well i am poor and want a locker. we have six diffs from wrecks. so i will weld one of the diffs up to try out the poor mans locker. what can i expect besides being locked in the rear. is the truck not going to turn, or is it only going to chirp on cornors? is welding the diff hard on other components? like half shafts. is this one of those dumie questions! anyway any thoughts . open for some bashing here.

oh, man are you asking for it

no really, people have done this and the results were really consistent, the axle shafts or the gear set goes really fast.
unlike a "no-spin" (DT) locker, welding prevents freewheeling around corners. most people recognize this as the clicking or ratchetting that a Detroit makes around corners.
yes your tires will chirp and yes you will inevitably break your shafts or your gear set.
try selling a few of the diffs you have and buying a real locking device?

o.k. then this is the route i will take. it makes more sense to sell of some used parts. and gather up the quid for the right tool for the job. just a thought that i am sure has crossed a few of those wandering type minds before. thanks for the info.

I welded the diffs in my Suzuki Samurai. However the truck also weighs about 2000 lbs. Quite a bit different from a Disco. Also I have plenty of extra parts in case I break things and it's not a daily driver. I would never consider doing something like this to a Disco. The Sammy has manual locking hubs in the front so that makes things a lot easier. Let me tell you though, I don't have a power steering setup on it now and with the hubs locked, it does not want to turn. Like I said it's not a daily driver and it is awesome offroad.

HaHa Steve,
I had an old off road one man odysee like that, with the solid rear axel. The thing flew over the dunes in a str8 line, but never try to turn at high speeds, cause those big ole nobbies just kept pushing you in a straight direction. Finally my cousin crashed it into a tree doing about 35. She was Okay, but there was enough damage, I traded it rather than attepmed to rebuild it.

My disco is fun but the Sammy is my real project. I plan on cutting off the back of the car and welding up a rear cage as well as a full interior cage. I will do a coil conversion in the front and a quarter eliptical in the rear. I may upgrade the axles, but for now they are fine for the 32x10.50's. It should look something like this...
