Hello All, Well, I just returned from my 45,000 mile scheduled maintenance. As I expected, the brake pads need to be replaced. Here's the strange thing, the front have 50% life left and the rear only have 25%. The Land Rover dealer wanted to replace the rear pads for $250. I gave him a strange look and told him I would do it myself under my father's advisement. I asked him about the condition of the rotors and he said they were fine and can not be machined, anyway. My dad recommends that we replace front and rear pads and machine the outer small lip on the rotors. So, here are my questions: 1) Should I replace both front and back when the front still have 50% life left? 2) Can Land Rover rotors be machined to reduce the outer lip or do they need to be replaced? 3) Has anyone ever installed Mintex Pads ($120/front & rear, http://www.discountbritishparts.com/Disco_II/disco_ii.html) from Discount Rovers and how good are they? 4) Should I stick with LR genuine Brake Parts ($255/front & rear, https://www.expeditionexchange.com/genuine/)? My thoughts, replace rear pads with LR genuine parts and machine the rotors. On the next change, replace front and rear with LR genuine pads and change all rotors. I do value the opinions of this discussion group and thanks for your time. Gerry |

I dont think the LR genuine pads are that good. There are many better alternatives. For rotors, i think i will be going with EBC port grooved http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brakes.jsp?autoMake=Land+Rover&autoModel=Discover y+Series+II&autoYear=2000&autoModClar=&make=EBC&model=Sport+Grooved+Rotors |

I recently installed the Atlantic British kit in my 2001. http://www.atlanticbritish.com/ProductList.asp?Category=BRAKES&Vehicle=D2&PerPag e=1&ListType=DETAIL&PartNumber=9542HP The rotors have no name on them at all. No really, not a lick of writing on the things. But the performance is great. No dust at all from the Kevlar pads and stop-on-a-dime performance from the overall kit. I'm pretty happy with my purchase. |
