fuel pressure is fine, I was also thinking fuel temp sensor? Who knows I've been dealing with this for several years as well. |

I just realized that mine misfires worse when I am low on gas. Anybody else experience this? What could cause this? |

New wires and NORMAL plugs. None of the fancy ones Additional work we did. The mechanic/owner sprayed a combination of 2 chemicals into the intake plenum while idling. One is the BG intake cleaning system Suspecting carbon or a buildup of something. Before spraying he made sure intake/exhaust valve on #6 were closed and sprayed some of the BG44K product onto that valve and then let it sit, soaking and disolving anything. It may be better. I've Been too busy to really push the long load at 50 - 65 mph up a hill. Further update coming soon. Carver |

Well.... It IS better. Maybe not perfect but the strength of the misfire is less. No check engine yet. I'll be pushing it up that LONG HILL again tomorrow, Wednesday. Carver |

96 Disco same problem. Cold start in morning seems worst, but will misfire anytime. Tried: Fuel system cleaner Injector cleaner Magnecor wires NGK V groove plugs Champion plugs Premium fuel (noticably better, but still misfires a bit) Codes read misfire on #4 & #6. Got a coil pack from LR with one bad coil for $0.00 Will be swapping in a known good one for the affected cylinders next. This thing seems like finding a cure for the common cold. |

I ran two cans of Sea Foam through the intake while idling. Several times I poured enough to shut the engine down and let it sit for 10 minutes. Lots and lots of smoke. Seems to be misfiring much less. So - I guess I've got a valve issue. I may pull each plug and spray Sea Foam into each cylinder & turn the engine over with no spark. |

I just read this thread...and I know I will draw criticism but I had a similar experience with my former 98 disco. After hearing from a mechanic that it would cost $2700 for head work, I reverted back to the old consistancy attempt. I'm usually consistent when it comes to fuel. I went out and tried different brands. For some, STRANGE, unknown reason, Shell premium came out on top and the misfire either went away or was very minimal. As soon as I would try different gas 3 or 4 tanks later, it would come back. Go back to shell...minimize. Certainly other vehicles I have had never demonstrated this, but it was true with my old diso. I now have a series II and I can't say I've noticed a difference using different fuel brands. Still, I try to stay consistant. |

I don't know if this will help but I had my '96 worked on and they needed to pull the plenum chamber off. When they did they noticed that it was sealed with only silicone. The mechanic thought that there should be a gasket there so he just put everything back together without resealing it. He told me upfront and it was idling at startup very rough. After finding out that it was supposed to be siliconed tight he redid it and it idles fine. So to make a short story long, , maybe you have lost a good seal on the chamber. My 2 cents on another thing to check. Ken |

That kinda makes sense, Ken. I pulled mine to change an injector. I wasn't sealed, so I put on some liquid gasket. I pulled it again to change another injector and didn't seal it. Maybe I'll pull it just to seal it and see what happens. Shawn...Let us know if it helps. Dave...I also nitice it running better with Shell, and my mileage improves. |

I think it is getting interesting! After my mechanic did the three chemicals, it was better. Added the 3000 plus stuff yesteday ( march 18th) and will drive it some more. I have an Audi 2002 A6 2.7 and it runs find on Costco premium, as does the 96 LR disco. We are at 6000 feet altitude. No knocking etc. The mechanics wife drove it before they gave it back to me, went up the same hill, 4th gear OD, without kickdown, and she said there was no miss. The next day I did the same thing and no miss. then we put in the 3000 Plus stuff and we shall see. it is better! |

Lets see, last post was over a week ago and I am still running on the tank with the 3000 stuff. It is definitely running better. maybe a little "rumble" Friday the 26th, no check engine light. I let it go for a while yet and see what happens. Carver |

Its the fuel pump. There are two pickups on your pump. one for 1/4(ballpark) or more over and one for 1/4(ballpark) below. the flap on the pickup for the below has a tendency to break and will cause "misfire" like issues. |
